You Press is an award-winning social enterprise based in London. Our projects empower young people (between 16-30 years old) and underrepresented communities to find their voice and be heard. This involves challenging stereotypes and stigmas about young people and communities through the creative arts, media, training and writing. We are committed to working with young people & communities from varied social and cultural backgrounds.

sankofa storytelling arts

San'ko fa' - a phrase from the Akan lexicon, a society from West Africa who arguably viewed time as an experiential, learning tool. Our interpretation of Sankofa is loosely based on the concept of embracing the wisdom from all experiences and lessons from the past, in order to responsibly enhance and inform our future; individually, societally and environmentally. Or in other words, to offer alternative solutions to perceived obstacles. Distilling applied theatre to foster and support critical and courageous thinking during a child’s educational journey is distinctive in that at the heart of our applications are the routes to wellness and mindfulness as an innate and constantly developing feature. Applied theatre is an exciting format – sometimes interchangeable with applied drama or social drama – and is primarily a transformative and transparent process whereby the issues that are raised are teased and explored by and for participants.

HUMAN is a storytelling and strategy agency that creates media for social impact. What We Believe Δ is core to being human. The Greek letter Delta (δέλτα) is a symbol used to denote change. As humans, we are constantly evolving. When we change, we change the world around us. The opportunity to improve the human condition through storytelling inspires us to create and innovate. Change is our ethos. Human emotions are created by our experiences. These emotions are the primary influence of the choices we make. Collectively, these choices determine how humans behave which then affects the experience of other human beings. Stories allow other’s to step into the world of another. Storytelling has the power to inspire us to be our best and disrupt cycles of violence by challenging the narratives of fear. Stories allow us to feel the emotion of our own experience and the experience of others which develops deeper empathy and understanding.

Rustic Spirit holds performing arts and wellness workshops, storytelling events and produce film in different communities in London focusing heavily on helping beneficiaries through poverty, challenging mental health and exploitation. Our beneficiaries are primarily women and young people who would not otherwise have access to services or who are in need of support with their mental health. We also empower our beneficiaries to volunteer for charitable events within the company, therefore building up their CV and work ethic.

It’s inbuilt, so why not learn to use it to your advantage to turn ideas into actions and outcomes? We met at university at the tail end of the last millennium, on a theatre studies BA. Josh then worked with vulnerable adults for a housing association, whilst developing his skills as a storytelling performer in museums, festivals and schools. Lily continued post graduate studies at Central School of Speech and Drama and gained an MA at Goldsmiths, while devising theatre productions as a director. Our paths crossed again on a project with young actors in Mumbai where we discovered we enjoyed working together. On our return we started to deliver open storytelling workshops as a means to develop our product and explore its uses and applications. Initially, we thought storytelling was perfect for presentation skills and museum tours. Now we also use it to investigate and build understanding with individuals and in collaborative groups as well as to grow connections, values and relationships. Ben Joiner became one of the core team in 2014. We were drawn to his in-depth knowledge and expertise in voice and body-language and his gift to comfortably take people outside their comfort zone. Over the past couple of decades, we have honed our skills and our love of training and coaching. We have stayed curious, and use that curiosity to help us adapt and evolve how we use storytelling to the benefit of contemporary working life.

IMMUTO IS AN EVER CHANGING COLLECTIVE OF ARTISTS AND IDEAS CREATING TRANSFORMATIONAL SPACES AND STORIES THAT EXPLORE HUMAN CONNECTIONS. THROUGH CROSS-CULTURE AND CROSS-DISCIPLINE COLLABORATIONS AND EXPLORATIONS, IMMUTO IMMERSES THE AUDIENCE IN SENSORY SPACES AND LAYERED NARRATIVES THAT CAN CHANGE HOW PEOPLE FEEL, THINK AND ACT - FOR CULTURAL, URBAN AND BRAND ENVIRONMENTS. -- Founder and artistic director of Immuto, Francesca Lando is a visual artist. She creates immersive installations, often inspired by the intersections of science and spirituality and developed through interdisciplinary collaborations. Her fascination with the transformational power of spaces and embodied knowledge is intertwined with the storytelling experience gathered in the marketing world. Her projects play with our senses and sense of self to tell stories that cannot be told with words alone, in a long term research on the themes of identity and union. Art works so far include: Invisible Labyrinth 2021, an installation and video choreography for Spazio Leonardo in collaboration with UNA gallery; Once Upon Us 2019, a cross-disciplinary installation, workshop and debate in collaboration with Queen Mary University and London Festival of Architecture; Light of the Forest 2018-2019, an immersive and sensory installation selected for Art Fair Finland 2019.

africa writes - exeter

Africa Writes festival is a biennial celebration of contemporary literature from Africa and the diaspora, brought to you by the Royal African Society and presented in partnership with the British Library. The tenth edition of the festival introduces brand new regional partnerships that sees the festival co-curate satellite events in Leeds, Swindon and Birmingham. We will start on Saturday 5th March 2022 at Leeds Literary Festival in partnership with British Library Bath Spa, Geraldine Connor Foundation and Leeds University Centre for African Studies. The programme has been curated by Khadijah Ibrahiim with additional sponsorship from Flutterwave. Future dates will be announced on our Africa Writes 2022 festival page. Launched in 2012, Africa Writes showcases established and emerging talent from the African continent and its diaspora in what is now the UK’s biggest celebration of contemporary African writing taking place over an exciting summer weekend. The festival features book launches, readings, author appearances, panel discussions, family workshops, and other activities. Our previous headline speakers have been Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Ngugi wa Thiong’o with son Mukoma wa Ngugi, Wole Soyinka, Ama Ata Aidoo, Ben Okri, Nawal El Saadawi, Alain Mabanckou, Chigozie Obioma, Mona Elthahawy and Nana Darkoa Sekyiamah.
