Description

Celebrate Chinese New Year and the year of the tiger with this special Amigurumi crochet-along.

Tigers are symbols of strength, courage and perseverance and you certainly need some of that character when it comes to small scale crochet!

Tallulah is crocheted continuously in the round, and almost in 1 piece. You'll only need some basic crochet stitch know-how (US terms) and I'll show you some sew as you go techniques so any dodgy stitching and finishing gets hidden secretly inside. There are a couple of fiddly elements to this make, but nothing a determined tiger can't handle! She can be made into a fridge magnet, a brooch or a key ring if you like too!

This workshop takes place online so you will need to have access to ZOOM and the materials listed below to crochet-along. Some crochet skills are essential but it's also great for adventurous beginners interested in this style of crochet and anyone else who wants to join in.

What you'll need to craft along . . .

  • a 2.0mm crochet hook*
  • 4 ply or fine double-knit yarn**
  • a stitch marker
  • 3mm black bead
  • 3mm white sequins (optional)
  • toy filling
  • a big eye and a fine eye needle
  • matching threads
  • scissors
  • a cuppa tea and a biscuit

*Don't worry if a 2.0mm crochet hook fills you with absolute dread - you can make the same tiger with a larger hook and chunkier yarn.

**I used Drops Soft Tweed in 18 Carrot Cake and Sirdar Haworth Tweed in 907 Rydale Russet for my tigers and some odds and ends for features. You won't need too much of anything so ideal for using up yarns you happen to have.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I use a bigger hook and chunkier yarn?

Yep! Small scale crochet can be quite daunting, but the patterns will still work if you want to use other hooks or yarns. You'll just end up with a bigger finished make.

When it comes to making softies or anything that's stuffed I always recommend using a hook that's smaller than suggested for your yarn so you get a tighter fabric and don't see any filling through the holes. Get in touch if you need any advice.

  • Is this CAL suitable for beginners?

I'm all up for beginners challenging themselves, especially if it's something you really want to make. It's how I learned.

But this make will challenge you so you'll find having a few basic skills helpful, as well as some of that tiger courage and determination.
