4 weeks- Intermediate pet obedience and manners

By Jo Pick

Open to anyone who has been to me for training, either 4 week basic course or the loose lead & recall workshops and understand how I encourage you to communicate with your dogs. We will continue to build on the basics - lead work around distractions, walking to heel off lead, recall, sit stay, impulse control, and manners around other dogs at a distance. Practising 'leave it' and 'drop' at a distance and going on group walks. If you have attended an introductory class with me, or your dog already has basic manners and you are ready to continue practising, this is the course for you

4 weeks Basics/Beginners Course

By Jo Pick

We will discuss and practise basic manners and behaviours and how to attain those through primarily reward-based training, the timing and types of rewards, and setting boundaries using distraction, redirection and appropriate correction for unwanted behaviours. The behaviours we will primarily cover will be; • Loose lead walking, including desensitisation to exciting triggers such as other dogs • Recall - ensure this is a positive, fun behaviour, for both you and your dog, and to ensure your dog doesn't learn to ignore your recall. • Sit, stay and wait • Impulse control games. We will also discuss and practice, where possible, manners and long-term aims for a well-mannered family dog, such as meeting strangers and other dogs, visitors to the home and unwanted barking or nervousness. Other issues as needed by individuals that arise in the group discussions

RACISM – ACKNOWLEDGING AND UNDERSTANDING

By Inclusive Solutions

In this course we deepen participants understanding of systemic racism and the spectrum of privilege. It challenges the participants to examine their behaviours and take close looks at some of the views they have held since a very young age, e.g. this area is a “bad” area, because it has a high proportion of black/brown people living in it, or that young black men in tracksuits are “thugs”. We think about where these messages come from and how people are indoctrinated by the media. COURSE CATEGORY Inclusion Team Building Leadership Emotional needs DESCRIPTION In this course we deepen participants understanding of systemic racism and the spectrum of privilege. We explore the reasons why white people are so defensive when it comes to talking about race. We discuss having racial biases and the implications of them, such as unconsciously insulting people around us in the workplace. When we become aware of how our behaviours can affect people, we then look for solutions.  The course is designed for groups of professionals to come together as a team to try and take responsibility for the racism that goes on in their workplace – empowering the leadership to have difficult conversations with team members and create a paradigm shift across the entire organisation.  Please come with an open mind, and you might be surprised at what you find out. We are striving for a world where racism is an open conversation and not a topic that we shy away from.  TESTIMONIALS “That was a really insightful session and thought provoking. I would love to attend more sessions on racism. Thank you for the engaging questions and delivery” “Lots of things to reflect on!” LEARNING OBJECTIVES Participants will: 1. 1. Confront their own racism and unconscious biases  2. Become aware of the ways they treat people differently based on race  3. Think about practical changes they can make in their workplaces  WHO IS IT FOR? * Leadership teams seeking guidance and reflection  * Educators who want to get it right  * People who have had not had much contact with people outside their own race * People who believe they are “not racist”  COURSE CONTENT * Background – brief history of systemic racism  * Racism as a binary – the problem with thinking only “bad” people can be racist  * Trust – how do we feel around people we don’t trust?   * Difference – how do we act when we feel different?  * What do Good Manners look like around people of different cultures?  * What does Good Allyship look like in the workplace?  * Why don’t we talk about race?  * What does your race mean to you?  * Examining our privilege – activity  * Interracial friendship video * Visioning – what does the ideal workplace look like?  * Setting Actions – what achievable actions can we set to bring us closer to our dream future?

1-to-1 training - an initial consult and first lesson

By Jo Pick

In private individual lessons, I aim to demonstrate, and help you learn, that we can communicate effectively with our dogs during our daily lives. For dogs we primarily do this with reward-based training and the use of resources and consequences of actions, for both the dog and yourself. We will also discover that it is ok to ask the dog not to do certain things, but in a non-aggressive way, to help the dogs understand what we don’t consider acceptable. We will further find that we can either encourage or suppress certain behaviours with positive and negative reinforcement and affirmatively communicate with dogs. The initial 1-hour consultation and lesson will usually occur at my premises near Lumphanan, so we can discuss and practice in a neutral, controlled environment. During this session I take the time to understand you, your dog and your needs. I also conduct training and address any behavioural issues. We often solve many of the common problems in this initial session. If needed, subsequent training can take place at my premises or a location that suits the issues - such as your home or a public place. The types of issues that I commonly help with are; Pulling on the lead Reactive behaviour when walking your dog on a lead - either over excitement or fear aggression Dog recall issues. Jumping up and bad manners with visitors and family members Excessive barking. Toilet training problems. Excessive 'mouthing' or biting. Stealing food or other objects. Anything else!
