Life is busy. So much to do and achieve. Days turn into weeks, time is always slipping away as we try to fit everything into an already overfilled schedule. We lack the space to befriend ourselves. To listen to what our body and heart really desires for us. This can leave us feeling tired, with headaches, anxious, unable to sleep, full of aches and pains, a sense of being unwell but unable to pinpoint what or why. My experience of this, left my body exhausted and my mind in a state of confusion. Eventually my body refused to play the game of life at the pace I demanded. I knew deep down something had to change. I returned to my practice of yoga, I studied the breath, its connection to our emotions and thoughts. I learnt how the body holds the secrets to our own happiness. I studied yoga nidra, different meditation and awareness practices, relaxation techniques and the power of visualisation. I watched how as we layer these practices into one long experience it has the power to shift entire groups of people from a sense of dis-ease into complete ease. This makes my heart sing, to take just an hour with a group of people and create a space to enable them to reconnect to their most authentic selves. Children are facing even more pressures than ever; exams, social media, cyberbullying and body image and need to develop skills to cope and succeed in today's world. We offer a safe and secure consistent place for vulnerable young people to find support. . OUR FUTURE LEADERS Who we work with One Step at a Time. We start working with our young people from an early age to ensure that we can follow through when building their confidence and self-esteem; especially when faced with challenges such as peer pressure, body image, mental health, and addiction. Our youth team helps to make all our courses a success. We use the skills of our Black community ambassadors, be-frienders, and arts awarded courses as a mean of engagement. With our youth, we use a unique approach to person-centred success. We encourage an holistic approach, making them aware of Black history, Black leaders and connections with the Black elders within our community. At SlamFresh, we believe poetry can make a big difference to young people’s lives. But the need to create a nurturing and supportive environment in which to write has never been greater. Although the popularity of the art form, particularly spoken word, continues to grow on an unprecedented scale, last year, for the first time in our country’s history, poetry was nearly made an optional GCSE subject. As well as this, the recent closure of schools has meant that young people from lower economic backgrounds have been put at an even greater disadvantage than they already were. Cut off from schools, many of these young people simply have not had the space or resources to access creative opportunities, at a time when they need them more than ever. SlamFresh is a CIC based in the Newcastle upon Tyne which aims to address these problems. We run workshops that focus on the contemporary styles of spoken word and slam poetry, styles of writing which we have found can engage some of the most reluctant students. SlamFresh work in partnership with schools and community centres to mentor young people in writing, editing and performance. We have 3 company directors, Rowan McCabe, Michael MacDonald and Jeff Price. Rowan McCabe and Michael MacDonald (stage name Donald Jenkins) also serve as the two primary facilitators for the workshops, although guests may be brought in on a freelance basis where required. The directors met through their work as professional poets. Collectively, they have spent over 40 years working with children and young people.
