The Primrose School of Dance was established by Kimber Benton in 2010 with a simple mission in mind – to take fine arts to children in the community. As the name suggests, we teach pupils how to dance. But for us, it’s much, much more than that. It’s about giving young people an introduction to the beauty of dance and open conversations through art. It’s about inspiring them, giving them confidence, creating a structure through which they can thrive, and at the end of the course a spotlight under which they can shine. We believe what we deliver is important. That’s why we care about how we deliver it. Our ethos is shared by all of our engaged and energetic instructors. They’re all experienced – with at least two years’ dance teaching and a degree or equivalent dance teaching experience – and passionate about giving youngsters the opportunity to bloom. They’re all trained to teach to the Primrose School of Dance guidelines, ensuring quality and continuity across our service, and follow accredited dance syllabus guidelines when delivering classes. Born in London, Sally has lived in Dorking and district all her adult life and is proud and grateful to be an active part of the Dorking community scene. A secondary school teacher for most of that time (with the odd year out trying to escape) she is keenly aware of the increasing need for earlier intervention for young people facing mental health challenges. She has always been a strong advocate of creating resilience in young people through the PSHE programmes in schools. Sally practices mindfulness as part of her coping mechanism for periodic bouts of depression. She has a Stress and Health Management Diploma, a PARKES Inner Child Therapy qualification and is also an NLP master practitioner. Having raised two children herself Sally would love to see a space created locally where young people could feel safe sharing their worries and fears before they become debilitating.

I loved every minute of the weekend I spent on Liz's retreat. A beautiful place, instantly welcoming, a perfectly judged mix of yoga and down time (in which I managed to fit in a facial, a sound bath and a nap!), delicious, thoughtful food. I went on my own and left feeling so lucky to have spent time amongst such a range of fantastic group of women. Liz is a brilliant yoga teacher who encouraged us all to try new things, anticipated challenges and offered alternatives, helped me connect my breathing with movements and really take myself out of my head... But beyond that she, and the team she bought together for the retreat, have the most beautiful vibe - full of sunshine and fun and love and way of creating an incredibly nurturing atmosphere that is also genuinely joyful. Not surprisingly, I've signed up for the next one!

Beach South Volleyball Club focuses on beach volleyball training, and was started in the spring of 2012. The team had one coach and a handful of athletes. By the end of the season we had 20 athletes and had added a few great coaches. Beach South Volleyball History This club was started for several reasons. The main reason was born out of a love, Director, Scott Castevens had for the game. He wanted to see the game and beach volleyball training grow in the southeast, North Carolina specifically. At the time, Scott believed the beach volleyball training on sand would strengthen the Piedmont indoor volleyball program. He was a coach at Piedmont indoor. It would create and develop better all-around players who are not just good at one position/area. They would be able to pass, set, block, hit and serve effectively. Beach South Volleyball Recent Accomplishments In the spring of 2013 Beach South Volleyball Club had more than 100 athletes participating throughout the spring/summer. In 2014, we launched our College Development Program (CDP) which is a year round program designed for the athlete focused primarily on beach volleyball training and committed to the amount of training required to be in this program. This program has grown into multiple levels and has yielded many athletes who have gone on to play at the collegiate level. Over the past 7 years 100% of our graduating seniors have gone on to play at the collegiate level, most of them Division 1. In 2020 we had 12 Seniors, 11 going on to play at NCAA Division 1 programs and one going to play at a Division II program. Out of those 12, we had one player who went to the #1 team in the country at that time and 3 others who went to top 10 programs in the country. We are excited to continue to see athletes getting to continue what they love doing at the collegiate level and watching this sport grow. Through yoga and mindfulness, I help people to slow down, prioritise their wellbeing and feel more peace day to day. I’ll let you into a secret though… the old me was not a calm, happy, chilled out yoga teacher! The old me worked long hours in jobs I didn’t enjoy, feeling constantly stressed and overwhelmed. I said yes to everything and put way too much pressure on myself. Life felt busy, I wasn’t happy and my mental health started to suffer too. It was at this point I realised something had to give. So I left my job at the time, took a step back and dived into all things health and wellbeing. Little did I know, three things would change my whole way of living. First, I found yoga. What started as 30 days of Yoga with Adriene on YouTube (highly recommend!) turned into a regular practice, and I realised how amazing it felt to properly slow down and take care of my mind and body in this way. Yoga has made me stronger, happier and more myself. It’s given me a way to find peace amidst the busyness of life. As I learnt more about yoga, I started practicing meditation regularly, and found that it gave me an even deeper sense of calm and mental clarity. Meditation has taught me how to become present and cultivate a calmer, clearer mindset, and it’s become a daily practice that I now couldn’t do without. I love to share this with others by starting every yoga class with some meditation. And last but not least, I discovered mindfulness. This is perhaps the most valuable practice I’ve ever learnt, and weaving it into my daily life has had such an impact on how I feel and experience the world around me. Mindfulness has helped me to appreciate my life more fully and find a balance between doing and being. This is something I want everyone to experience, so I now use my classes, workshops and other offerings to spread mindfulness more widely. Movement. Meditation. Mindfulness. These practices have become the three M’s I live by. They’ve improved my life more than I can say and now everything I do is about sharing them with others. WE TEACH. Since January 2014, ReadAble has been running weekly reading and language arts classes for children ages 2 to 15 in a neighbourhood in the Chin Swee area. We started out teaching in children’s homes, but have grown to occupy classrooms in the Residents’ Committee Centre. We teach a phonics-based curriculum to our earliest readers and deliver a programme which complements the primary school syllabus for those who have mastered the basics of reading. We use drama, movement and play to draw out a love for reading, build self-confidence, and encourage creativity. WE BUILD. ReadAble has built a community library of over a thousand books for our kids to freely access books at every reading level throughout the week. We also organise educational excursions to plays and museums, as well as connect kids’ families with community resources, such as school supply donations and workshops by professional educators. Through our BookDrop project, we set up conducive study spaces and mini-libraries in kids’ homes. WE MENTOR. Apart from our classes every Saturday, some volunteers run one-on-one classes with children in their homes across the week forming deep relationships with families. We also started a class teaching the predominantly migrant mothers of our students, functional English to navigate life in Singapore. EVERY CHILD LOVED. We believe that children thrive in love. We are committed to forming lasting relationships with them as teachers and mentors. Each child’s progress is closely monitored and classes are tailored to meet their learning styles. We recognise that our children weather challenges such as parental incarceration or family violence, and we strive to support them. EVERY FAMILY PARTNERED. Family support is crucial to a child’s success. We work alongside families to reinforce children's learning at home. We seek to understand our children’s home life and we engage parents with routine updates on their children’s progress. EVERY VOLUNTEER EMPOWERED. ReadAble is entirely volunteer-led and run, and we are serious about equipping our people. We run regular training sessions on topics from phonics to classroom management and how toxic stress affects child development. We constantly refine our methods based on research and best practices. EVERYONE A COMMUNITY. We seek to build an inclusive community that encourages children's diverse aspirations and engages everyone with empathy. We have a flat volunteer structure led by our Co-founders and Core Team who form friendships with children and their families. Together, we work to eradicate social inequality.

I live and work in Solihull and am married with two boys. I have an obsessive love of sewing, which has driven my career through a wide range of sewing related experiences. I came from a family of sewers and from a very early age was encouraged to be creative. My love of embroidery and needlework led me to pursue a career in teaching. I attended a specialist needlework and home economics teacher training College in Liverpool. I always enjoyed "hands on work" and gained experience working with an expert team of fitting and alteration seamstresses at an exclusive dress shop the summer I finished at Liverpool. I wanted a creative career, so I applied for the position of wardrobe assistant at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. This was a wonderful work experience, sewing fabulous fabrics and making a diverse range of costumes. The theatre wardrobe mistress encouraged me to continue studying and I enrolled for a City and Guilds course. Although theatre working hours were long, they were flexible and I could study and work full time. I achieved merit for City and Guilds Creative Studies; two years later I received a distinction in Fashion and Design and won the year prize. My qualifications and experience opened another career opportunity in the fashion industry. I wanted to work fewer hours and the job I was offered provided training in production planning and buying. Working regular hours I decided to think again about the teaching career I had abandoned. I was employed by Birmingham Adult Education Department to work in evenings teaching Embroidery and Needlework. I thoroughly enjoyed teaching, so when I married and the family arrived I gave up full time work in industry. I returned to college, updated my teaching qualifications and became a part time teacher In the early 90's I wrote the Tailoring Programme for the West Midlands Access Foundation, later used by Open College Network. By 1996 I was determined to offer my own courses, now known as Gill Arnold Dressmaking Training. In 1997 I became Sewing World magazine's pattern specialist. Over 20 years teaching has given me a wealth of experience and knowledge to produce articles on patterns and fitting. I have also written for Sew Today and American publications. With the support of the sewing industry I enjoy being a regular exhibitor at shows all over the country including the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham. My yearly programme provides a full range of sewing events, exhibitions, seminars, cloth sales, trips and courses.
