Located 2 miles from Central Edinburgh in the neighbourhood of Gorgie, the site was a waste depot until the 1930s. Horse-drawn refuse carts would deposit their loads from the wagons to train cars. The same railway still passes to the west of the farm today. The site was later used for civil defence training during the war. It later became derelict and disused, owned by the local authority for many years to come.

I describe myself as a maker of ceramic, but this title does not really cover everything that I do. Clay has its limitations and to fulfil the completion of a design I often have to explore other techniques and materials, resulting in mixed media pieces. I love these combinations ... ceramic and metal ... ceramic and wood ... ceramic and glass, but there is always the element of clay and this material will, more often than not, be the foundation of a piece of work. The manipulation of clay in the hand and its response is always an exciting experience, the way it can take any form or texture you chose to express - it is like no other material.

Simon is originally from Buckinghamshire, England. I am from Connecticut and moved to England in 2001 with my daughter. We are very lucky to have five grandchildren, who live in England. Simon and I had a life changing opportunity to relocate to Ireland, so we didn’t hesitate. We wasted no time and packed up our home and our alpaca herd and moved to County Kerry in the Southern part of the country. Moving here was certainly not without a few bumps along the way, but we are very settled and incredibly happy. We challenge anyone to visit Ireland and not fall in love with the people and the amazing rugged landscape. Ireland is a truly special place.

My love of horticulture grew after starting an allotment 6 years ago at the school where I used to teach. I have always enjoyed nature and wildlife, but wanted to explore the possibilities that learning outdoors could have. After teaching in the classroom for 14 years (at that point) I had no idea of the impact gardening would have on my students. It has been simply magical to watch. I have witnessed first hand the positive impact nurturing a garden can have, and not just on a personal level! Everyone should garden - it is SO good for you! Gardening after a day in work was simply not enough, so three years ago I enrolled on a horticultural course with the Royal Horticultural Society at Ness Gardens, I have taken floral design classes and I'm using my teaching skills to hold workshops so that others can enjoy plants and flowers regardless of whether they have a garden or not. An opportunity arose to hold my own planting workshops at Make in Liverpool and an idea for Emma's Wild Garden grew from there, I finally had a creative outlet for my plant passion and I could share it with others. As well as providing workshops, I have been creating my own terrariums as gifts and then to sell. Gardening doesn't have to involve wearing wellies - although I love my bumblebee pair - it can be done whatever the weather and using beautiful glassware and stylish planters for any room in your home.

BORN TO SWIM is a small swimming school established for 16 years. We have taught thousands of babies and children throughout the London area with amazing results. As we like to say, we teach from crib to competition. We are passionate about what we do and as well as teaching we wish to inspire our swimmers. From our baby and toddler classes, to our children’s lessons and our bespoke one-to-one sessions you can see the differences between BORN TO SWIM members to babies and children taught elsewhere. We have little ones as young as 3 years old swimming 10 metres. Okay, it may not be the national recognised stroke at this point, but it is definitely not doggy paddle. We NEVER ever teach doggy paddle or use armbands. Our teachers are enthusiastic about our approach and are all trained in the BORN TO SWIM building block methodology. They love what they do.
