Monitoring the oceans with UPC technology The UPC’s Laboratory of Applied Bioacoustics (LAB), the Chilean Ministry of the Environment and MERI Foundation installed the first smart buoy of The Blue BOAT Initiative in the Corcovado Gulf, Chile. Equipped with cutting-edge LIDO technology developed by the UPC, the buoy monitors in real time marine biodiversity and the impact of human activities on the ecosystem. The data obtained will allow to alert vessels of the presence of whales to avoid collisions.

We use art and performance to promote positive body image, health and well-being to the public. We also use ‘art-ivism’ to highlight environmental issues focusing on the oceans and aquatic mammals. Our performances are unique and we pride ourselves in making work that is distinctive and brave as well as entertaining.We have a dry land synchronised swimming dance show, a water based team ( Bramley Mermaids) and run numerous workshops on land and in water with real mermaids! The Marine Biological Association (MBA) is one of the world’s longest-running societies dedicated to promoting research into our oceans and the life they support. Since 1884 we have been providing a unified, clear, independent voice on behalf of the marine biological community and currently have a growing membership in over 40 countries. Below you can see a timeline of our history.The Association, MBA President and Council are responsible to the Privy Council for ensuring that business is conducted in accordance with the object and powers as expressed in the Royal Charter. Its governance structure and practices are described in the bylaws supported by a set of regulations. We are also registered as a charity and regulated by the Charity Commission. The MBA is governed by its members through a distinguished Council who also function as the Board of Trustees. The Board is chaired by the MBA President and supported by three trustee sub-committees; Membership and Engagement, Research, and Finance, Audit and Risk.

Yoga has been a stable thread from my late teens all the way into motherhood, from cities to mountains and oceans and has always provided a doorway to local communities. Movement and rest have always been big parts of my life, enjoying both equally. As a child I loved climbing trees and getting muddy as much as snoozing in front of the fire or getting lost in a book. As an adult, not much changed other than a greater appreciation for maintaining just the right balance between the two. Motherhood has only amplified this need for ‘just the right amount’ of movement and rest which has naturally influenced and inspired my teaching.

As an artist and teacher working predominantly, but not exclusively in Gobeiln tapestry, content is paramount in the development of my work. I aim to create a dialogue between the subject, materials and viewer. While traditional techniques and craftsmanship are important it is the idea, the vision and my hand that defines the work. Growing up in the city, but by the water’s edge, the sea is enormously important in my life. Over the last 35 years it has provided me with a starting point for my creative journey. Whether from personal experience or research my aim is not to create a representation of the seas and oceans but something experienced, a deeply felt personal connection. It is as much a self-portrait as it is a reflection on the sea.

Creating Awareness Plastic in our oceans is a huge environmental and health problem. Reducing plastic from our everyday lives will help reduce the need for and cost of recycling. This is important because recycling streams are not correctly managed, and many are dysfunctional. We also need to correctly dispose of our plastic and other unwanted items, choosing to reuse, repurpose or give it away. Keeping plastic out of our oceans (and our food chain) is a big issue which is why I organise beach and underwater clean ups wherever and whenever I can. I also enjoy visiting schools to give presentations that include short videos about marine life, and coral reefs. Plus, we discuss the different types of plastic, how it is affecting the environment and how we can all try to ‘Say No To Plastic’.
