Sallerton Wood has a wide diversity of habitats including valley-side Ash woodland, Hazel coppice, Alder woodland, and a stream. Traditional management methods such as coppicing are practised, often with local community involvement on Craft and Conservation Day events. It is a place of education for people interested in learning about traditional and sustainable woodland management methods, and the utilization of woodland timber to make craft products. Forest School sessions are available for accompanied young children from the local community. Tutor-led Green Woodwork courses are offered to make products such as mallets, spatulas, spoons, bowls, kuksas, shave horses, stools, and chairs from green wood. These courses take place in workshop shelters within the heart of the woodland. Hi! Welcome to Touch Wood. My name is Maurice Clother and I am a forester and green woodworker based in rural Herefordshire. Using sustainably harvested native hardwoods, I make a wide range of items from turnery and treen to furniture, treebogs and other timber framed structures. I have long had a fascination for traditional woodland crafts, and have researched the subject exhaustively, and been lucky to be able to develop my skills and understanding of the ways traditional woodland crafts can swiftly transform wood into useful and attractive items. The use of hand tools and the skills our ancestors possessed are still accessible to us today; we just need to sharpen up those old tools and make the journey into the wood! I have been a teacher of green woodwork since 2001. Throughout 2022 I am able to offer a series of courses from April in our canvas covered workshop, within the beautiful woodlands of May Hill just over the county border in Gloucestershire.

ANDY BROWNE WOOD sells and designs individual creations ideally suited to the selected wood. He specialises in different woods and finishes using Pyrography and paints to enhance what would possibly be a bit of 'boring' wood! Special woods need no extras, they shine in their own right without any treatment, just subtle finishes to enhance their own individual beauty. Here I am in my well equipped workshop with a VB36 lathe, one of two that I use for lessons/tuition, my other two lathes are Union Graduates which I have updated myself with variable speed.

I've always been impatient which is why I think wood turning suits me. I can mount a piece of wood on my lathe and within a relatively short time I can have a finished piece...well, that's the theory. I started turning more than 20 years ago when I owned a gallery, framing & restoration business with my wife on the Isle of Wight. It was an ideal opportunity for me to develop the skills required to turn pieces which were good enough to sell in the gallery. I co-founded the Isle of Wight Wood Turners Club and we had regular meetings with guest turners doing demonstrations every month. I started doing some demonstrations myself to save the club money and these demonstrations intensified my learning curve. The club is still going strong and I left the island and moved back to Scotland where I had bought some land and built a house. Wood turning took a back seat as I concentrated on the build but eventually I was able to get back to it and now have all the time I need to concentrate on turning.

We provide a range of specialised equipment including soldering stations suitable for casting, pickling tanks, wheel and barrel polishers, ultrasonic tank, bubble etching tanks for copper and silver, fly press, ring stretchers, stone setting tools, heavy duty vices, bench drills, hammering stumps, silversmithing hammers, draw bench and plates, metal guillotine, rolling mill, large and small kilns. We have an extensive collection of resource books on techniques and practices to support both our emerging and established makers.
