Old slate can form the perfect base for a garden mosaic, hanging from the shed or balancing on a border. Bring new colour and interest into your garden with your very own bespoke design using vitreous glass, old china and sea washed glass!In this workshop you will use a reclaimed slate base to make a gorgeous mandala mosaic. You will be shown how to cut china and vitreous glass and you can also include sea washed glass and glass nuggets as part of your design. We will embed the tiles into an adhesive mortar mixture (an alternative method to gluing &amp; grouting). This course will introduce you to the beautiful world of colour analogue photography. Taking as a starting point the work of contemporary photographic artists working with colour, we will discuss and explore theory as well as developing core skills essential for the capture and printing of your own colour images.You will learn how to correctly expose colour negative film and learn more about the characteristics of different types of film and the effects that they can have on an image. Within Stills&rsquo; darkrooms you will learn how to process your colour film by hand and print high quality analogue C-Type prints.Day 1 Morning: Colour Theory, Inspiration and Refresher for SLR Camera Controls During the morning we will be looking at contemporary photographers and artists that have used colour to inform their practice in specific ways. We will look at the ways in which colour revolutionized the artworld and vernacular photography. We will also look at basic colour theory, exploring which colours compliment each other and why. We will also refresh basic camera controls, load cameras and head out to the streets to shoot a roll of film.Afternoon: Colour Film Processing During this session, you will learn how to hand process your colour film. We will discuss the loading of the tank and the preparation of the machine to ensure correct processing temperature. We will look at different film types, why you may want to use them and the range of effects that can be produced.Day 2 Morning: Introducing the Colour Darkroom and Contact Sheets You will be introduced to Stills colour darkooms and become familiarised with the range of equipment you will be using. You will be taught how to set up your darkroom for printing, how the colour print processor works and how to print a contact sheet for viewing your negatives.Afternoon: Printing In the afternoon you will be expected to make a series of final C-Type prints. You will be shown techniques to improve your printing skills and produce the images you desire. This last session will allow you time to print with some one-to-one attention. We will discuss some printing techniques to help you get the most from your negatives. CNC your own plant pot

Learn to carve wood starting with this nice little project of a Dala horse. The basic shape has been formed using a bandsaw so you will add detail and learn about carving following the grain of the wood.
You will learn safe wood carving techniques using the Mora 120 &amp; 106 wood carving knives, or other Mora knives more suitable for children. Some of these safe carving techniques are the same as those used for carving a range of other treen such as spoons. This is a less strenuous carving project than making a spoon so is also ideal for beginners. We will also cover sharpening knives as this is key to safe carving.
Other tools are also available to use and try out.

In this 3-hour workshop, Lou Davis will take you through how to make a gelatin (vege-gel) printing plate which can be used to print beautiful and colourful works of art.&nbsp;We&rsquo;ll cover a number of techniques including using stencils and masks, adding texture with botanicals and found objects and using household items for mark making and using home-made foam stamps.
We&rsquo;ll then take our completed prints and use them to create unique greeting cards.&nbsp;You will take home a set of up to 10 hand-printed, one-off greeting cards with envelopes. Gel printing for beginners

On this, 3 hour or 5 hour introduction to macram&eacute; workshop with Edinburgh artist Lucy Wayman, you get the opportunity to work on longer projects.&nbsp;You can choose to create a plant or pot hanger, or stay on to work on a more larger macram&eacute; project, such as a double plant hanger, wall hanging or bag.&nbsp;
The workshop will start with the basic principles and techniques of macram&eacute;, allowing you to build your confidence by creating small projects such as a key ring, before moving on to designing and creating your plant hanger, bespoke wall hanging, or bag.
Once you feel more confident, you will learn how to calculate rope lengths and plan designs to create your chosen hand-crafted macram&eacute; project&nbsp;using 100% cotton rope and a selection of coloured twines. A helpful instruction manual will be provided to guide you through your project.If you opt for the plant hanger project your workshop will finish after 3 hours. The longer wall hanging and bag projects last for an extra 2 hours, i.e. a 5 hour workshop.
This three-in-one workshop gives extra time for people who feel confident with the basics to challenge themselves with more elaborate designs under Lucy&#39;s guidance.

On this, 3 hour or 5 hour introduction to macramé workshop with Edinburgh artist Lucy Wayman, you get the opportunity to work on longer projects. 
You can choose to create a plant or pot hanger, or stay on to work on a more larger macramé project, such as a double plant hanger, wall hanging or bag. 
The workshop will start with the basic principles and techniques of macramé, allowing you to build your confidence by creating small projects such as a key ring, before moving on to designing and creating your plant hanger, bespoke wall hanging, or bag.
Once you feel more confident, you will learn how to calculate rope lengths and plan designs to create your chosen hand-crafted macramé project using 100% cotton rope and a selection of coloured twines. A helpful instruction manual will be provided to guide you through your project.
If you opt for the plant hanger project your workshop will finish after 3 hours. The longer wall hanging and bag projects last for an extra 2 hours, i.e. a 5 hour workshop.
This three-in-one workshop gives extra time for people who feel confident with the basics to challenge themselves with more elaborate designs under Lucy's guidance.
If you have any treasured gems such as old beads or drift wood you would like to incorporate into your design please bring them along and Lucy will show you a range of possibilities for including them in your piece. The class size is kept small so that Lucy can give you all the support you need.

The Arienas Collective workshops, courses and events are run from a supportive and welcoming home-based environment within a Georgian mews home in Edinburgh’s City Centre New Town. We invite you to join us, leave any day-to-day worries behind, and immerse yourself in being creative.
Spaces on our workshops and courses are limited so that our creative team of artists and makers can offer you the hands-on help and support you need to make the most of your time with us. 
All the equipment and materials you will need are included in the price, unless stated otherwise, plus light refreshments (a selection of Shibui teas, coffee, hot chocolate, and sweet or savoury snacks). 
On full day workshops you are welcome to bring your own lunch to eat inside or out; or there are a wide range of independent sit-in or takeaway delis, cafés, and restaurants, plus supermarkets, within a 5-10 minute walk.

Our workshop space is on the first-floor of a Georgian mews building and unfortunately we do not have lift access.
