Safeguarding (F2F) The Makaton Safeguarding workshop is designed to support professionals and carers of children and adults with severe communication and learning disabilities. The workshop builds on existing knowledge of signs and symbols from Level 1 and 2 training, and provides instruction for extra signs and symbols specific to safeguarding situations. Participants are invited to consider differing protocols and practice. The workshop will enable participants to consider how the vocabulary may be safely applied to promote communication for people who use Makaton within a range of levels and contexts. Content This unique workshop provides signs and symbols for a range of vocabulary covering a number of topics: 1. People: family, relationships and people around us 2. Body parts and clothes 3. Places 4. Feelings: feelings, thoughts and behaviours (including bullying and abuse) 5. Sexual behaviour By the end of the workshop you will be able to: 1. Develop a ‘Safeguarding through Makaton’ plan for implementation in your own setting. 2. Demonstrate an understanding of the range of people Makaton users could come into contact with at different ages and stages in their lives; 3. Demonstrate how Makaton can be personalised and used at different levels of complexity to meet individual needs; 4. Identify vocabulary required by a Makaton user and be able to apply the principles of this analysis to the user’s own setting; 5. Demonstrate an understanding of the difference between comments and questions, and an appreciation of how to maintain an interaction with a Makaton user; 6. ABOUT THIS TRAINING COURSE This 5 full-day course is aimed at engineers and supervisors who already have a basic understanding of well construction methods but who would benefit from a more detailed knowledge of completion design. The course will concentrate on the important aspects of completion design and what makes a safe and efficient well. A common thread of practical examples will be used throughout the course in the form of a case study or 'red-thread' exercise. The case study is based around data all taken from a single field where those attending will work through all the basic issues of a completion design. The exercises associated with the case study is performed in the student's own time after each of the formal sessions. However, at the start of the next day, the case study is reviewed and discussed. The whole case study will continue through all sessions, with each element being reviewed at the start of the next session. There is no 'right' answer to the exercise - producing interesting discussions! The purpose of the course is not to go over specific equipment in detail. Teaching methods include presentations, videos, and animations and the case study.
