Humans are by nature complex insular and self-protective. Conversely, they are also extremely curious and impulsive. In our fast-paced technology led world the art of the conversation is rapidly being side-lined in favour of the safety and anonymity of email and text. But what when we find ourselves in the situation of having a difficult conversation with a real human face to face? A recent study by Globis, the Japanese Graduate School of Management, revealed that 53% of respondents to their “Difficult conversations” survey consciously avoided any conversation where there was a chance of conflict. The reasons provided were lack of appropriate training and lack of experience. The need to reverse this trend through education is both timely and relevant.
