A hands-on introduction to various AAC devices for anyone with a personal or professional interest. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This day introduces you to EATS and is a good foundation in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). You will learn different terminology used in the specialism; the difference between complexity of devices; key concepts related to implementing and making AAC work; how and when to refer to the specialist service and other essential knowledge needed to work in this area. The session is a good mix of theory and practical activities, and the day concludes with a generous interactive session for all to have a chance to have hands on experience with many devices and communication tools. The course is for anyone who wants information about AAC, whether you are a client, family member, paid carer, teacher, Speech & Language Therapist, other Allied Health Professional or anyone else who has an interest. Defibshop was born in 2005. At this point people really did not know what a defibrillator was, despite it being common place in countries like America. If it was going to happen here in the UK we’d need to educate people about what an AED was, when they should be used, how important they were in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest, the impact of using one to the casualty and how easy they are to use whether you are trained or not. For many years it has been an uphill struggle to educate people about defibrillators. Common objections include “Is it law to have one?” and “we’ve never needed one so far so why should I buy one?”, but, after years of education in the importance of early CPR and defibrillation in the event of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), some changes in legislation, high profile incidents and saves by defibs such as Fabrice Muamba in 2012 and Christian Erikson in 2021, as well as the introduction of defibrillator training within workplace first aid courses, these units are now a natural extension of first aid provision. Today we have a highly knowledgeable team working to ensure the correct defibrillator is placed in the correct environment. All defibs deliver a shock of course, but it is important to take the environment into account as models vary and offer different functions. We have also been working with the British Heart Foundation to promote The Circuit, the UK’s national defibrillator network that is linked directly to the 999 ambulance response service and enables the operator to send a caller to the nearest available registered defibrillator, so potentially saving valuable minutes and saving more lives. Please register your unit if you have not done so already. We continue to put pressure on the Government to pass the proposed Automated External Defibrillator Public Access Bill to legislate defibrillators that are accessible to all in public places. Without this, people are going to continue to die from sudden cardiac arrest because there wasn’t a unit close enough to hand. That could happen to any one of us. After you've purchased your life-saving AED, our commitment doesn't end there. As part of our FREE pad and battery reminder service, we will contact you when your consumables are due to expire, so you have plenty of time to replace them and ensure your device is always ready for use.

Having seen the benefits of first aid training, in giving individuals the knowledge and confidence to help in an emergency, I think it's important that as many of us as possible gain these skills. My career as a nurse in both hospitals and schools has given me both the knowledge and practical experience to deliver first aid training in a way that is effective, practical and fun. Career I have worked in busy hospital environments across many areas, including Accident and Emergency, Intensive Care, High Dependency and on a variety of wards. It's certainly been an interesting and challenging career, working alongside many dedicated and skilled colleagues. I started teaching first aid in a school setting, delivering courses to various staff members, from maintenance teams to headteachers. It was through this that I realised how important it was to make training practical and fun in order to engage trainees and build their confidence. Having a degree in psychology is highly useful when it comes to delivering our Mental Health First Aid courses. I am passionate about using my skills and knowledge to make first aid accessible to everyone, so that as individuals we can ‘make a difference’ when it matters most. Aileen Sherer - First Aid Trainer Aileen Sherer Regardless of age, ‘Train For Life’ is the mindset I want to instil in all my first aid students. I believe that having the knowledge, practical skills & confidence to deal with any emergency first aid situation, will result in successful outcomes in the workplace, at home or in the community. My passion is to make training fun, enjoyable and build confidence. Removing the fear of “what if I do something wrong” or “I don’t know what to do”, by teaching adults and children essential knowledge & skills, is extremely rewarding. Career I am a highly experienced Customer Services Professional, specialising in First Aid training and staff development. Throughout my long career, in both nursing and as a Senior Cabin Crew Member for a major airline, I have been involved in training and coaching; helping my colleagues to reach their full potential within the workplace. I have also worked in many other environments delivering Nursing care & First Aid. I've recently completed my own Level 3, Ofqual regulated Community First Responder Course with the West Midlands Ambulance Service, and am now an active volunteer within my local community, delivering first line treatment for 999 'life threatening' calls, prior to the 'calvary' (paramedics) arriving. Its an amazing feeling to be giving something back to the community, and helping my neighbours where I live and in the surrounding villages.
