Your tutor will discuss your different aims and goals, whether that&rsquo;s really focusing upon learning and practicing a certain skill, or if it is to finish a specific project.Any new starters will be given a tour of the workshop and you will be introduced to some basic techniques during the first session, so you feel comfortable within the workshop. You can then discuss your ideas for the term and your tutor will help you with how and where to order materials from for your project, we have a substantial list of good suppliers and discount codes to get you started. Soon enough you will have a good understanding of the essential jewellery making skills which you can then go on to develop further, there are many areas of jewellery making to explore.Throughout your time with us, your tutor and peers will help you develop the skills and knowledge required to bring your designs to life.Each student will be working on their own projects, everybody has different directions and design ideas and techniques they want to work on. Learn how to take a log of green wood, trim it with an axe, draw it to shape using a shave horse and a draw knife and then use the pole lathe to turn your piece into an item of your choice.This green woodturning workshop is held in a dedicated covered, outside space in the peaceful setting of our workshop in the cottage gardens of our home on the Cambs/Norfolk border.&nbsp;Our classes are one to one (see "Pole Lathe Turning for 1 person") or for pairs so you enjoy an immersive experience with the full attention of the tutor. There will be no other students in the workshop.The origins of the pole lathe are lost in antiquity, but it is known that Vikings used them as they have been discovered in archaeological finds in York. The ancient craft of pole lathe turning petered out in England after the Second World War.You&#39;ll learn how to make a number of items that you&#39;ll be able to take away with you at the end of the day. If you&#39;ve always wanted to make handmade pottery but have no idea where to begin, this beginner-friendly wheel throwing class could be just the thing for you! You&#39;ll gain all of the skills and experience needed to create pottery on the wheel.During this taster, your host Amanda will demonstrate a simple step-by-step guide on how to approach the pottery wheel and support you in creating your first ever ceramic pot.Don&#39;t worry if this is your first experience with wheel throwing, as you&#39;ll receive plenty of guidance and class sizes are kept to a maximum of 5 students.Your beautiful handmade clay pot will be yours to keep and take home.&nbsp;To keep things affordable &amp; flexible for everyone, you have two options:1. Craft - Take your pots home right there and then. Once dry, you&#39;ll be able to paint your pot in your own time and keep them forever on display. They can not be used for food or drink but you can use them to decorate your home. The painting process will all be explained at the end of your workshop. &pound;35pp2. Art&nbsp;- Return up to 3-months later to paint your pots with us in a 1.5 hour painting workshop. A talk with NIKKI PARMENTER - Textiles/Mixed Media Artist
TUESDAY 15TH OCTOBER
START TIME: 7.00pm 
Join our TEA ’N CHAT with Textile Artist Nikki Parmenter, who will talk about her work, explaining some of the techniques she uses.
She will also demonstrate the plastic entrapment method she will be using for her workshop on Wednesday 6th November and show some finished examples. This will entail some layering of fabric, soldering and free machine embroidery and some ideas regarding ways of displaying the finished piece. 

Nikki taught art for 30 years to secondary school children, and having left full time work in 2016 , has been providing talks, demonstrations, summer schools, workshops to schools, groups and societies. She is a member of various art and textile groups.
She exhibits her work widely and has written a number of articles for both magazines and online sites. She is based in Cheshire and specialises in mixed media textile pieces, taking inspiration from a variety of sources and particularly interested in the way societies created a series of visual symbols to represent the things which were important to them. She investigates myths, legends, stories and beliefs. She is also inspired by art, architecture and artefacts.

The Textiles Skills Centre Associates are a team of volunteers that manage the social media platforms and website, and offer support, mentorship and advice to textile teachers and trainees. We organise free resource networking events each month (Tea 'N Chat) and are always on hand to help and encourage when needed.
