Christow

Alison West www.alisonwestceramics.com [//www.alisonwestceramics.com] and Abi Higgins www.abihiggins.co.uk [//www.abihiggins.co.uk] have been running Saggar, Barrel and Raku Firing workshops since 2018.  Our participants have come from the UK,  Europe and as far as Australia to participate in these alternative firing techniques.  The workshops take place in Abi Higgins' beautiful rural studio and grounds in  Christow, Devon, South West UK with good access to Exeter [https://www.google.com/maps/place/Exeter/@50.7244282,-3.5135475,13z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x486c52c4d4498da7:0xa976e3256bdfad1e!8m2!3d50.7260367!4d-3.5274889] with an airport and train station. A  range of local B&B's and other accommodation is close by.  The two day workshops are intended for all ceramicists with  limited or no previous knowledge of alternative firing techniques  and  those who have experience but would like to learn more about different techniques. The two day workshop will cover types of clay body used for alternative firings, making techniques, raku glaze application and firing, burnishing  and an introduction to two-step naked raku. We also include a horsehair/feather  firing and you will make and fire a 'mummy' saggar as well as preparing pots for a saggar firing with plant decoration. We will load and fire a barrel kiln . Participants would need to bring suitable bisqued pieces - either sculptural or vessel forms but we will have prepared pots for sale at £10 each.  Information on types of clay to use and bisque temperatures will be provided with booking confirmation. Our  focus is on decorating for alternative firing techniques and introduction to firing and gaining confidence with raku and saggar kilns.

Coombe Farm Studios

Devon

Coombe is a small-scale rural centre, dedicated to growing creativity. It’s a place where you can develop new skills, supported by a beautiful environment, great food & people who actively enable the creative process. It’s also a place to make and show work, connect with nature and get inspired. We opened in 1983, it was one of the first small artist-led centres offering week-long creative courses. Since then, over the past 35 years, we are lucky to have developed an amazing network of people from all over the world. Our core activity is a mix of tutored art retreats that run year-round, bespoke projects for the creative community and showcasing new work on and off site. We celebrate difference, enjoy the messy ways of the creative process, celebrating the tricky bits, sharing in the successes and frustrations, encouraging others to explore and share the process of making. We are interested in cultivating wisdom, courage and wonder, and we believe in action. We collaborate and look for synergies with others, to ensure that we, as well as the people we work with, aren’t burnt out, bored, disillusioned or skint, but rather nourished, inspired, committed, passionate, and working within resource limits. Our small-scale allows us to be attentive to the simple things we believe make a great place to create, learn and research – skills-based tuition from passionate professions, a relaxed atmosphere, a beautiful environment, delicious food and great company.
