WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
Bondaweb on a roll: This is the primary material you will be using.
Fabric ground: A plain fabric base, this can be cotton or polyester (scrap fabrics for the patchwork design)
Haberdashery: Scrap fabrics and a variety of threads. Gather beads, sequins, ribbons, yarns, or any other embellishments you want to incorporate into your artwork
Iron and board: To fuse the fabric layers together, no steam. Iron should be on its hottest temperature.
Hand sewing needle and thread & hand embroidery needle and thread.
Fabric scissors.
Acrylic paint: very small amount (2 colours) & paintbrush.
Baking parchment (greaseproof paper) to protect your iron

They are however fun and you get to ask questions to Nicola and connect with other like minded attendees. The LIVE sessions are all recorded and uploaded to use as reference or to watch back, so don't worry if you can't make any of them. 



Join Nicola Perren of Perren Studios for a new set of classes in the Drawing for Textiles series. The 2nd of the series will see us explore and expand our resources in a fun, creative drive to engage with drawing for textiles as part of the design process. 
You do not need to have completed the 1st in the series to join in. You will select a subject matter of your own choosing and we will move off the flat surface of the page to create our own 3d artefacts. These can be used as elements to explore later on paper but more often emerge as observational drawings in themselves.

 



COURSE OVERVIEW:
We often find ourselves drawn to familiar subject matters and as a result, outcomes can start to become predictable. This course will see us not only making our own resources but also consider the act of making 3d resources as a drawing and observational process in itself. We will explore the abstraction of self-selected subject matters in a way that is mindful of a textile practice in order that we can promote outcomes that are unexpected, engaging and playful.



WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR:
This course is suitable for anyone, from those new to textiles, through to experienced makers who want to explore or refresh ways of thinking. You may be a teacher or lecturer looking to recharge your creative batteries, a student who wants to further your current knowledge, or maybe outside of formal education and fancy trying something outside of your usual remit.
You may have already completed series one, if so, it is great to have you back on board but equally, this course can be completed without having done the previous one.



WHAT TO EXPECT:
The focus of this course will be on the creation of 3d artefacts that will be inspired by our own visual references i.e., drawings, photographs, objects. With a playful and experimental approach, we will consider form, scale, texture and line in the development of artefacts made from both soft and hard materials.
Making textiles, is so often about working ‘in space’, whether it is crochet, loom weaving, machine embroidery, tufting or even print making. When we draw on paper in more traditional ways, we can often cut straight to final designs and avoid the expressive, fun and trials that can emerge through drawing. By exploring drawing as a 3d mode, can engage with the more unusual and allow us to explore material properties, movement and the special qualities so often linked to textiles themselves.

 



WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
This course does make use of a wide range of materials and tools, as with all my teaching, I offer alternatives to what I am doing in the class. You can do this course often with items you may already have around the house / in the garage but equally, you can by items specifically for the course.

PROGRAMME:
Once you have signed up to the full course, you will have access to a full materials list and a video to help you prepare before you join a session, this will include an approach to starting the project i.e., gathering visual references, creating some initial observational drawings [you may already have a project in the past you want to revisit or, want to start with something new]. In Series One, we worked with a particular colour story, for this series of classes, it is up to you if you want to use a colour story I provide, create your own or, like me keep colour simple and work with a monotone approach.
PRE-COURSE MATERIALS:
A] Pre-session planning. This video should be watched before you start the course to help you prepare and gather the things you will need. 
SERIES PROGRAMME:
Session 1] Drawing to Build.
Starting out drawing as form, we will then move on to lift the line off the page and into 3d. Twisting, binding, wrapping, folding and adapting will be key.
Session 2] Organic and Pliable.
Working with malleable materials, we will explore textural qualities and consider the potential of multiples.
Session 3] Geometric Structures.
Being mindful of edges, negative space and construction, we will explore our source subject with relatively hard materials.
Session 4] Soft Form Stitch.
Working with textiles as a material, we will explore the potential of stuffed forms stitch as a drawn observation.
Session 5] Drawing our Artefacts.
Observation and dramatic approaches are used to view, understand and explore our new library of visual resources.

<h3 style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); box-sizing: border-box;" id="isPasted" fr-original-style=" color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Learn how to weave without a loom, using a wooden board, and a needle and thread!</h3>Whether you&rsquo;re a seasoned weaver or a total beginner, these little creations are magical to do - and better yet, you can do it from your sofa!Discover a new skill, meet like-minded people and enjoy the rewarding feeling of having made something beautiful from scratch.In this workshop we&#39;ll put functionality and fashion aside for a moment to celebrate woven cloth, and the structures used to create it.Twills, herringbones, dogtooth, hopsack - typically part of a functional product, a garment or home furnishing - now shown in a different setting, as artworks, to be displayed and admired as a painting or a sculpture would be.We&rsquo;ll take our time to learn about the history of the fabrics we are weaving, and why it&#39;s important to challenge the mentality around fast fashion.Though first developed for its functionality, weaving has long been practiced as a form of expression, like many other artistic disciplines - but in today&#39;s fast paced fashion culture, we have started to think of textiles as &#39;disposable&rsquo; - and the craft of weaving is perceived as devalued.Through these weavings, we&rsquo;ll re-familiarise ourselves with the human input that goes into our clothing, and the skill, patience and craftsmanship of the makers.These little woven studies are magical to do, and using a needle and thread is a great exercise for getting to grips with the basics of weaving without the complexity of the loom.If you would like to purchase a materials kit, please get in touch with me well in advance of the workshop date.If you&#39;d prefer to gather your own materials, you will need:- Three bases to weave around (I use A6 pieces of birch plywood, (postcard size) with 3mm thickness but you can use anything vaguely rectangular or square, just make sure its strong and won&#39;t bend. Tiles work well, old coasters, slate, some people have even used old books and record sleeves!)- Double sided tape- A needle (a regular sharp one will be fine, but I use a flat &#39;bodkin&#39; needle)- Yarn! You can use any yarn for this, though I would suggest starting with something on the thicker side. I will be demonstrating the first design using rug wool. This online Training Room is aimed at Textile and Art teachers who are either new to teaching GCSE/A Level or those who want to add to their resources, learning easy to teach textiles skills and techniques and create a sketchbook resource that can be used in the classroom by students. Crashing & Shirring techniques as examples to show design development to final outcome. 
Each Course takes you through selecting a theme; How to then source primary and gives suggestions for relevant artist/designers to base the techniques on. It then takes you through developing initial ideas and learning first how to do and then further refine the techniques.

Your curator is NICKY SIMPSON, a contemporary textiles artist, who has 12 years teaching experience, heading up Fashion & Textiles at Hillview School in Kent and a previous 22 year career as a print designer in the heart of London. She has also mentored many graduate trainees, taken workshops at the Knitting & Stitching show, volunteers as an art therapist and for the past 5 years, has been a workshop developer and leader for Textile and Art teachers on behalf of the Textile Skills Academy.

Knitting the Rainbow is an experimental knitting workshop using simple techniques to explore colour:-

The session includes a worksheet, knitting demonstrations, plus a PowerPoint presentation covering plus graduation dyeing with Procion MX Cold Water dyes.&nbsp; There will also be a range of samples, to inspire further exploration after the session.

Aimed at anyone with an interest in textiles and soft sculpture, the workshop examines the artistic potential of knitting.&nbsp; The emphasis is on creating experimental samples, rather than a finished piece, although techniques can be adapted to create a garment, accessory or household object.

The workshop explores the exciting textural properties of felt, using basic knitting techniques and experimental materials.

There will be demonstrations of the knitting techniques, plus a discussion on the felting properties of different sheep breeds, and various wet felting methods.&nbsp; &nbsp;The workshop will focus on using pre-made yarns, and therefore will not be covering spinning with raw fibres.

Decaying Structures in Knitting is an experimental knitting workshop, exploring ways to create holes and open surfaces using simple hand knitting techniques.&nbsp; Exploiting the properties of the fibre, the session will also look at creating eroded surfaces using both heat and chemicals methods.

<li>Creating loose structures with large needles</li>
<li>Making patterns and random holes using casting on and off techniques</li>
<li>Using a heat gun to produce an eroded surface on synthetic materials</li>
<li>Applying devor&eacute; paste to knitting to create both textural and colour effects</li>

Material Adventures in Knitting

This kit and tutorials cover the equivalent of a 2 day workshop and will get you from beginner knitting skills (casting on, knit, pearl, casting off) to a confident intermediate level. You will explore a variety of more complex and decorative stitches as well as looking at more complex patterns for projects. You can then move onto altering patterns, converting patterns and designing and writing your own! You can even email to ask questions and get some more help.Please allow 7-10 days for your kit.
