Abstract Sculpture

During this class we will explore the creation of abstract sculpture starting with the development of ideas, shapes and forms, then we will use some composite sculpture material to transfer your ideas from a sketch to a 3 dimensional work. The material we use is rigid but very easily worked with rasps and reduction paper so you'll quite quickly gain confidence in working with it. We will supply a dust mast if requred You don't need any prior experience in sculpture or a background in art to enjoy this course, I'll take you through all aspects of the creative process. At the end of the day you'll have a piece of work to take away but we will also have discussed how to take your original to the next stage which will be moulding and casting to re-produce it in a hard wearing material.

Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop is open to anyone interested in learning about or making sculpture. Our purpose-built spaces provide a unique environment and we regularly host organisations and community groups who want to make use of our facilities for their own programmes. Beatrice Hoffman has worked as a sculptor since her sculpture degree 1986-89 at the Norwich School of Art, mainly modelling in clay and plasticine, but also carving in stone, wood, plaster, polystyrene and expandable foam. Originally from Germany, she has settled in a small village near Oxford, where she sculpts in her conservatory studio , and under a gazebo in the summer. As you can see from her website gallery, the sizes of her sculptures vary from domestic small figures for windowsills, chimney breasts and coffee tables to middle sized (60-90 cm tall) garden und indoor sculptures on plinths or furniture, and freestanding life-size large public and private commissions 200 cm high, suitable for gardens, large interior reception halls and offices. A few of her sculptures can be found in the gallery “The Art Agency” in Esher near London. To buy a sculpture, you can also approach her directly via phone, video/zoom or email; or alternatively arrange a studio visit. Once a year in May she opens her studio with “Oxford Arts Weeks” (OAW) . You can find the retail prices of sculptures beside the individual sculpture images on this website; this price does not include anything else but the sculpture. Costs for courier and crates ( for larger sculpture only) and tax (VAT and Local destination Tax duty) are NOT included in the price. Please contact your Customs authority to enquire about the costs of tax; Beatrice will let you know about the courier costs. She sends sculptures world-wide via courier. The prices on the website are for bronze-resin casts; bronze casts can be commissioned , with a 50% downpayment and on average, a six weeks lead-time. If necessary and possible, she can advise on siting a newly-bought sculpture and the choice of plinths.

Our courses designed for beginners and all levels of skill run annually, and are now in their thirty-seventh year. Courses are held in the open-air, stone carving & sculpture workshop in the heart of Tout Quarry Sculpture Park & Nature Reserve and in the well equipped spacious Drill Hall Stone / Work / Space. Our Tutors are highly experienced in selecting freshly quarried stone for individual ideas, 3D sculpture, architectural forms, relief carving, letter cutting, stone masonry; and give one-to-one tuition in the development and completion of individual work. Working with freestone that can be carved in any direction informed by the pure quality of light throughout the day, reveals forms and surfaces that haven’t been exposed for 150 million years, creating a more powerful and visually informed work. Portland stone, the finest of carving stones, was once an ancient sea, formed from pure sunlight interacting with calcium carbonates in sea water. Covid 19 and social distancing Courses take place in socially distanced workshops, with reduced numbers and allocated tool sets. We have hand sanitiser, face coverings and cotton gloves, but encourage people to bring their own. Protective glasses are available for purchase. Hello and welcome. My name is Jacqueline Rolls and I am an artist/sculptor who creates using willow and other natural materials. Being a self-taught artist with experience gained over many years. I create work using a variety of different techniques, many of which I have discovered myself. My creations are created with materials that I have either grown myself, purchased from other growers, gathered or salvaged myself. There is something quite special about working with a material that was once a living thing, the desire to connect and work with the materials that I use often feels as if I am breathing new life into my creations. Working in this way is akin to drawing and painting in many ways, layering, shaping, constraining and feeling free to express me to make mistakes and new discoveries. I sometimes incorporate other materials into my work including metal when it is needed e.g for bird legs or to give it strength for a public artwork that needs to be secured or needs additional strength. I also love sharing my passion for creating with others and so as well as creating work to sell I also provide my own range of workshops which are available via my workshop page I also work with many different organisations providing activities for public art /community engagement projects as well as providing private and bespoke activities for more details look at the relevant pages in the menu above.
