<p>The prospect maturation process, from a lead to a drillable prospect, is at the heart of the exploration business. This 5 full day course will cover all aspects of the prospect maturation process: play understanding in the context of regional geological understanding, detailed prospect evaluation; realistic risk &amp; volume assessment consistent with the play understanding and prospect details, and an introduction to exploration economics.</p>
<p>Throughout the course, there is a strong focus on pragmatic (geo)logical approach for assessing those aspects that are input parameters for a meaningful assessment of prospect risks and volumes, with emphasis on a balanced integration of contributions from different sub-surface disciplines. Many examples from basins from around the world are used to illustrate how traps, reservoirs, seals and charge occur in different basin settings.</p>
<p><strong>Specifics topics that will be discussed include the following:</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>The statistical fundamentals for risk and volume assessment will be presented, with practical exercises for understanding the results of a risk &amp; volume assessment as they are displayed in expectation curves.</li>
<li>The difference between risk and uncertainty.</li>
<li>A full discussion of the essential requirements for a working petroleum system: Trap, reservoir, seal and charge.</li>
<li>Examples of how traps, reservoirs, seals and charge work in different basin types around the globe and in Australian basins.</li>
<li>Exercises and guidelines for estimating uncertainties for prospect parameters, including advice for deciding which distribution type to use, and how to constrain those distributions for meaningful uncertainty ranges (setting minimum most likely and maximum values). Particular emphasis will be given to estimating hydrocarbon column lengths with their associated uncertainties in undrilled prospects.</li>
<li>Prospects and plays: The value of play maps and how these should be used for assessment of prospect risks and for ranking of prospects within a play.</li>
<li>Calculating volume ranges for prospects.</li>
<li>Calculating volumes for groups of prospects; how to add risked prospect volumes for a statistically correct representation of the volume promise of a portfolio of prospects.</li>
<li>Geophysical evidence: Incorporating geophysical evidence (DHIs) consistently and realistically in a risk assessment. An understandable and geology-based workflow, consistent with Bayes theorem, will be presented.</li>

Each topic is introduced by a lecture, and learning is re-inforced by practical exercises and discussions. Hand-out materials in paper and/or electronic format will be provided. <p>Your expert course leader has a PhD in Geology from the University of Utrecht. He worked for 31 years (1979 -2010) with Shell as an exploration geologist in a variety of functions across the globe. As Principle Technical Expert, he was responsible for ensuring that Risk &amp; Volume assessments were carried out consistently and correctly in all of Shell's exploration units.</p>
<p>In this capacity, he led and participated in countless prospect review sessions and developed and conducted a successful in-house course on Risks &amp; Volume assessment. As manager of the Exploration Excellence Team, he performed in depth analysis of basins and plays and provided advice on exploration opportunities to senior management. Together with his team, he visited most of Shell's exploration offices, working hands-on with Shell's local exploration teams to generate new play and prospect ideas and to suggest evaluation techniques and technologies to apply.</p>
<p>In 2010, he was appointed as extraordinary professor Regional and Petroleum Geology at the VU university of Amsterdam and in 2012 also at the University of Utrecht. He was visiting professor at the University of Malaya (Malaysia).</p>
<p>Through his own consultancy, as of 2010, he provides advice on exploration activities to several companies and is regularly invited to carry out technical reviews. Activities cover all continents and include Portfolio Reviews, Prospect assessment, Play-based Exploration, and Geothermal activities.</p>
<p>He conducts courses on several topics including Risk &amp; Volume Assessment, Prospect Maturation, Basin Analysis, Play-based Exploration, Trap &amp; Seal Analysis, Petroleum Geology for Non-geologists.</p>

Laura is looking for a book you can&rsquo;t wait to talk to someone about, in the same way as a new film or the latest release on Netflix. A book that engrosses her from the first page to the last, desperate for someone she knows to read so they can discuss as soon as possible.</p><p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">It will always be an original hook that draws Laura in, a whole concept that can be summed up in one line that immediately stops her in my tracks and makes her think.</p><p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">Character and voice is also crucial. Laura is a huge fan of Mick Herron&rsquo;s Jackson Lamb, Richard Osman&rsquo;s <em fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Thursday Murder Club</em> cast and Lynda La Plante&rsquo;s Jane Tennison. She would really love to see more strong, memorable women in crime. In bookclub fiction, voices that have stayed with her are Adduni in <em fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">The Girl With The Louding Voice</em>, Cyril in <em fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">The Heart&rsquo;s Invisible Furies</em> and Molly in <em fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">The Maid</em>. Recently, Kitty in <em fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">How To Kill Men and Get Away With It</em> had Laura secretly rooting for her serial killer antics.</p><p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">Laura loves to be engrossed by a pacy, twisty, surprising plot. It doesn&rsquo;t need to be overly complex &ndash; sometimes the simplest ideas are the best. She wants to be thrown curveballs she never saw coming and be kept guessing until the last page. Books Laura has devoured are <em fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Nightwatching, The Housemaid</em>, <em fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">The Last Mrs Parrish</em>, <em fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Fourth Wing</em>, <em fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">None of This is True</em> and<em fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">&nbsp;American Dirt</em>.</p><p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">Books that play with genre also capture Laura. Novels such as <em fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Wrong Place, Wrong Time</em> which combined a crime mystery and the story of a mother&rsquo;s love with a speculative element and <em fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">The Time Traveller&rsquo;s Wife</em>, a high-concept love story which crossed time and age.</p><p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">Laura is a huge fan of true crime and would love to read a fiction version of podcasts she has been gripped by. She really enjoys cold cases being reopened as a result of new evidence or technology which exposes past injustices such as on <em fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Bone Valley</em>, <em fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">In The Dark</em> or <em fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Who Killed Emma?</em>&nbsp;She is particularly drawn to stories of deep deception or &lsquo;scams&rsquo; such as those by Anna Delvey or Coco Berthmann, <em fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Tinder Swindler</em> or <em fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Fyre Festival.&nbsp;</em>Laura is always intrigued by anything involving investigation into cults, such as in BBC Sound&rsquo;s <em fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">World of Secrets</em>.</p><p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">She also loves nothing more than sobbing her heart out over a book and being left emotionally wrung-out! Whether it be a devastating historical tragedy or star-crossed lovers torn apart by destiny. &nbsp;Books that have broken her heart include <em fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">The Bridges of Madison County, The Kite Runner,</em>&nbsp;<em fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo</em>, <em fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Birdsong</em>, <em fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">My Sister&rsquo;s Keeper</em>, <em fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Cilka&rsquo;s Journey</em>&nbsp;and <em fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Four Winds</em>.</p><p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">In non-fiction, Laura is looking for an untold story or perspective or an unexplored area where you have expertise or real-life experience. On deciding to pursue a career in publishing, Laura joined the Darley Anderson Agency where she worked across the Women’s Fiction list, reading submissions, handling contracts and supporting authors on their path to publication and beyond.
She co-founded Greenstone Literary with Tanera Simons in 2024 and is excited to build a list of authors.
Laura is looking for commercial crime, thriller, suspense, bookclub, historical and romance fiction as well as select non-fiction.
Above everything she wants to be entertained. Laura is looking for a book you can’t wait to talk to someone about, in the same way as a new film or the latest release on Netflix. A book that engrosses her from the first page to the last, desperate for someone she knows to read so they can discuss as soon as possible.
It will always be an original hook that draws Laura in, a whole concept that can be summed up in one line that immediately stops her in my tracks and makes her think.
Character and voice is also crucial. Laura is a huge fan of Mick Herron’s Jackson Lamb, Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club cast and Lynda La Plante’s Jane Tennison. She would really love to see more strong, memorable women in crime. In bookclub fiction, voices that have stayed with her are Adduni in The Girl With The Louding Voice, Cyril in The Heart’s Invisible Furies and Molly in The Maid. Recently, Kitty in How To Kill Men and Get Away With It had Laura secretly rooting for her serial killer antics.
Laura loves to be engrossed by a pacy, twisty, surprising plot. It doesn’t need to be overly complex – sometimes the simplest ideas are the best. She wants to be thrown curveballs she never saw coming and be kept guessing until the last page. Books Laura has devoured are Nightwatching, The Housemaid, The Last Mrs Parrish, Fourth Wing, None of This is True and American Dirt.
Books that play with genre also capture Laura. Novels such as Wrong Place, Wrong Time which combined a crime mystery and the story of a mother’s love with a speculative element and The Time Traveller’s Wife, a high-concept love story which crossed time and age.
Laura is a huge fan of true crime and would love to read a fiction version of podcasts she has been gripped by. She really enjoys cold cases being reopened as a result of new evidence or technology which exposes past injustices such as on Bone Valley, In The Dark or Who Killed Emma? She is particularly drawn to stories of deep deception or ‘scams’ such as those by Anna Delvey or Coco Berthmann, Tinder Swindler or Fyre Festival. Laura is always intrigued by anything involving investigation into cults, such as in BBC Sound’s World of Secrets.
She also loves nothing more than sobbing her heart out over a book and being left emotionally wrung-out! Whether it be a devastating historical tragedy or star-crossed lovers torn apart by destiny. Books that have broken her heart include The Bridges of Madison County, The Kite Runner, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Birdsong, My Sister’s Keeper, Cilka’s Journey and Four Winds.
In non-fiction, Laura is looking for an untold story or perspective or an unexplored area where you have expertise or real-life experience. As a reader of non-fiction she wants to be engaged in a relatable, accessible way. She loved the evocative settings and personal journeys in The Salt Path and The Wild Other. The laugh-out-loud More Than A Woman had her ordering this for many friends. Three Women and Educated are brilliant examples of non-fiction books that read like fiction. The awe-inspiring Do No Harm stayed with Laura long after reading. 
Laura is not looking for poetry, novellas, screenplays, or children’s books.

Our intention for the Wild Finca Online Rewilding Retreat is to help you strengthen your connection with nature. Week 1

Session 1: Introduction to Wild Finca Habitats

- LIVE a review of everyones Treasure Hunt (NB You will recieve the Treasure Hunt on Sunday 29th of September. The Treasure Hunt is specifically designed to get you outside and engaging directly with the natural world, as well as creating opportunities to put your learning into practice).

- Treasure Hunt: Participants will receive a list of items to find over the two-week period. Items may include specific plants, animal tracks, insects, etc.
Live Component:
- Review of Treasure Hunt findings.
- Identification and discussion of items found.
- Closing remarks and feedback session.

- Encourage hands-on engagement with nature.
- Provide a fun and interactive way to reinforce learning.
By the end of the retreat, you'll not only have deepened your connection with nature but also gained actionable insights to bring the spirit of rewilding into your own environment.
