Welcome to the Maire Curtis Essential Blackwork course.

This course has been designed to guide the complete beginner or act as a refresher for those who may have dabbled in Blackwork embroidery in the past.

We will cover the history, styles of Blackwork embroidery, threads and techniques.

  • How to use thread thickness and colour to shade.

  • Specific Blackwork Stitches.

  • How to read charts.

  • Use of part stitches.
    Adapting a Blackwork stitch to fill in a shape.

All guided by your tutor who has over 25 years experience in professional embroidery.

Learning Outcome

At the end of this course you will have learned all the essential blackwork embroidery techniques to allow you to go on and create your own pieces.

Throughout the course you will have one to one tutor access via e.mail for 6 months.

(We make every attempt to answer e.mails the same day).

Certificate upon completion.

Included in the kit;

*Fabrics. (We use a high quality Zweigart Aida and even weave). with pre drawn design in water soluble ink on main project piece.
*Spiral bound, lay flat course booklet or Access to our Online learning course (English text).
*All threads necessary to complete the project.

* Relevant charts and designs.
*Needle book containing the appropriate high quality John James needles and needle threader.
All presented in a box which you can use to keep your work clean as you stitch.

What’s not included

Scissors and dampened cotton wool pad to remove traces of initial project lines once finished.

Basic skills required
No previous skill is required but you will need fairly good eye sight (or your glasses/magnifier) and be able to hold a sewing needle.

Damage or Omissions
If your package or an item in it has been damaged in the post, please contact us within three days of receipt.
Your kit is carefully hand packed by your tutor, checked and double checked but if we have missed anything, then just let us know.

Allergy Advice
Our embroidery kits are packed in our studio which does use natural animal fibres.
