<div fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">This two day course will see you go from &#39;Log to Basket&#39;. Beginning with an Ash log, the weekend starts by pounding the ash by hand and then processing the splints yourself into the necessary pieces required. You&#39;ll then get the chance to split the splints further, as well learn knife techniques to prepare the ash for weaving.</div>
<div fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Next begins the basket, you&#39;ll learn about basic weave, and the importance of tension. You&rsquo;ll also get to understand so much more about the properties of Ash; its durability, its flexibility, strengths and weaknesses.</div>
<p fr-original-style="" style="font-size: 16px; color: var(--text); box-sizing: border-box;">Learning these skills will give you the foundations needed to not only weave baskets yourself, but also how to produce materials yourself, adapt future baskets to your own designs, and a guarenteed&nbsp; appreciation of the mighty Ash Tree.</p>

<div fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Ash Splint Basketry has its roots in the indiginous cultures of North America, and many of the techniques used in the making of these baskets also originate from Europe.</div>
<div fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Due to the way Ash trees grow, pounding the logs delaminates them, enabling the harvesting of thin strips of wood. These are then worked further before being woven into baskets.</div>

<p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">I will provide plenty of blocks to get your imagination running, this is an easy craft and ideal for everyone young and old and for any reluctant crafters, it makes for a fun activity for a party or gathering.&nbsp; You will print up a plain item or two to take home and I always have a wide range of textile paint to help you on the way.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Inspired by the Arts &amp; Crafts Movement, design and make an embossed copper shim box in this 3 hour workshop.</p>
<p>An ideal way for beginners to explore the malleability of this colourful metal, whilst making a unique box for keepsakes.</p>
<p>All materials and templates are included in the price.</p>
<p>The class will be no larger than 6 people and held in Bryony's own colourful and eclectic workshop at Coburg House Studios in Leith, Edinburgh.</p>
<p>Due to Covid19 restrictions Bryony cannot provide tea, coffee but she will point you in the direction of some great local Leith Deli's and coffee shops where you can pick up lunch or feel free to bring your own.</p>
<p>In accordance with Covid19 Safety measures students are provided with disposable masks and/ or visors to wear. Social Distance measures have been though of with work spaces 2 meters apart and all tools sanitised before use.</p>

Silk shading is the art of creating shading with threads. This covers glaze stability and food safety, pots for the kitchen, and all the other aspects of producing good, safe, functional work. For those who make their own glazes, it doesn&#39;t go into the glaze chemistry, which is now in a separate course.</p><p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">The course is held over six weekly sessions, 19:00 &ndash; 20:30.</p><p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">These are also recorded and put onto the course web page so you can view them at other times

Attention is also given to all the items that may be used on the table or in the kitchen. Also producing pieces that are frost proof. These are recorded and put on the course web page for those who cannot make the course times due to time zones or other commitments, or for those who want to replay them.</p>

This will be scheduled at the start of the course so that everyone who wishes to has the opportunity to participate.</p>

This includes using tools like Stull and limit formulae, as well as testing glazes in the studio and in the laboratory.&nbsp;</p>
<p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">To consider the food safety of glazes, we look at which components may be toxic and at what levels, and combine this with our work on glaze stability. We also look at food safety legislation .</p>
<p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">We also consider crazing, to determine in which circumstances it may or may not be acceptable, what causes it, and methods by which you can avoid it.</p>

<p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">Intermediate to advanced. Some basic knowledge of glaze chemistry and glaze formulation is required.</p>
<h2 fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?</h2>
<p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">The course is primarily run through the weekly online sessions, which are a live lecture where you can also ask questions or get a discussion going. These are recorded and put on the course web page for those who cannot make the course times due to time zones or other commitments, or for those who want to replay them.</p>
<p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">Additional material that you may wish to explore is on the course website. This will help you go deeper into the subject matter, should you wish to do so.</p>
<p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">There will also be a discussion period towards the end of the course, where we can discuss any of the course material or any more general questions you may have. The date and time will be set up at the start of the course, so as many people as possible can participate even if unable to attend the live sessions.</p>

<p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">You may want to test some of your work or test tiles (which will probably get damaged in the process).&nbsp;<br fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">This mostly uses standard studio and kitchen equipment, though the following are useful if available:</p>

<li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Methylene blue or a similar dark stain (5ml is plenty)</li>

<li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">50g of soda ash</li>
<li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Vinegar or acetic acid</li>
<li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Lemon juice or citric acid</li></ul>
<p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">You may also want to have some glaze recipes that you can examine during the course.</p>
