Four Square is an Edinburgh charity supporting people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Employing over 80 staff at 7 locations across the city we provide support; advice; accommodation; and learning and training opportunities. We also run one of Scotland’s largest social enterprises, Edinburgh Furniture Initiative, where we re-sell donated furniture to support our charity. Our store is Revolve certified for safety and quality.

Would you like to bring a cherished piece of furniture back to life, working to professional standards? Or learn skills for a new business venture? Our workshops are for beginners looking for a one day taster course or those committed to a larger project. All skills levels welcome to our small classes at a variety of venues close to Edinburgh. This “mix and match” way of running a workshop provides a chance to see the wide variety of chairs that are brought along for rejuvenation. We really believe that you can learn from each other and not just from the tutors. You will learn traditional skills working to professional standards.

Victoria teaches traditional and modern upholstery skills, restoration and upcycling on your own furniture. The Spey St teaching studio offers six dedicated workbenches with a full set of upholstery tools, airline with staple gun and an area to store your project. Learn how to strip down, repair/refinish frame and woodwork, re-web, replace seat pad traditionally with coir and horsehair or modern foams, apply fabric and finish off with braid, piping or studs. There are four 8 week courses per year and monthly weekend drop in sessions available to book on the website. Victoria is a member of the Association of Master Upholsterers and the Fine Furniture Guild.

Porcupine Upholstery offers a specialist upholstery service, working with both traditional and modern materials. Furniture made pre 1950 was made to last, with wooden frames using traditional jointing methods of dowel and glue and covered in the sturdiest of fabrics. Padding was horsehair. Working with any piece made to these methods, proprietor Paula Graham can usually repair, clean and re-use the original materials or recreate the original effect. Every refurbished piece will meet all current Fire and Safety Regulations, and all fabrics used will have the best possible durability, as measured by the Martindale Rub Test. This internationally recognised test uses discs to rub sandpaper or wool across a fabric, to assess its ability to withstand wear and tear in either domestic or commercial contexts. You are assured of a quality finish that will provide pleasure and utility for decades to come.
