We are a group of teachers, musicians and technologists who specialise in composition, improvisation and performance using iPads. Ben Sellers and Travis Snyder began running music workshops with iPads in a Hackney community centre in 2011, developing an approach that combined outstanding musical outcomes with implicit development of musicianship and theory. They transferred this approach to both formal mainstream and SEND/ALN contexts, codifying their methods into what became the 2014 textbook ‘Teaching Music with Garageband for iPad’, and a popular teacher training scheme. In 2016, Travis returned to California to become the head of Assistive Technology for the San Francisco District School Board. 2017 saw the publication of several new resources, including a second edition of the Garageband textbook and an increased focus on training partnerships with Music Education Hubs. Since 2018 we have gained an increasingly strong reputation as SEND/ALN specialists, working with MEHs up and down the country to improve provision through co-delivery and bespoke training and resources, including a complete ‘SEN/D Curriculum’ with Leicester-Shire Music Service, and a set of projects for the Charanga education platform. We were nominated twice in the 2019 ‘Music Teacher Awards for Excellence’. Though our reputation has grown, we remain a small and focussed team, working hard to develop in young people the skill, desire and drive to use music to enhance their lives.

One of our main priorities this year will be to ensure, as far as we can, that no child is left behind and that every child is challenged by the curriculum that we have in place. Students should find things difficult, although not impossible, at times. They should struggle at times and be expected to think deeply about the work that they do. They shouldn’t be getting everything right all of the time; if they are, the work is too easy and they’re not being challenged. None of this means that they shouldn’t be enjoying their learning; being challenged can be enjoyable. The curriculum is the bread and butter of our educational offer and should be inspiring a real thirst for learning; we can only do this through supporting and challenging. Doula UK was founded in 2001 to promote life-changing support from skilled doulas for families in the childbearing year regardless of circumstance, while advocating for better support for UK families. We have approximately 700 doulas working in all parts of the United Kingdom. Each member must complete Doula UK approved training, go through a rigorous mentoring and recognition process and comply with Doula UK code of conduct and policies. We nurture our membership, so they can unconditionally support the needs of everyone involved in pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period. OI was founded on the belief that there is a better way to achieve data centre optimisation compared to traditional consulting. OI uses collaborative working with a blend of consultancy and training to reduce data centre risk, energy and cost. Let’s use an energy assessment as an example. Traditionally, a consultant will obtain site temperature and power readings, assess the situation and give recommendations for improvement measures. Typically, there will be one point of contact (most likely management-level) who receives the report. They may not transfer the information it contains effectively with other stakeholders, and once the consultant leaves, so too does their expertise. Now let’s consider training. Traditionally this is completed off-site, it will be non-site specific and aimed at individuals or individual teams with little to no cross-over between subject areas. Duffey & Saull found that failure rate can be expressed in terms of accumulated learning experience of an organisation, and the depth of experience of an individual. When experience is at a minimum, risk is at a maximum. A learning environment in the data centre is therefore imperative, and it must involve every individual from the ground up.
