Our school supports students in developing creative confidence and finding courage through a range of icon painting courses and workshops open to students at all levels. Edinburgh School of Icon Painting was founded in September 2013. It is a small school based in the artist hub St. Margaret's House. The school mission is to teach icon painting (writing) to people of all different backgrounds but at the same time maintaining the ethos and essence of it's spirituality. Introducing this unique form of art to students of the school I introduce a way of practising art which is different the other forms of art and it is said to be more then just art. Students learn egg tempera technique which has been used in art for centuries and it is one of the most lasting painting techniques. There are still reasonably well preserved icons from VI Century. Egg tempera involves preparing own paints using egg yolk and dry pigments. Through the whole process of work we try to limit synthetic materials. Using organic materials helps to develop a connection with nature and in consequence with the Divine. Basia Mindewicz - founder and teacher. Born in 1978. Graduated from The Maria Grzegorzewska Academy of Special Education, MA and College of Iconography (Policealne Studium Ikonograficzne) in Bielsk Podlaski in 2008. Kaisa is a self-taught mixed media artist based in Edinburgh. She will will be there to guide you on the evening and demonstrate how to use different tools and techniques. You can then use these skills and tools to create your own unique piece of artwork.  The tools include the usual brushes, as well as fun items such as pallette knives, monoprinting techniques, wax pastels… And other things you’ve probably never tried before in painting, such as wall paper scrapers, cooking spatulas and squeeges. A fun night in good company guaranteed.

Graduate in Fine Arts from the University of Granada. I began my career in 1999 as a Technical Drawing teacher in ARTEGRANADA School and as an Art Restorer to Granada Curia. I have been teaching Art from 2001 to Secondary students in several private and concertada schools (schools sponsored by a public voucher system). I am currently working painting in my studio and teaching lessons in drawing and painting to children and adults.

damian callan

Damian Callan is a practising figurative painter based in Edinburgh. He teaches drawing and painting classes for adults and art classes for children at his studio near Haymarket. In the spring and summer he runs landscape painting courses in and around Edinburgh. He is the author of two books, Paint Like Degas and Paint Like Renoir. His work is exhibited widely in the UK and is held in collections across the world. He has written articles for Artist & Illustrators Magazine and The Artist Magazine and regularly demonstrates drawing and painting techniques at public events in Edinburgh.

Life drawing and painting classes at the Life Room were designed by Paul with the intent to teach from a personal position as opposed to a generic one. He demonstrates how he draws and paints, believing in working to his strengths. Those participating in his classes are encouraged to develop their own style, drawing inspiration from the skills gained during the tutored sessions.
