The > confidence Pamela has given me will impact positively on my everyday practice, > I am truly inspired... > > PSYCHOTHERAPIST WHY TAKE THIS COURSE Children’s natural affinity with stories gives us an incredibly powerful, non-directive way to help emotionally distressed and abused young people, who can sometimes be hard to reach in any other way.  On this practical live training event you will learn how to tap into your own metaphorical brain to create therapeutic stories and metaphors ‘in the moment’ that are appropriate to each individual’s circumstances and experiences. Throughout the day Pamela – a master storyteller and highly experienced psychotherapist – draws on her own case histories, metaphor and story examples as she guides you through the steps involved in ‘thinking on your feet’ and creating a story yourself in the moment.  By the end of the day you will have lots of new, innovative ways to engage with and help distressed children deal with the experiences they have had – whilst also offering them hope, understanding, and new ways of thinking and feeling about life and themselves. Indeed, you may well be surprised at how quickly positive psychological changes occur as a result of the stories you will create and tell ‘in the moment’. Stories also play a crucial role in child development – through the ways the different characters think, act and overcome difficulties, children gain important templates for understanding the world and dealing with the challenges and situations they will meet in life – both now and in the future. They are a wonderful way to help build resilience. Storytelling and the careful use of therapeutic metaphor are crucial elements of successful counselling and psychotherapy – they help bypass assumptions and rigid thinking to offer a new, broader way of looking at things, awaken innate resources and offer crucial hope – just what struggling children need… > Wonderful, interactive online course. The Rewind Technique: Effective treatment for trauma (PTSD) and phobias

By Human Givens College

Essential skill for all mental health professionals This 2-day workshop gives you the opportunity to see demonstrated, experience, and practice the steps of this powerful technique in a small group under the careful guidance of our expert tutor… -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Accredited CPD Certificate : 12 hours * Length 2 days (9:30am - 4:00pm) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Excellent course. A brilliantly encouraging and supportive environment in > which to learn > > HARRIET, WORKSHOP PARTICIPANT > Life-changing! A great weight has been lifted off my shoulders. > > NURSE (PREVIOUSLY TRAUMATISED BY A CAR ACCIDENT) WHY TAKE THIS COURSE We have over 20 years of experience in teaching the rewind technique to health and welfare professionals – we’ve drawn on that experience to develop a course which gives you enough time to thorough absorb and practice the technique, understand why it works and to experience it yourself, so that you leave confident in your ability to use the rewind safely and effectively. The Rewind Technique* is an effective psychological intervention for successfully treating trauma and phobias and one of the most important skills you need to master to be able to work successfully with any anxiety disorder or condition which may have developed as a result of unresolved trauma. Even the most severe phobic and post-traumatic stress (PTSD) symptoms can be successfully addressed using the the rewind technique taught on this 2-day course, which has been refined [https://www.humangivens.com/college/rewind-technique-training-workshop/#refined]* in line with understandings from neuroscience to make it as safe and reliably effective as possible. An essential therapeutic technique to have in your therapeutic ‘toolkit’, it is important to learn and practice it under the careful guidance of our expert tutor [https://www.humangivens.com/college/rewind-technique-training-workshop/#note] – you will leave the course knowing how to use the rewind technique safely and effectively having watched live demonstrations, had plenty of time to practice the steps involved with fellow students, the opportunity to experience the technique yourself and more. [https://www.humangivens.com/college/rewind-technique-training-workshop/#gain] Our workshop has limited numbers so you will have plenty of opportunities for asking questions and the tutor, who has extensive clinical experience. Using the rewind technique you can, often surprisingly quickly, detraumatise bad memories, stop flashbacks and other PTSD symptoms, cure phobias, banish nightmares and reduce anxiety so you can help the victims of abuse, rape, violence, car accidents, fire, terrorism and panic attacks, heart attacks and other life-threatening experiences. Another key benefit of this technique is non disclosure – there is no need for people to repeatedly revisit or talk about specific details of the events that have traumatised them.  This helps avoid embedding the trauma further and making the situation worse – as can sometimes inadvertently happen in other therapeutic approaches to treating trauma – and helps prevent the therapist or counsellor being vicariously traumatised by what they might hear. It is also invaluable when working therapeutically with people who have suffered persistent physical or sexual abuse, and people with OCD. People suffering from other conditions, such as depression, addictions or uncontrollable anger, may have experienced a traumatic event, which needs to be successfully detraumatised in order for them to move on with their lives. As a result of our training in the rewind technique – which we have been delivering for over 20 years – our graduates have brought relief to literally thousands of people  (eg. case history / PTSD Resolution). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE NOTE This is a powerful technique, which needs to be implemented with care – we recommend you take the time to learn it in person in a small group with a skilled and highly experienced tutor who can guide you through the important steps involved, oversee you as you practise them, answer your questions and give you crucial direct feedback. The version of the rewind technique* you will learn on this course has been refined in line with understandings from neuroscience to make it as safe and reliably effective as possible. The course is taught over two days to ensure you have enough time to thoroughly absorb and practice the steps involved so that you are confident in using it and know how to do so safely and effectively with clients. You will also learn when it is NOT appropriate to use this technique and how to ensure you avoid embedding any trauma further, or making a phobia worse. Guided imagery and visualisation skills form an essential part of the rewind technique, which is why they are a requirement for attending this course. > This has huge potential to change people's lives for the better. I can't wait > to put what I've learnt here to good use > > PSYCHIATRIC SUPPORT WORKER    WHAT WILL YOU LEARN * How to detraumatise people quickly and safely * The necessary skills to treat even severe phobias * Why this version of the rewind technique is so effective, and how it works Under careful guidance from the tutor, you will: * revisit key skills for relaxing clients in order to successfully work using the technique * walk and talk through a step-by-step breakdown of the rewind technique * see a live demonstration of working with a phobia or trauma * practice each stage of the rewind technique in pairs * practice the entire process, with other course participants, under supervision You will also gain: * Vital tools for psycho-education – both adding to your own understanding and to pass on to clients * A clear understanding of the fear response and how PTSD and phobias develop * The detrimental impact traumas and phobias can have on a person’s life * The crucial role of the pattern-matching processes in the brain in triggering phobic responses and post traumatic stress symptoms * How the main treatment techniques for treating post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), sub-threshold trauma and phobias (including EMDR, EFT and CBT) work – their advantages and disadvantages * Why the rewind technique draws on the innate ability we all have to recover from trauma * Pre-disposing factors for suffering a problematic post-traumatic response (or developing a phobia) * Why critical incident debriefing increases the incidence of PTSD * How this version of the rewind technique has been modified to make it safer and more reliable * Trauma-focused rewinding: the psycho-biological reason why this refined rewind technique works so consistently well * A step-by-step breakdown of the essential stages of the rewind technique * The chance to see a live demonstration of working with a phobia or trauma You will leave with: * The confidence to begin using the technique ethically and safely * A clear understanding of the advantages of using a non-intrusive psychological technique to treat trauma, PTSD and phobias (where the client does not have to go into details about or repeatedly ‘revisit’ what has traumatised them) * What to do if a client as an abreaction * Important information about when not to use this technique – and what can be done instead * An understanding of how the rewind technique can be used to work with Complex Trauma and cases involving ‘freeze’, shutdown or dissociative responses * How you can carefully apply this technique to relieve a huge range of anxiety disorders * Greater confidence in dealing with anxiety disorders and distress caused by trauma, phobias and flashbacks * An understanding of how rapidly transformative this technique can be; on the last afternoon we view a filmed therapy session (and follow up) in which Joe Griffin uses the rewind technique to relieve a young man of his severe shark phobia There is also plenty of opportunity for you to ask questions and to experience and practice, under careful guidance, the various stages of the rewind technique yourself. WHO IS THIS COURSE SUITABLE FOR? Anyone working with distressed, phobic or traumatised people, who has already taken our Guided Imagery and Visualisation workshop (and ideally the Therapeutic Power of Language workshop too) as these skills are essential components of the rewind technique. If you help traumatised people (including children) or people suffering from any form of phobia or anxiety disorder – this includes: psychotherapists, counsellors, mental health nurses, OTs, health visitors, social workers, psychiatrists, GPs, clinical psychologists, midwives, welfare officers, youth workers, hypnotherapists and those working with traumatised members of public services, such as: firefighters, police, paramedics and military personnel – you will find the rewind technique and associated skills hugely helpful. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- COURSE REQUIREMENTS Guided imagery, relaxation and visualisation are an integral component of the Rewind Technique – if you don’t already have experience in using these skills therapeutically with others you must complete our Guided Imagery and Visualisation for Therapeutic Change workshop before attending this course (this is always run the day before our rewind technique training). This is to ensure you get the most out of this 2-day course and also have the necessary skills for practising the rewind technique safely and effectively.  You would also find it useful to attend the Therapeutic Power of Language workshop beforehand if you can. All 3 workshops count towards Part 1 of the HG Diploma. Ros Townsend’s live online training Trauma: Patterns of the past is also useful for anyone working with or supporting someone suffering from unresolved trauma, or who would like to understand their own experiences of trauma better. She also runs a workshop on working with Complex Trauma. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *ABOUT THE REWIND TECHNIQUE The Rewind Technique originated from one developed by Richard Bandler, one of the founders of NLP, when it was called the Visual/Kinaesthetic Dissociation protocol.  A variant of this was developed by Dr David Muss, who called it the Rewind Technique. The version of the Rewind Technique you will learn on this 2-day course was refined by Joe Griffin and Ivan Tyrrell, co-founders of the human givens approach, to make it as reliably effective and safe as is possible by aligning the method with their insights into how trauma and phobias are processed in the brain. HG Therapists now follow a specific Rewind Protocol which follows the essential steps of the process that Griffin and Tyrrell set out. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- COURSE FORMAT This intense 2-day training proceeds through a blend of talks, live demonstrations, skill-developing exercises, practice sessions (under careful guidance) and deconstruction of filmed examples of the technique being used, including one with a severely traumatised young woman. There is also plenty of opportunity for networking and discussion during the breaks. The course was previously entitled: The fast phobia and trauma (PTSD) cure – a 2-day workshop in the rewind technique -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This course has been independently accredited by the internationally recognised CPD Standards Office for 12 hours of CPD training. On completion of this training you’ll receive CPD certificates from the College and the CPD Standards Office.

Guided imagery and visualisation for therapeutic change

By Human Givens College

Essential skills for successfully treating a wide range of conditions – such as trauma, addictions, anxiety and depression – as well as making long-lasting behaviour changes and much more… -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Accredited CPD Certificate : 6 hours * Length 1 day (9.30am - 4.00pm) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- > This has been a priceless experience. Life-changing. Brilliant, simply > brilliant! > > COUNSELLOR / EX IT SERVICE MANAGER WHY TAKE THIS COURSE Strong emotions focus and lock attention – keeping people trapped in problem behaviours. Therapeutic change cannot happen until the emotional arousal is reduced. This is why all health and welfare professionals need to know how to induce the relaxation response in their clients. Guided imagery and visualisation not only reduce emotional arousal quickly but can be used to reframe life circumstances through metaphor and to rehearse in the imagination any required changed behaviours and/or feelings, which dramatically increases the likelihood of those changes taking place in ‘real life’. If you want to be able to help people effectively, this is a key course to attend – guided imagery is an essential skill required for removing phobias, curing PTSD, lifting depression and overcoming addictions or self-harm, and is also useful for raising self-confidence and increasing motivation. When you become confident in using these skills, you can begin to bring patients out of the emotionally-driven trance states of a wide range of conditions such as anxiety disorders, addiction, anger, stress overload, trauma, depression, chronic pain [https://www.humangivens.com/college/pain-management/] and much more [https://www.humangivens.com/college/guided-imagery-and-visualisation-workshop/#suitable]. That is why guided imagery is one of the most powerful psychotherapeutic tools available to us – and one you need in your ‘toolkit’. > Fascinating way of working with clients – relaxation techniques very powerful. > Extremely relevant to practice. Good techniques and strategies learnt to use > with clients to help them problem solve and move forward. > > HEALTH VISITOR     WHAT WILL YOU LEARN * Powerful new ways to improve treatment outcomes * Training and practice in using one of the most effective psycho- therapeutic tools available for treating a wide range of emotional and physical conditions * Invaluable ways to motivate people, reframe life circumstances and instigate changes in behaviour * Insight into how the mind/body communication system works * Greater confidence when working with a wide variety of conditions * Supervised practise in generating healing trances * The core skills you need to acquire for the rewind technique [https://www.humangivens.com/college/rewind-technique-training/] for treating PTSD and phobias * A variety of ways to help people relax * Ways to reduce pain, including in childbirth * Increased understanding of trance states and their role in everyday life * Effective skills for helping people improve their performance – sports, public speaking etc. * The opportunity to experience relaxation, guided imagery and visualisation yourself * A scientifically-sound knowledge of why the various techniques and skills you will gain are so valuable * And much more [https://www.humangivens.com/college/guided-imagery-and-visualisation-workshop/#programme] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GOOD TO KNOW The skills you will learn on this course are an essential pre-requisite for taking the The Rewind Technique – Effective treatment for trauma (PTSD) and phobias course. Couples Therapy: Is Narcissism the problem?

By Human Givens College

Additional specialist online training for anyone working with couples or helping with relationship issues… -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Accredited CPD: 4 hours * Length: 8.45am–1.00pm (GMT) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Live training delivered online – Join Jennifer Broadley on Tuesday 9th July 24 for another jam-packed session live online via Zoom. You will have plenty of opportunities to ask questions. Simply book your place and we will send you email confirmation – your Zoom link will be sent the day before the event. BONUS RECORDING – the training is recorded, in case anyone experiences technical difficulties, so you will also get a recording for 2 weeks afterwards to maximise your learning. Can’t make this date, then please register your interest and we’ll let you know as soon as another date is available. This additional online training session gives us time to look in more depth at narcissism and what a relationship with a narcissist might look like In most cases, applying the skills and techniques learned in the Couples Therapy Online Masterclass [https://www.humangivens.com/college/couples-therapy-a-practical-masterclass-live-online-training/] is all that’s needed to help a couple move forward in their relationship. But sometimes additional knowledge is needed, as in the case of relationships where narcissism is a suspected factor, to help a therapist assess more quickly and meaningfully the relationship dynamic and specific challenges involved, thus allowing them to help the couple more effectively to find a constructive and compassionate way forward and out of their current difficulties. WHY TAKE THIS COURSE The term ‘narcissist’ is often bandied about and narcissism is frequently covered in the media – but is this language over-used or misused?  It’s great that awareness is being raised generally about narcissism and the impacts it can have on a relationship, but it’s important to be well informed. As a result of this increased awareness, more people are seeking information and answers to their own experiences, as well as about the causes of their own relationship difficulties and what they can do about them. As part of that process they may well seek some counselling or therapy so it’s important that, as therapists, our knowledge, skillset and stories are as up-to-date and relevant as possible to best serve our clients. If you already work with couples, in your private practice or employed role, and you want some more detailed insight into narcissism and how to spot it, as well as some of the additional relationship challenges it brings, this live online training is for you.. > Jennifer gave a very informative response to my specific request for > information relating to narcissism > > PAULINE, THERAPIST ATTENDING JENNIFER'S 'COUPLES THERAPY' COURSE WHAT WILL YOU LEARN * What is a narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) – and what are the criteria for clinical diagnosis * What specific unkind or manipulative behaviours in relationships can be classed as narcissism – and when should we really not use that term * Why the reports of narcissistic emotional abuse in relationships are significantly on the increase – and how (or whether) this parallels family, relationship and societal changes * If it’s not narcissism, what else could be causing the dysfunctional relationship pattern?  * The truths and myths of the nature vs nurture debate in relation to NPD * How to spot narcissism when both partners are in your therapy room * How to spot NPD when only one partner is in your therapy room * Why it’s usually the co-dependant partner, rather than the one with narcissistic personality traits, that instigates therapy * How to support an abused partner to exit a narcissistic relationship – OR to remain in it if he/she won’t or can’t leave * How to identify which needs are not being met for one or both partners of a couple – and strategies to quickly change that * Tools and checklists to keep your clients emotionally and physically safe as you support a rise in their self-esteem, self-compassion and emotional needs being met more healthily * The common language (media and social media) for NPD-related behaviours * How to raise children (separately or together) when one parent has NPD – the critical Do’s and Don’ts * Additional resources to steer your clients towards – plus recommended reading for you as a therapist * And more… You will also have plenty of opportunities to ask questions and benefit from those asked by other people. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Who is this course suitable for? * Anyone who has previously attended our Couples masterclass 1-day workshop (live or in person). * Anyone working with couples, perhaps as a relationship counsellor or through couples therapy, who would like a better understanding of narcissism and NPD, and ideas for helping couples deal with the challenges these bring. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE NOTE This course is not a substitute for therapy.

The Therapeutic Power of Language

By Human Givens College

– a psychotherapy skills masterclass The language we use has a huge impact on others – on this practical, inspiring course you will learn how to combine solution-focused techniques and effective language skills to help relieve distress and improve outcomes, as quickly as possible… -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Accredited CPD Certificate : 12 hours * * Length 2 days (9:30am - 4:00pm) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Excellent course! I’ve learnt so much and been inspired so much. Gareth has a > wonderful style of delivery... > > MARY FLYNN This course is suitable for anyone working with adults, teens or children – the knowledge and skills you will gain have a wide range of applications in addition to therapy and counselling, including coaching, healthcare, teaching, motivation, overcoming resistance, emotional turmoil and much more. You will leave with a powerful toolkit of precisely-targeted and creative therapeutic language skills, as well as a range of effective brief therapy strategies. These can be easily tailored to any individual and used to successfully help people resolve a wide range of conditions and problems as quickly as possible. If you want to be more effective in what you do, these are core skills to have…   Denise Winn previously taught this course, it is now delivered by Gareth Hughes WHY TAKE THIS COURSE Language is key to everything we do – being aware of the power of language to help or do harm is essential when we’re trying to help people. Knowing how to use it well can make all the difference to a successful therapeutic outcome. Paying attention to the language we use is central to the human givens approach to therapy and counselling: our choice of words is crucial in building rapport with people, learning more about someone – their unique qualities and abilities – in listening and responding, in providing motivation and in collaborating to agree goals and strategies for the effective resolution of their problems. The careful use of language is essential for other areas of life too: at work, home, with family and friends – and this  2-day course is accessible to all. It can be taken as part of the Human Givens Diploma or as a stand-alone course. You will gain a solid foundation in the most effective brief solution-focused strategies and language skills that are essential if you want to be able to help people as quickly as possible. By distilling the essence of proven brief therapy approaches and working in tune with the givens of human nature, outcomes can be dramatically improved and suffering successfully reduced. You will also learn how any team of professional healthcare workers can safely incorporate brief therapy techniques into their work with patients suffering from depression, anxiety, panic attacks, PTSD, anger, OCD, eating disorders, addiction and relationship/marital/family problems, thereby improving outcomes and reducing suffering on an even wider scale. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GOOD TO KNOW This course gives you essential skills that are used in the successful treatment of a wide range of conditions, such as anxiety disorders, depression [https://www.humangivens.com/college/lift-depression/], addictions, self-harm, OCD and the rewind technique [https://www.humangivens.com/college/rewind-technique-training/] for treating trauma and phobias. They are also fundamental skills to have when using guided imagery and visualisation [https://www.humangivens.com/college/guided-imagery-and-visualisation/]. This course is an essential component of Part 1 of the HG Diploma. > I feel very excited and energised. I can't wait to start using these > techniques... > > OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST WHAT WILL YOU LEARN * The essential skills needed for successful brief therapy * New information about the APET™ model – why it is so important to construct therapy that is in tune with our how brains work (our emotional reactions come first) – this speeds up therapy and explains why purely cognitive and behavioural approaches can take so long * An ability to get to the root of the matter quickly by establishing which innate needs are not being met and why (the essence of effective brief therapy) * Quick rapport building skills * How to use the RIGAAR™ structure to improve therapy outcomes * Reflective listening and reflective reframing * How to use therapeutic language skills directly and indirectly to initiate change * Ways to use solution-focused questioning to create a framework for change * How to identify and use your client’s own life resources * An understanding of why the human givens approach dramatically increases the likelihood of therapy being brief, regardless of the presenting problem * A range of psychological interventions to use with common psychiatric problems: anxiety, panic attacks, depression, intrusive thoughts, relationship difficulties and so on * Promoting cooperation by developing realistic and achievable goals * How to identify exceptions (when the problem doesn’t occur) and get the patient to take credit for them * How to generate motivation for change in your patients * Separating the patient’s core identity from their problem * How to minimise or overcome resistance * How not to be drawn in to a client’s negative self-view * Great use of case histories to illustrate the skills covered * How to use the psychological laws of positive expectancy and concentrated attention * An understanding of why taking this collaborative human givens stance, reduces stress and pressure on you * Plenty of opportunity to consolidate what you are learning by practising the skills yourself -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HOW IS THE COURSE STRUCTURED? Held over two consecutive days, this skills-based practical workshop combines a blend of talks, demonstrations and exercises.  Each day starts at 9.30pm and finishes at 4.00pm, with 2 breaks for networking and refreshment and 45 minutes for lunch. Course notes, refreshments and lunch are included on both days. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WHO IS THIS COURSE SUITABLE FOR? You and your patients will benefit enormously from you attending these two days. If you are a counsellor, psychotherapist, clinical psychologist, mental health nurse, GP, doctor, nurse, OT, physiotherapist, youth worker, social worker, health visitor, support worker or any other caring professional, and wish to be more effective in what you do, this course gives you the perfect opportunity to discover new, subtle but highly effective skills with plenty of time to practise to help you assimilate them into your own work. Many other professions – such as educational and business professionals – also find the skills and information covered highly applicable to and beneficial for their own work. It is also suitable for anyone who is thinking of a career in this field as these are core skills needed for successful brief, solution-focused psychotherapy. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This course has been independently accredited by the internationally recognised CPD Standards Office for 12 hours of CPD training. On completion of this training you’ll receive CPD certificates from the College and the CPD Standards Office.

How to tell stories that heal

By Human Givens College

Stories and metaphor are a powerful way to stimulate hope and by-pass resistance – they can also enhance problem solving and creativity, beneficially impact the mind/body system and much more… -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Accredited CPD Certificate : 6 hours * Length 1 day (9.30am - 4.00pm) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Wonderful – inspiring, informative and empowering communication skills > masterclass > > JENI NELSON, PSYCHOTHERAPIST / HYPNOTHERAPIST WHY TAKE THIS COURSE Stories can be incredibly powerful therapeutic tools. They help bypass rigid views about life, enhancing the listener’s flexibility of thought. And by suspending ordinary constraints, they help people reclaim optimism whilst fueling their imaginations with the energy necessary to attain goals. In the physically ill, they can also stimulate the immune system and speed recovery. All successful psychotherapy and counselling involves storytelling and the use of pertinent metaphors, both of which tap into the natural way our brains work. We can’t know what goes on in another person’s mind but, if you perceive the ‘pattern’ of a story and understand that it could be useful to them at a specific point in their life, that is reason enough to tell it. Their unconscious, creative imagination will seek and find the ‘meaning’ relevant to their situation. No explanation, no direct statement of a story’s meaning can substitute for the way it acts on the hearer’s mind. Complex Trauma: how to work effectively with challenging cases

By Human Givens College

This practical workshop covers the unique challenges of working with complex trauma cases and gives you clear guidance on the most effective ways to help -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * * Accredited CPD: 6 hours * Length: 1 day (9.30am - 4.00pm) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Absolutely jam-packed with techniques/information and resources. Ros is > superlative. A calm, confident and articulate trainer... > > J YAP, THERAPIST WHY TAKE THIS COURSE Clients suffering from Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) or who have experienced trauma in a shutdown or dissociative state, can present unique challenges to practitioners working with them – but with the right knowledge and skills we can help sufferers move forward in their lives. In this hands-on, experiential workshop you will learn more about what makes trauma ‘complex’, why shutdown or dissociation are often experienced by sufferers, and how to best work with such presentations using the Human Givens framework of understanding. You will also have the chance to collaborate with other experienced practitioners and clinicians during exercises designed to further your understanding, add to your existing skillsets, and bring wider context to an often-misunderstood area of work. During this intensive day of live, in-person training, experienced psychotherapist Ros Townsend will introduce you to a framework within which you can set your understanding of complex trauma presentations and discover the opportunities that we have to help clients move forward from their difficulties. You will learn more about the neurobiology of the automatic survival options that we have available to us, especially dissociative and ‘shutdown’ states, and leave with an understanding of how to use this knowledge to inform your work, giving you greater confidence to work creatively and flexibly with such presentations. From understanding the symptoms that are now recognised as distinguishing C-PTSD, to adapting existing HG techniques and strategies and introducing new tools and skills, this course will explore how we, as clinicians, can approach such complex presentations without getting lost in the complexity ourselves. Using case histories and discussion you will have the chance to understand more about the unique challenges that such work presents and to leave feeling more confident in your ability as a therapist to work effectively and contextually with these. > Such a thought-provoking and informative day. Complex PTSD is a real buzz word > at present, this took the mystery out of it in a clear and understandable way > – highly recommend... > > MELISSA DERRICOURT     WHAT WILL YOU LEARN * What Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) is * What other symptoms a client may present with in addition to those meeting the criteria for ‘classic’ PTSD * How to effectively work with these within the Human Givens framework of understanding * Vital tools for psycho-education – both adding to your own understanding and to pass on to clients * Why individuals enter into a dissociative or ‘shutdown’ state * The difference between ‘freeze’ and ‘shutdown’ * Why anger can present when an individual comes out of a ‘shutdown’ state * How to help a client deal effectively with anger if it does arise * The crucial role of the pattern-matching processes in the brain in post-traumatic stress symptoms – and how the kinds of templates stored can subtly differ in more complex trauma * How to adapt existing techniques – such as rewind and deconditioning molar memories – to work creatively with such presentations * The Dos and Don’ts when working with Guided Imagery in complex presentations * How to refine your Guided Imagery skillset to powerfully benefit clients who have experienced trauma in a shutdown state * Why any work that we do must be informed by the innate ability we all have to recover from trauma * How to avoid negatively reframing trauma and making symptoms worse * The most effective ways to help clients towards recovery and post-traumatic growth Under careful guidance from the tutor, you will: * Explore and discuss the different survival options available to us as humans in traumatic situations * Learn more about the neurobiology of these states – including our passive survival responses * Develop a new framework of understanding within which to set your work with all kinds of trauma * Understand more about why ‘shutdown’ or ‘dissociation’ are often associated with complex presentations * Understand why addictions and self-harming behaviours are often a part of the picture * Work collaboratively with peers and colleagues to extend and develop your own skillsets and knowledge * Explore how guided imagery can be adapted and used to most powerfully benefit clients suffering in this way You will leave with: * The confidence to work creatively and flexibly with a wider range of presentations * A clear understanding of a framework within which you can work and continue to develop and adapt your tools and skillsets * An appreciation of the importance of taking your time with such work and proceeding at a pace right for each individual client * An understanding of how to support clients in moving forward from the use of faulty coping strategies – such as addiction and self-harm * Greater confidence in creating metaphors that work powerfully for clients * An understanding of how helping a client to meet their emotional needs is particularly key to recovery in the most complex cases Throughout the day there will be plenty of opportunity for you to ask questions and to engage in collaborative work and discussion with the tutor and with experienced colleagues and practitioners. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IMPORTANT NOTE Working with Complex PTSD requires specific skills and experience and thus is only suitable for practitioners either already working in this area and looking to extend their skillset or those who are already practicing as therapists and wish to begin working in this area. If you are an experienced practitioner from another modality, we recommend you familiarise yourself a little with the HG approach before you attend, see: About HG therapy [https://www.humangivens.com/human-givens/human-givens-therapy/hg-approach-difference/], benefits of the approach [https://www.humangivens.com/college/about-the-college/benefits-of-human-givens-approach/], and what is RIGAAR [https://www.humangivens.com/2021/11/25/why-human-givens-practitioners-use-rigaar/].
