Born and raised in Birmingham, Tom has always been obsessed with making things. This obsession continued right through school and on to London where he studied furniture making. It was whilst in London his unusual style prompted his teacher to suggest he study sculpture. Taking his teachers advice after completing the year, he moved back to Birmingham and began his sculpture degree in Wolverhampton commuting daily before opting to move to West Wales School of Art - where they teach the fascinating process of bronze casting - to complete his degree. After completing his degree, Tom once again moved back to Birmingham where he continued his sculpture practise alongside working with family to further refine the carpentry and woodworking skills he learnt in London before setting up by himself a few years ago. The relatively recent decision to start offering courses came about almost by chance. The positive experience Tom had in West Wales ignited a desire to want to teach his skills to others – something that became even more apparent after taking on a couple of apprentices. However, with business being so busy it wasn’t until the apprentices highlighted the lack of woodworking courses available in the Birmingham area outside of full-time college or university courses. It was at this point Tom realised that this would be a great opportunity to give those interested in woodworking a way in without having to commit full time.

Rooted by materials, training and history to The Black Country village of the same name for over thirty years, using clay and metal to make truly unique pieces of use. At Woodsetton two generations and an upcoming third, have made their livings as designer makers for over 50 years. David Bates, a furniture designer and manufacture, and Gill Bates an antique dealer, later came together to work with pewter. The Victorian house and workshops which housed their early business was built by the Parkes family of Iron founders who were descendants of Abraham Derby 1st, and so there has been a long line of metal working at this address. For the latter 30 years Lorraine Bates has run a pottery here using stoneware and metal to make pieces of use. The combination of these two materials has an illustrious history in the Black Country in the shape of The Ruskin Pottery who made stoneware in The Arts and Crafts tradition and ethos which is still a strong influence on our work. Lorraine Bates and the team at Woodsetton, now have a history of making for galleries, museums and exhibitions in the UK, America, Japan and Europe.

Hi, I'm Debbie and this is my business Lookwhatdebbiedid. I'm 43 and live in Staffordshire with my husband and daughter. I've been doing this now since 2018 and I completely love it! I thought some of you may wonder about my background and how my adventure all began (I fell into all of this a bit by mistake). Long story short, it went something like this; Left university at 21 with a 3-D interior architecture degree. Worked as a commercial interior designer for the next 18 years doing bars, hotels, casinos etc. Loved it but got very stressed at work, got married, got pregnant. Thought I could keep juggling a two year old with a hectic, competitive career. Tried for another year, epic fail....ended up sad, stressed and not myself at all. Tried a local painting class to clear my head after work and fell in love with it. Sold a painting.... then another.... then after a while got braver.... said goodbye to Interior design.... and hello new career! And somehow, here I am. Obviously there was quite a lot more involved than this, but this is the general series of events!

I started running 'Creative Maker' sessions in 2019 after several years spent working in Italy and raising a family. My passion lies in creating textured, abstract acrylic painting, oil pastel drawing and I enjoy exploring mosaics. My work has featured in several local exhibitions where I have also won awards. With over over 10 years of experience and expertise working with children creatively, the sessions are a free exploration of methods and materials. Children (and adults) are free to make choices, and then change their minds - there is no right or wrong, just safe practise and exciting art discoveries. We look at a new theme each week which leads to brilliant creations! We also have ART PARTY TAKEAWAY boxes and FAMILY CRAFT packs to inspire your making.
