Kick start your career in the building industryI have been working in the wider timber processing-building products industry for over 20 years.  With a background in operations, human resources and health and safety management roles I have a good overview and understanding of the barriers that can hinder a person’s ability to enter or remain within the industry. Not everyone has the same opportunities or ability to forge a prosperous future for themselves or their families. The Building Futures programme is a purposeful way for me to contribute to the wellbeing and enduring lifestyles of rangitahi here in the Hawkes Bay community.  Helping someone to secure a job within this industry is satisfying and rewarding.  Knowing that could have a positive impact on their future, makes it priceless. I am a wife, mother, and grandmother so I have amassed a wealth of experience in life and many of its stresses.  I don’t believe I have all the answers, but I have learned that having listening ears is invaluable and sometimes a hug goes a long way towards making things better. Discovery STEM Education is a not for profit organisation with a STEM Centre at Kelham Island Museum and a STEM Academy at Sheffield College. Working in partnership with leading STEM organisations from across the globe, we have developed Invent Future Global and World Educational Robotics UK. We are an international hub of interaction between schools, colleges, university departments, STEM organisations and current technology industry. Discovery STEM Education is a member of a UK Robotics and Autonomous Systems Education and Skills Task Group which has been awarded EPSRC funding to develop robotics and autonomous systems education in the UK. Working in collaboration with Abilix UK, Consequential Robotics and The University of Sheffield, we have developed educational robotics curriculum and supported more than 200 schools to incorporate robotics into their existing curriculum. A major focus of our STEM career building strategy is to develop opportunities for young people to collaborate and problem solve with children from across the globe. Since July 2018 we have organised three international robotics events at Sheffield University for schools from the UK, Mexico and China with support from Rolls-Royce UK, Sheffield robotics and the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre. We also organise onsite and online international robotics and invention conferences for young people from multiple countries.
