In-Person Law Summer School

By Debate Chamber

An understanding of the law can get you a long way, whether it’s knowing your rights at a protest march or negotiating a corporate merger. From police interviews to boardroom conferences, it is very often the lawyers who call the shots. The study and practice of law requires a sharp mind, exceptional attention to detail and occasionally a flare for the dramatic. It can certainly be challenging and complex, but it is also a lot of fun to master.  The Law Summer School will sharpen your problem solving skills, hone your ability to identify weaknesses in an argument or body of evidence and give you the confidence to advocate for your position (in court or anywhere else). Both in-person Law events emphasise experiential learning – from simulated client conferences, to business negotiations, to mock trials, you will have the opportunity to practice and develop your abilities in a supportive environment where excellence is recognised and celebrated. If you’ve ever dreamed of making a brilliant closing speech to the jury, this is your chance! Suitable for students aged 15 - 18. Please note that this course is non-residential. 20th July: FREE YOGA AND MEDITATION in the park for international women

5.0(42)

By Art and Spirituality CIC

In the whirlwind of daily life, we often miss the present. But what if we paused? By cultivating awareness of our thoughts, feelings, and the world around us, we unlock a path to greater well-being. This practice, known as mindfulness, allows us to savour life's experiences and gain a deeper understanding of ourselves. Have you ever noticed yourself multitasking on autopilot? Working from home with the TV on, scrolling through your phone while eating, or rushing through your day without truly being present? In today's digital age, it's easy to become scattered and disconnected. This will be your path to reconnect with yourself. Through gentle yoga practices and mindfulness techniques, you'll learn to cultivate present-moment awareness and a sense of calm amidst the everyday chaos. Imagine truly savouring your meals, quieting your mind during work, increased productivity and finding peace in the simple moments.  This class will happen in Saughton Park and in case of rain at the Art and Spirituality Centre- Meeting at 1.45pm at our centre to grab a mat and leave towards the park (or stay inside in case of rain) This class is sponsored by Evoc- Community Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund. It is FREE and is aimed at  WOMEN only from ETHNIC MINORITY BACKGROUNDS living in Edinburgh .  (Irish, any other white background, mixed ethnic, Asian/Asian British, Black/African/Caribbean, Black British, Arabic or other ethic groups) We prioritize the area of Gorgie-Dalry-Saughton where our studio is based.  OUR TEACHER Niroshini from "Roots" has been practising yoga since the age of 6. With a background rooted in yoga and naturopathy studies in India, she is passionate about sharing the transformative power of yoga and mindfulness. Drawing from the wisdom of Hatha and Ashtanga Yoga traditions, we have a tapestry of mindful movement, breathwork, postures, (asanas), meditation, and relaxation techniques. This holistic approach cultivates peace, strength, and awareness on both on and off the mat. At Roots, we believe yoga is a transformative tool for a happier, healthier you. Discover your roots and embark on this journey of mindful well-being.  That's where "Roots" comes in. The name has a reason just like our life. Our roots, both physical and metaphorical, connect us to the earth's energy. Yoga mimic these roots, anchoring us in the present moment. Mindfulness becomes the fertile ground where inner wisdom and true self can flourish.  By attending this class you release the teacher, Giada Gaslini and Art and Spirituality Cic, from any liability arising out of any personal injuries, emotional or physical release, death, expectations of results, theft in the venue or damages that may happen to people and objects while attending.

25th July Megan Carroll #Agent121. Looking for: MG, YA, ADULT FICTION, NON-FICTION

5.0(1)

By I Am In Print

LOOKING FOR: MG, YA, ADULT FICTION, ADULT NON-FICTION, NON-FICTION FOR 7+ Megan Carroll is looking for writers in a variety of areas, and from a wide range of backgrounds – she is particularly keen to hear from Black, Asian, and LGBTQIA+ writers. Her main areas of focus this year are adult fiction and non-fiction, as well as non-fiction for 7+, and MG and YA fiction. In Fiction, Megan is keen to see high-concept love stories (think The Flat Share or The Lock In) for both commercial and reading group readers. She’d love to see those familiar romance tropes – enemies to lovers, friends to lovers, love triangles, forbidden love etc. – with underrepresented characters at the centre. She is also looking for historical fiction and gothic horror (think Laura Purcell, Stacey Halls and Silvia Moreno-Garcia) – anything that has a creepy, uneasy undertone is likely for Megan’s list. Megan is also actively looking for upmarket fiction and would love to see layered family drama, contemporary stories about life today and darkly comic novels that explore a specific time, place or experience. In Non-Fiction, Megan is keen to hear from experts in their field talking about topics relating to film, music, true crime, popular culture, history and issues from largely unrepresented perspectives. She is keen to see memoir, narrative non-fiction and essay collections. In Children’s and YA, she is keen to see contemporary YA with humour, and romance at the heart – fun and emotional stories that appeal to the interests and issues of the teenage readers. She’d also love to see thrillers and horror stories for this age group too. It’s unlikely that high fantasy novels for YA readers will be right for her, but she is keen to see stories with fantasy elements in a real world setting. On the younger end, Megan is looking for funny, contemporary middle grade – think Louise Rennison and Karen McCombie – and anything creepy and spooky for 8-12 year old readers too. She’d love to find something like Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events and is keen to find original adventure stories in both fantasy and realistic settings. Megan would like you to submit a covering letter, 1 page synopsis and the first three chapters or 5,000 words of your manuscript in a single word document. (In addition to the paid sessions, Megan is kindly offering one free session for low income/under-represented writers. Please email agent121@iaminprint.co.uk [agent121@iaminprint.co.uk] to apply, outlining your case for this option which is offered at the discretion of I Am In Print).  By booking you understand you need to conduct an internet connection test with I Am In Print prior to the event. You also agree to email your material in one document to reach I Am In Print by the stated submission deadline and note that I Am In Print take no responsibility for the advice received during your agent meeting. The submission deadline is: Friday 19 July 2024
