LOOKING FOR: NON-FICTION Eli Keren started his publishing career at Curtis Brown before joining United Agents as an assistant in 2016. In 2021 he became an associate literary agent, representing a growing list of clients across fiction and non-fiction, actively seeking books that are going to make a positive impact in the world in some way, big or small. His role as an agent at Curious Minds Literary Agency began in 2024. Before working in books, Eli was a research scientist designing and synthesising novel drugs (white coat and everything), and science books remain a particular passion of his. In 2022 he wrote and taught a HOW TO WRITE A PROPOSAL course, and in 2023 was elected treasurer of the Association of Authors’ Agents, and in 2024 he judged the inaugural Bloomsbury Academic Writing Fellowship. Eli specialises in helping academics, scientists and researchers to bring their area of expertise to the mass-market in authoritative, ideas-led books in the fields of smart science and current affairs. He is particularly interested in popular science and cultural history, as well as issues-led books and social justice. An Introduction to Medical Terminology short course delivered online via Teams, suitable for anyone wishing to learn the basics of terminology. Level One – Introduction to Medical Terminology. “It's like a light has just been switched on and I now understand more of what I'm doing!” – Feedback from attendee of Level one course. This course is aimed at anyone who requires a knowledge of medical terminology in their role. It is suitable for administrative staff, health care workers, medical secretaries, managers, Allied Health Professionals, essentially anyone who may encounter medical terminology and wishes to develop their medical terminology knowledge further. We also offer sessions to those requiring an overview of medical terminology to support applications to study medicine, veterinary medicine or dentistry.We can train between 1-30 learners from any organisation. If you have a specific training request, please speak to us and we can accommodate your needs. We recently trained a group of sign language interpreters who found the training invaluable when working in medical environments.The sessions are delivered via Teams (2x 2 hour meetings) so are highly accessible, a webcam and microphone are required although not essential.The aim of the course is for learners to develop an understanding of medical terminology in an enjoyable, interactive and informative way so that they are better able to decipher and unravel the mystery of long medical words.The course covers the following topics:- Basics of medical terminology – word building Common Roots, prefixes and suffixes Anatomy and physiology via a virtual tour of the body Major bones of the body Prescription writing and abbreviations Classification of drugs Common Abbreviations Instruments and investigations Medical Specialities and personnel Blood tests At the end of the course students will have a clear understanding of medical terminology and are encouraged to use their newly learned skills in a series of quizzes and interactive games. She is an Associate Agent and assistant to Senior Agent Annabel Merullo and Head of Books Tim Bates as the UK sub-agent for New Directions Publishing in the US. Daisy is actively building a list of both fiction and non-fiction authors across a range of genres. With fiction, Daisy's wishlist roughly falls into three categories – if something feels like it overlaps between them, even better! 1) Sharp, original novels on the literary to upmarket spectrum, all the way from deeply dark and boundary-pushing books like Hurricane Season, Under The Skin or In The Cut to those balancing edge, heart and humour, like Detransition, Baby or A Visit From The Goon Squad. She loves irreverent wit, daring approaches in narrative or form, and seriously unsettling stories in equal measure, and if you can bring a few of those elements into one, it’ll go straight to the top of her. 2) Com-heavy rom-coms, whether in the dry but ultimately sob-inducing vein of Greta and Valdin or a Nora Ephron film, the escapist screwball delight of a Cary Grant classic, or the more unusual, genre-bending style of something like Palm Springs. Daisy is a sucker for Emily Henry and will always be happy to see an innovative take on tropey love stories, but is equally very keen to see to things a bit outside of the box, whether that’s integrating speculative elements, dark humour, or topical issues. In any case, humour and originality are my priority, and affectionately snarky bickering is the best way to make her fall head over heels with a couple. 3) Sleuths! Daisy is not the right person for police procedurals, but loves classic detectives and amateur sleuths. Whether it’s a delightful Knives Out or Nancy Drew homage or an intricate, unputdownable mystery on the darker side, the minute someone finds a good old fashioned clue, count her in! Overall, whether it’s a delightfully fun and scandalous page-turner or something really bold and experimental, if it’s stylish and smart – and maybe even a bit sexy – Daisy would love to see it. Daisy is definitely interested in literary speculative fiction, though not generally looking for hard SFF. Across the board, she is always looking for stories that explore sexuality, race, gender, and disability, and would particularly love to hear from writers whose voices and experiences aren’t given enough space in publishing. On the non-fiction side, Daisy is looking for bold new insights and underrepresented voices on popular science, nature writing, relationships, social issues and politics, and am always especially interested in fresh, playful and exciting writing on pop culture, love and the internet. She’d also love to see illuminating narrative non-fiction, whether a beautiful and lyrical exploration, or an enthralling and explosive deep-dive. At GMC, Maddy worked her way up to Agent and built a list of authors who wrote for both for adults and children, spanning history, tarot, and nature writing. An avid reader of anything magical, Maddy joined Madeleine Milburn in 2022 to build a list specialising in SFF. Maddy would like to see SFF across all genres for all ages, including: grim dark, thriller, historical, romance, cosy fantasy, sci-fi, epic, YA fantasy, dark academia, contemporary fantasy, fantasy middle-grade, mythology, fairy tale and queer fantasy. Inspiring children’s non-fiction. She loves worlds to get lost in, adventures that transform what it means to be a hero, and unique magic that offers as many problems as solutions. She likes books that make her cry and books that change her mind. Above all, when she finishes a story about another world, she wants it to have taught her a lesson which helps her live in this one. She loves all fantasy, but favours richly imagined, complex worlds with a history to discover and a future to protect. Worldbuilding is one of her favourite aspects of this genre and she is always looking for a new, dense world with series potential. Think Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere or the Marvel Cinematic Universe – the bigger the better! She also likes character-driven fantasy with a diverse cast to root for (or root against) and she wants to see a range of different relationships depicted authentically. She particularly like epics that dip into big, universal themes such as grief, climate change, or war and which ask impossible questions in the vein of R.F. Kuang or N.K. Jemisin. She is also excited by authors that play with form and language in a fantasy setting. In YA, she is looking for much the same as in an adult fantasy, but with younger protagonists and a closer focus on relationships. She wants to see the tropes she knows and loves in new and exciting forms and her favourite YA books often centre around belonging and becoming. She likes a dash of romance in everything, because she is sentimental that way, but it’s particularly important in the YA space. Sci-fi is a big passion of hers, especially when it comes with a strong hook. She is a huge fan of Becky Chamber’s The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet and Michaiah Johnson’s The Space Between Worlds. She likes space as a metaphor, and would love something that explores different alien species. Please send her your space operas and sci-fi romances which combine space, magic and mayhem! In fantasy middle grade, she favours whimsy and animal companions; she would love to follow a group of kids through magic school. She tends to look for plenty of humour with a strong friendship at the centre, and she wants middle grade stories which engage with the concerns of children growing up as well as offering an all-important escape (preferably on a dragon/unicorn’s back). She is also looking for children’s non-fiction for all ages. In this space, she wants something as creative as it is informative, and thinks diverse voices are increasingly important. London Writing School offers online writing workshops designed to offer some inspiration, make you think about the craft of writing and carve out some time in the day to get pen to paper.  Our paid courses allow you develop an idea at your own pace. Who are the workshops for? Perhaps you want to give writing a go but aren’t sure what will happen. Maybe you used to write and want to get back to it. Or you write, but would like more structured inspiration and a practice session. The sessions are designed so that you can make the most of them whatever stage you're at.  What do we do? We usually have a warm up exercise around the theme of the workshop, do a little bit free writing, and then there’s a chance to build a more structured scene that could go on to become a short story, or even spark an idea for a novel. If you are full of ideas we hope to bring them into sharper focus, if you’re feeling a bit creatively empty we aim to fill you up and get you going again.  Do we share work? In the free sessions we don’t read out work or share it with others. Come and experiment with no judgement. About the teacher I've been shortlisted for various awards and schemes including the BBC Writers’ Room, Crime Writers Association Debut Dagger, Theatre 503 seed commissions and the Launch Pad Manuscript Competition. I write in different forms. My work has been on stage in London, audio drama 'The Grove' has thousands of downloads and my novel 'A Company of Roses' is available on Amazon. I have an MA in Screenwriting and a PGCE from Goldsmiths University where my focus was on creativity.
