From propaganda to advertising, posters are a ubiquitous, powerful vehicle to take a message to the masses. Over four weeks, learn how to approach poster design in a creative and practical way. Although some computer work will be introduced, it will only be used as another production tool, participants will be encouraged to experiment with analogue techniques such as collage and hand-generated type. You will learn about the history of poster design; learn to use aspects of Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop; develop approaches to letterform and layout. The emphasis of this course is on the development of a set of posters from research and design through to output.Week 1: History History of Poster Design: Looking at significant and famous posters from around the globe and their impact on society. Practical activity: After a quick introduction to InDesign we will recreate one of these posters, studying the component parts and their relationships to one another. Homework: Think of a concept for your design. What is it for? Who is your target audience? Where and how will it be displayed? Select a favourite poster to bring in or discuss with the group in week 2.Week 2: Image We will begin by discussing participant posters they have brought in to share and look at positives and potential negatives within the designs. Image selection can be a key factor to the success of your poster campaign. We will think about the choices between photography and illustration looking at examples of how this is done successfully. Think about the different ways we can generate and use images. Practical activity: Consider what medium the image might be and how it can be created. Learn about flatbed/film scanner for potential use in image creation.Week 3: Fonts We will look at how typography impacts designs and the messages that it can convey by itself. Consider various approaches to how we can generate type. How typographic selections work alongside selected images. Practical activity: Work through a few typographic workshops thinking about how typographic choices will alter the message you are trying to convey. We will consider various ways and techniques of creating type for our poster. Homework: Developing your typographic solution further, if required. Work through variations of layout.Week 4: Output Continue working on our posters making final tweaks and selecting the poster that is our most successful design for output. We will look at the various formats for output and how we prepare our posters for print. Look at usage of different poster sizes &ndash; why use one over the other?? This short course will help you take your images from the screen to final professional-quality prints. We will walk through the processes and techniques needed to take the mystery out of this often daunting and overlooked part of the creative process.By the end of the day you will have gained the skills and confidence to take digital files through preparation in Photoshop, optimisation, and onto physical test printing, adjustments and final output on Stills&rsquo; large format Epson inkjet printer. We&rsquo;ll cover areas critical to the desired outcome including screen and print calibration, paper choice and ICC profile use. By the end of the day you will have two A3 prints on premium Hahnemule matt or gloss papers.Participants should have a basic understanding of Photoshop and attend with a selection of their own RAW files or high resolution TIFFs to work with through the practical exercises.Morning We will begin with evaluating our images and processing the file to maximise print quality output. We will then use Adobe Bridge, Adobe Camera Raw &amp; Adobe Photoshop for the optimisation process. Participants will be guided in preparing their images ready for test printing, before evaluating and adjusting. Discussion will cover using ICC profiles, screen and print calibration, colour rendering, canvas sizing, and sharpening for final print output on various media.Afternoon We will then put the skills we have learned into practice, producing and evaluating test prints before undertaking our final A3 digital inkjet prints. Each participant will finish the session with two finished prints. There will be plenty of opportunity for participants to ask questions at every stage, so that you feel confident and can make informed decisions throughout the whole process.This course is designed for those who are already familiar with some digital photography processes but who want to pursue a particular aspect and develop skills in a specific genre. Jenny owns and manages The Scottish Soapworks. She offers a range of hands-on soap and skincare making business courses which usually last from one to three days.
The length of course you need will depend on how many products you want to make, and the level of support you need with developing and marketing&nbsp;your&nbsp;brand.
On the one-day course you will cover up to two soap or skincare making methods in detail including: ingredients; suppliers; equipment; safety issues; recipes and essential oils. On the two and three-day courses you can cover more products including: traditional&nbsp;cold process soap; organic glycerine &#39;melt and pour&#39; soap; shampoo bars; liquid soap; and, other skincare products such as hand and body cream, or lip balms.
You will go away with a bespoke pack of information including details of suppliers, legislation on creating recipes, and practical hints and tips.&nbsp;Jenny&#39;s business courses are&nbsp;arranged at a time to suit.

Make a mosaic mirror with Mossy Mosaic

On this bespoke 5 day course, silversmith Bryony Knox will show you how to design and make your own Arts &amp; Crafts inspired copper clock.
This is an ideal introduction to various metalwork techniques whilst making your own beautiful object to love and treasure.
This course will run over 5 days from 10-4pm each day. Beginners - Advanced
Bryony will explain the way to design and make a free standing clock using techniques popular amongst Arts &amp; Crafts such as riveting, piercing and the ancient art of Chasing &amp; Repousse- where sheet metal is formed and embossed using small steel tools, whilst held in pine pitch.
During the week, a slightly smaller version of the Acorn Clock, which Bryony made on BBC2's 'The Victorian House of Arts and Crafts' will be made.
Templates will be provided with room to personalise your design. The price includes copper, use of tools tools and a quartz clock mechanism.
The class will be no larger than 4 people and held in Bryony's own colourful and eclectic workshop at Coburg House Studios in Leith, Edinburgh.
&nbsp;Due to Covid19 restrictions Bryony cannot provide tea, coffee but she will point you in the direction of some great local Leith Deli's and coffee shops where you can pick up lunch or feel free to bring your own.
In accordance with Covid19 Safety measures students are provided with disposable masks and/ or visors to wear. The class size is now 4 students rather than 8, with work spaces socially distanced by 2 meters. All tools are sanitised before use.

On this fun, workshop with local artist Lucy Wayman, you will learn how to make a macram&eacute; plant hanger which can also double as fabulous hanging storage with the addition of a fruit bowl or jewellery pot!
With hands-on help from Lucy, you will learn the basic principles and techniques of macram&eacute;, and will build your confidence making small keyring designs. Using 100% cotton rope and a selection of coloured twines, you will then create your hand-crafted hanger.&nbsp;
You can also bring along items you&#39;d like to incorporate into your design, such as beads, jewellery and found objects such as twigs to make it truly personal.Lucy will provide you with a&nbsp;helpful instruction manual to guide you through your project, which you can take home to remind you of the knots you learned.&nbsp;

Discover the magic of mosaic making&nbsp;with Jacky Cox of Mossy MosaicMosaicing fits in perfectly with our vision of a world where recycling, repurposing and upcycling is the norm. Jacky works with a variety of materials including glass, recycled crockery and natural materials like slate and sea glass, and finds the whole creative process from sourcing to creating absorbing, relaxing and mesmerising.&nbsp;On this 3 hour session, Jacky will help you create two mosaic items using methods you can do at home. You will begin by designing creating a grouted drinks coaster, and while this is drying, you will design a beautiful hanging heart using vitreous (&#39;swimming pool&#39;) tiles. Learn how to quickly capture the world around you in ink and watercolour.Known locally as the Edinburgh Sketcher, ink and watercolour artist Mark Kirkham is well-known on social media for the sketches he creates on the streets of Edinburgh, and beyond.On this private, 3 hour sketching tour, Mark guides you around nearby sketching spots, picking out details in architecture and nature that will help describe the techniques he has picked up over a decade of sketching in and around Edinburgh.&nbsp;Each tour will touch on details, perspectives, depth and composition, as you go from 5 minute exercises to relax the hand and work on composition, to 30 minute detailed vistas as you walk around nearby beautiful and historic locations.You can join Mark at The Arienas Collective, or request Mark meets you at a location of your choice. Learn how to quickly capture the world around you in ink and watercolour.
Known locally as the Edinburgh Sketcher, ink and watercolour artist Mark Kirkham is well-known on social media for the sketches he creates on the streets of Edinburgh, and beyond.
On this private, 3 hour sketching tour, Mark guides you around nearby sketching spots, picking out details in architecture and nature that will help describe the techniques he has picked up over a decade of sketching in and around Edinburgh. 
Each tour will touch on details, perspectives, depth and composition, as you go from 5 minute exercises to relax the hand and work on composition, to 30 minute detailed vistas as you walk around nearby beautiful and historic locations.
You can join Mark at The Arienas Collective, or request Mark meets you at a location of your choice. Indoor options are also available, which are good for evening classes, or at times of year when the weather might be too wild to be outdoors! Just let us know when you submit your request.
