<div>Our kitchen utensils weekend is designed to give you a taste of all the basic woodworking steps needed to take a project from start to finish. The goal being that you leave the weekend confident you can continue practicing on your own projects at home.</div>

<div>It is worth noting that our course is likely different to the other wooden utensil courses you may have seen, as we opt for dry rather than green wood - we also don&rsquo;t mind using the odd power tool here and there.&nbsp;</div>

<div>So why we do we used dry wood rather than green?&nbsp;</div>

<div>Green wood is far softer and therefore easier to use when it comes to traditional hand carving. However, due to the high moisture content of green wood it also means that pieces need to be dried before they can be completely finished &ndash; which can take weeks if not months.&nbsp;</div>

<div>During our time with us, we want to introduce you to as many techniques and processes as we can &ndash; this coupled with the fact that we come from a commercial carpentry background where speed and efficiency are not only desirable but necessary basically puts green wood out of the picture.&nbsp;</div>

<div>Not only will we teach you the skills needed to carve and sculpt with with dry wood but we will also talking you through the finishing processes and by the end of the weekend you will have a fully refined piece/s.&nbsp;</div>

What is special about this Creative Textile Techniques course a?
This face-to-face course is an experience that delivers textiles skills, knowledge and understanding not available in our other face-to-face courses. Course Developer and Leader: NICKY SIMPSON


Your course leader is NICKY SIMPSON, a contemporary textiles artist, who has 12 years teaching experience, heading up Fashion & Textiles at a school in Kent. She has taught Art & Design Textiles at GCSE and A Level, Design and Technology/Textiles at GCSE & A Level and BTEC Level 3 Fashion. 
Her last set of grades were: A Level 100% A-A*; GCSE 70% A-A* (100% A*-B). She had a previous 22-year career as a print designer and colourist, creating print ranges for the international market. 
Since 2016 Nicky has been a workshop developer and leader for the online and F2F courses for Textile and Art teachers on behalf of the Textile Skills Centre, including pattern development. Nicky has mentored many graduate trainees, and now mentors many fellow teachers through the TSC mentorship programme.

The classic look comes from the Danish furniture designer Hans Wegner, the style of weaving cord has a cool mid century look, and has had a massive rebound in modern day furniture and interior design.What makes Danish cord weaving unique is the fact its NOT a manufactured machining process. This is a pure wheel-throwing pottery course that will take you through the important basics of the process. &nbsp;The course has been designed for beginners, giving you the opportunity to deepen your knowledge across 8 weeks. With a maximum group of 3 students supported by one tutor over 16 hours at the potter&rsquo;s wheel, this course will give you the skills foundation for personal development once the course is completed.There are very few pure wheel-throwing classes of this length in London, most ceramics courses are generalist and give students very limited time on the wheel. During this course you will learn how to wedge clay in order to prepare it for the throwing process, centring clay on the wheel, how to throw a cylinder (think mugs or cups), a bowl, a bottle, a plate and how to trim/turn the items you have made in order to give them a great finish, as well as a glazing session. Nikki taught art for 30 years to secondary school children, and having left full time work in 2016 , has been providing talks, demonstrations, summer schools, workshops to schools, groups and societies. She is a member of various art and textile groups.
She exhibits her work widely and has written a number of articles for both magazines and online sites. She is based in Cheshire and specialises in mixed media textile pieces, taking inspiration from a variety of sources and particularly interested in the way societies created a series of visual symbols to represent the things which were important to them. She investigates myths, legends, stories and beliefs. She is also inspired by art, architecture and artefacts.
