In an early article regarding molar memories, Joe Griffin termed them ‘an ancient mechanism that is ruining lives’; and the impact of such driven urges on the lives of our clients cannot be underestimated. Molar memories can, on first encountering the theory, seem complicated and unfathomable, but this course will set them – and sub-threshold traumas and the use of the affect bridge to access both – within a clear framework of understanding, linking back to the way in which our brain perceives things (referencing the APET model) and to RIGAAR (how we structure a good therapy session). During the course, numerous case studies will be shared and used as the basis for exercises, and there will be ample opportunity to link the learning to your own experiences in the therapy room. Building Shared Dreams. The group thinks together about what they would love to see happening for children, families and practitioners in their settings if they could have it all. If there were no constraints on time, money, resources, people or anything else what do they see happening in their imaginations? The various ideas that the group comes up with are then recorded in key words, images and colours on the MAP [https://inclusive-solutions.com/product/maps-process-step-by-step-guide/] graphic. The purpose of this Step is to give the group a sense of direction, their North Star, an image of the place they want to work towards. 3. Nightmare. In this Step, the group imagines the worst scenarios. What is the opposite of their dreams? How bad could it get? This is a shorter but powerful process that can give some groups more energy than dreaming together. 4. Gifts and Capacity. In this Step the group is asked to take explicit stock of their capacities and what they already have going for them as they begin working towards the vision. This is a strong reminder for any group of the wealth of knowledge and experience that is already and always in the room. 5. Needs. In this Step the group is invited to begin to name some of the needs they will have if they are to move forward to wards the dream and away from the nightmare. 6. Actions. This is the final Step in the MAP [https://inclusive-solutions.com/product/maps-process-step-by-step-guide/] and calls for individuals within the group to name a range of very specific actions (however small) that they will take within a definite time scale. This is not a time for declaring good intentions or suggesting good ideas for someone else to do. ‘Yes’ is to accept an ‘offer’. ‘And’ is to build on that offer. ‘Yes’ is to agree to be on a threshold. ‘And’ is to step over that threshold and offer, receive or discover new information. When we improvisers say ‘Yes, And’ to an offer, we allow for divergent (aka ‘blue-sky’) and creative thinking that follows the points of interest and engagement in a conversation, rather than following a pre-written agenda. It also makes sure – because we always accept the ‘Yes’ and specifically build on that ‘Yes’ with our ‘And’ – that everyone remains on track and on topic, without any wild or left-field or non-relevant additions. It also means there are no denials or blocks and, equally, there are no wildly disparate or ‘out there’ suggestions. So by creating an environment without blocks, wild tangents or stagnant thinking, ‘Yes, And’ keeps a group on topic, imaginative and in flow. Improvisers acknowledge that many people (ourselves included), prefer to say ‘No’ or ‘Yes, But’. Saying ‘No’ makes humans feel more in control and safe. “Shall we try this new thing?” “No!” (I’m busy, it’s untested, there’s good reasons not to – and essentially, it feels safer to say “No”). So we can afford to go with the flow a bit more often and to work our ‘accept and build’ muscles. When we get in the habit of saying ‘Yes, And’, it guarantees more focused, meaningful conversations, clearer routes to creativity, better teamwork. It puts more options on the table. Even better, it encourages imaginative connections instead of competitions involving egos. It’s good for rapport. It means we think fast and shiny. It’s the clearest route to pure play. And play is key. Play where we imagine, invent, create, and solve. Play is how and where we humans human to our best potential.
