This 6 week course will support you to make the most of the range of
applications Adobe Premiere Pro offers in the production of video. Sample
footage will be provided for you throughout the course, but you can also bring

This week we will focus in on what makes up video from a technical standpoint.
We will then look at how we can work with and alter these parameters for
different uses in our films through:

 * Transcoding – converting the footage into an editable file and understanding
   codecs and meta data
 * Adjusting scale and positioning and using motion keyframes to create movement
   over time
 * Adding titles and animating them
 * Applying transitions and various stock video effects
 * Layering tracks and using opacity and different layer blending effects
 * Creating masks and using motion tracking
 * Working with green-screen footage, creating mattes, mask filters and working
   with multiple layers

Week 4- Audio & sound

This week we’ll consider the importance of sound design and music for narrative
and atmosphere in film and experimental video through:

 * Learning how to enhance your film with sound and music
 * Introducing audio and music to the timeline, cutting and leveling
 * Laying down music and cutting the footage to fit
 * Building sound design around an existing edit with sync-sound and SFX
 * Common practice and different approaches for syncing external microphone
   audio and video
 * Mastering the audio and making sure that it is all levelled
 * Learning how to create subtitles for our films and different methods to
   export/embed them

Week 5- Colour

This week we’ll start looking at colour in our videos and what role that plays.
We will look at the process of colour grading and changing the mood in our films
through:

 * Using Lumetri Colour, the colour-correcting function within Premiere Pro CC
 * Matching the colour of different cameras to create a similar look
 * Creating different “colour grades” to create different atmospheres
 * Stylising our footage
 * Understand the colour limitations of video files and the importance of
   exposure when filming
 * Working with tracked masks to isolate certain areas within your image to
   colour correct

Week 6- Putting it all together

In our final week we will get the opportunity to experiment with all the skills
we’ve learned to create an opening sequence for a tv series. This is also a
great opportunity to revisit any topics from previous weeks.

Eco Darkroom

This 5 week in-house class is an introduction to plant-based photographic

Project Day: Scanning and Editing

Project Day: Studio Portrait Photography

The course will introduce you to some of the most enduring photographic
portraits and provide discussion on why they remain so seminal. The course
includes an introduction to lighting and composition techniques for portraiture,

You will use studio flash lighting to explore basic techniques in formal and

Darkroom Photography: Introduction to Colour Photography

This short 1-day course will introduce you to the large format 5×4″ view camera

*Due to space limitations in the darkrooms, the full course is only open to a
maximum of 6 participants.  However, there are a number of additional 1-day
places (for Saturday 21st only) that can be booked when these physical
restrictions are not relevant. 

Outline Day 1:

Morning:
John will start the workshop with a comprehensive overview of his major bodies
of work and his journey in producing many exhibition projects of his landscape
work – examining the research methodologies and planning decisions that go into
each project. He will show examples of exhibition prints and books and explain
his interest and approach in photographing various landscapes. He will also show
some digital prints including infrared pictures made with a digital camera.

Afternoon:
A short field-trip nearby the gallery will give participants the chance to learn
about Davies’ choice of equipment and experience first-hand his personal
approach to camera exposure techniques and film selection. The group will then
return to the gallery to process the exposed film and learn how development of
negatives can achieve best results for printing or scanning. Detailed workshop

Outline Day 2:

Morning:
Practical demonstration of B&W darkroom printing, providing insight into John’s
decision-making processes, paper and chemistry choices and darkroom techniques.
John will advise on how to achieve high quality photographic prints to archival
standards.

Afternoon:
This final session will explore aspects of landscape photography (but not
exclusively) and will involve interactive discussions about perceptions of
meaning and communicating ideas through images. This session is an oppertunity
for participants to bring along a selection of prints to be discussed as a
group, and receive constructive feedback from John. There will also be time for
additional questions

John Davies Biography

Born in Sedgefield, County Durham, in 1949, John Davies studied photography at
Trent Polytechnic in Nottingham. In the 1970s his first photographs were
landscape studies of rural Britain and in 1981 he began an ongoing documentation
of urban Britain, concentrating on the industrial transformation and on
post-industrial landscape.

He has published several photobooks, including The British Landscape in 2006.
This series was launched at PhotoEspaña in Madrid and other exhibition venues
include Gallery Vu, Paris, and The New Art Gallery, Walsall. His photographs
have been widely exhibited, including at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the
Pompidou Centre, Paris, the Royal Academy of Art and the Victoria and Albert
Museum, London. In 2008, Davies was shortlisted for the Deutsche Börse
Photography Prize for his major retrospective exhibition of photographs taken
from The British Landscape.

Davies continues to photograph, publish, and exhibit internationally, most
recently publishing Retraced 81/19,featuring before-and-after photographs made
at the same locations in England, Wales, France and Germany between 1981 and
2019.

Current exhibitions include Energy: Sparks from the Collection at the V&A,
London, and Landscape Trauma at the Centre for British Photography, London,
featuring his newest body of work of Contrail Cirrus clouds from jet engines
above the north sky.

From propaganda to advertising, posters are a ubiquitous, powerful vehicle to take a message to the masses. Over four weeks, learn how to approach poster design in a creative and practical way. Although some computer work will be introduced, it will only be used as another production tool, participants will be encouraged to experiment with analogue techniques such as collage and hand-generated type. You will learn about the history of poster design; learn to use aspects of Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop; develop approaches to letterform and layout. The emphasis of this course is on the development of a set of posters from research and design through to output.Week 1: History History of Poster Design: Looking at significant and famous posters from around the globe and their impact on society. Practical activity: After a quick introduction to InDesign we will recreate one of these posters, studying the component parts and their relationships to one another. Homework: Think of a concept for your design. What is it for? Who is your target audience? Where and how will it be displayed? Poster Design

Poster Design & Print Graphics

snaps and throwaway selfies – is more and more becoming recognised as a
legitimate photographic medium. And anyone with a phone or tablet can do it!

This course will explore the concepts of digital camera photography (and all

mixture of discussion and practical work this course will help you to push the
