Music theory is the understanding of how music works. It's knowing why certain. music makes you feel happy, or why the soundtrack in action films makes the visuals so much more exciting. It's also an integral part of any music student's learning journey. For years it's been packaged as a boring set of rules which must be learned simply to pass an exam, but we aim to change this. Most music students will already have some knowledge of music theory, so each of our students receive a unique course plan which only covers topics they haven't already learned. On top of this, every student is paired with their own personal music theory tutor who supports their learning throughout their time on the course. More than a memory test Our aim is to teach our students to understand the logic and process behind every topic, rather than simply memorise lots of data to pass an exam. We know that the more deeply something is understood, the less likely it is to be forgotten.  Regular feedback to keep you on track Even with the best intentions, buying workbooks and downloading worksheets can't guarantee that the work will get done. As soon as we know what your goal is, we aim to help you get there in the most efficient time possible. Your tutor will set you work for each week and we will send you reminders when work is due.  Less pressure on instrumental teachers As a lot of our tutors are also instrumental music teachers, we know how hard it can be to fit music theory into a flute/trumpet/violin lesson, and we think that your instrumental teacher should be able to give their full attention to helping you improve on your chosen instrument. Get your money's worth from your instrumental lessons, whilst we get you through your theory exam.

Somerton

My name is Cameron and I am a 27 year old keys player specialising in Rock, Blues, R&B, Funk and Soul music. I started playing the piano aged 8 and have been passionate about music ever since. I have many years’ experience providing piano lessons to people of all ages and abilities, in person, in schools and online. Companies I've previously worked for include Open2Music and Private Music Lessons UK. I can also teach students Classical and advanced music theory to a high standard. I produce many of my own documents to aid students’ learning and use methodical but fun teaching methods. With a diverse knowledge of subjects such as music culture/history and technology, I aim to give students a broad overview of all things music related. Education: After working through the ABRSM Classical and Jazz grades, I began studying Music and Music Tech A levels at college. From 2014 to 2016, I was tutored by highly regarded industry professionals such as Brian Henry (Soul II Soul, Mica Paris) and Frank Tontoh (Amy Winehouse, George Michael) at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford, where I achieved a 2:1 in Professional Music Performance. Experience: I have a wealth of experience teaching the piano (and music in general) to children and adults of all ages and abilities, either at home, in a school environment, or online. Resources: I have created many useful documents over the years, catering to people of all ages and abilities. I also produced a single document called 'Essential Music Theory' featuring lots of information about scales, chords, progressions, melodic features, improvisation and ear training. Teaching online: Online tuition is useful as it is convenient for both the student and the teacher, especially when they are many miles away from each other. I have taught many students via Zoom and find it to be a useful and enjoyable experience. I have access to a reliable, fast internet connection and know how to deal with any issues that may arise. I can play the piano in software like Logic Pro X and this can be heard very clearly by the student on the other end (any audio I play my end can be heard). Students can also see what notes/chords I'm playing via screen-sharing and an app called 'ChordieApp'.

Young Musicians Over 5,000 young musicians are regularly involved in our North Tyneside based hub events each year, and we also provide further opportunities for our young people to engage in other regional and national events with the support of our broad network of partners. Music Centre NTMEH Music Centre provides over 300 young people with the weekly opportunity to attend a wide range of bands, orchestras, choirs and a music theory group. All of these activities are free of charge. We also facilitate the Youth Music funded Standing Upright project, which provides access to musical opportunities for disadvantaged young people from across the borough, offering them the opportunity to work towards Arts Award qualifications and to train to become a NTMEH Young Leader. NTMEH is always keen to hear from you! Our music hub strives to offer as broad a range of opportunities as possible so that we can meet the musical needs of all young people in our borough. Please do get in touch for further information, or to find out more about working with us.
