<p>Well interventions have a large opportunity to enhance well production if correctly designed and implemented. Conversely, they can have a large negative impact on production if they're not.</p>
<p>The Well Intervention &amp; Productivity School (WIPS) is designed to help well intervention specialists, well service supervisors, and petroleum engineers become more aware of the problems that can arise in the planning and execution of well interventions.</p>
<p>This 5 full-day course is designed to make those that attend aware of how their job can directly impact the productivity. Early identification of problems in wells and effective interventions to fix problems can have a significant impact by minimising lost oil through formation damage and non productive time. As well as discussing best practice, time will be made available for discussion relating to specific problems that may be affecting fields operated by members of the class.</p>
<p>The course is a mixture of informal teaching and lectures. In addition, group exercises are used to reinforce the subjects covered during the lectures. This encourages cross discipline awareness, communication and motivates team building.</p>

<p>Your expert course leader has over 40 years in the oil industry. During that time, he has worked exclusively in well intervention and completions. After a number of years working for intervention service companies (mostly slickline), he joined BP as an offshore well service supervisor. He was responsible for the day-to-day supervision of well intervention work on many of BP's North Sea platforms and subsea wells. This included coil tubing, e-line, slickline, stimulation and well test operations.</p>
<p>An office-based role as a well operations engineer followed. He was responsible for planning, programming and organising of all the well intervention work on the Bruce and later the Magnus fields. In 1995, he moved into completion design. Since then, he has designed many platform and sub-sea completions, often travelling to the rig site to oversee the installation. In addition to his day-to-day work as a completion engineer, he regularly teaches completion and well intervention courses all over the world. He is also the author of the book, Well Control for Completions and Interventions, Gulf Publishing - April 2018. He has also appeared as an expert witness ant the International Court of Arbitration.</p>

Most anthropogenic (man-made) carbon dioxide is emitted by coal-fired or gas-fired power plants, and significant quantities of carbon dioxide are emitted through the production and separation of carbon dioxide-rich natural gas and industries such as cement, iron and steel. Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage, or CCUS, involves the long-term storage of captured carbon dioxide emissions in subsurface geologic formations.</p>
<p>This VILT course covers all aspects of CCUS including transport, storage and monitoring, economics and community engagement. It explores in detail the challenges of the current technology of geological storage, monitoring and verification including examples from working projects around the world. Many of these technologies are commonly employed by the petroleum industry. Successful deployment of CCUS will also require economic incentives, appropriate regulation, clarity on liability issues and acceptance by the community. These aspects of CCUS, and the corresponding opportunities for appropriately skilled organisations and individuals also will be discussed.</p>

<p>Your first expert course leader spent 18 years in the Petroleum Industry before joining academia, in both technical and managerial roles with Shell, Arco and Vico. He has received numerous awards, including Distinguished Service, Honorary member and Special Commendation awards from the American Association of Petroleum Geologist (AAPG) and was AAPG's International Vice-President and recently chairman of AAPG's House of Delegates (the Associations Parliamentary body).</p>
<p>He is an SPE Distinguished Lecturer (DL) and has served as DL for several other professional organisations, including, AAPG, IPA and PESA. He is currently a Professor of Petroleum Geology and Engineering at the Australian School of Petroleum, University of Adelaide. He holds the South Australia State Chair in Carbon Capture &amp; Storage (CCS) and is also presently Distinguished Scientist of the Cooperative Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Technologies (CO2CRC), having served earlier as the Storage Program Manager and Chief Scientist.</p>
<p>Your second expert course leader has a wide and deep knowledge of major capture technologies: solvent, membrane and adsorption based technologies and has developed pathways for retrofitting CO<sub>2</sub> capture and storage (CCS) to fossil fuel-based power plants. He has been actively engaged in Post-combustion capture project management and demonstration projects in Victoria's Latrobe Valley on CO<sub>2</sub> capture and hydrogen production, and on CO<sub>2</sub> capture using membrane contactor technology.</p>
<p>He has led various feasibility studies for the Asian Development Bank on CO<sub>2</sub> Capture at Indian Oil Corporation's refineries, for JPOWER on hydrogen production from Victorian brown coal and for Kawasaki on incorporation of CCS in hydrogen production from fossil fuel. He has authored multiple peer reviewed journal articles, co-authored various confidential reports on CO<sub>2</sub> capture, utilization and hydrogen production and utility, and has presented his work at various conferences, symposiums and seminars. He has a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Monash University Australia and a Master of Technology in Process Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Delhi India.</p>

<h2><strong>About this Training Course</strong> </h2>
<p>Geomechanical evaluations are about the assessment of deformations and failure in the subsurface due to oil &amp; gas production, geothermal operations, CO<sub>2</sub> storage and other operations. All geomechanical evaluations include four types of modelling assumptions, which will be systematically addressed in this training, namely:</p>
<p>1.      Geometrical modelling assumption: Impact of structural styles on initial stress and stress redistribution due to operations</p>
<p>2.      Formation (or constitutive) behaviour: Linear elastic and non-linear behaviour, associated models and their parameters, and methods how to constrain these using</p>
<p>3.      Initial stress: Relation with structural setting and methods to quantify the in-situ stress condition</p>
<p>4.      Loading conditions: Changes in pore pressure and temperature on wellbore and field scale</p>
<p>This 5 full-day course starts with the determination of the stresses in the earth, the impact of different structural styles, salt bodies, faulting and folding on the orientation of the three main principal stress components. Different (field) data sources will be discussed to constrain their magnitude, while exercises will be made to gain hands-on experience.</p>
<p>Subsequently, the concepts of stress and strain will be discussed, linear elasticity, total and effective stress and poro-elasticity in 1D, 2D and 3D, as well as thermal expansion. Participants will be able to construct and interpret a Mohr-circles. Also, different failure mechanisms and associated models (plastic, viscous) will be discussed. All these concepts apply on a material point level.</p>
<p>Next, geomechanics on the wellbore scale is addressed, starting with the stress distribution around the wellbore (Kirsch equations). The impact of mudweight on shear and tensile failure (fracturing) will be calculated, and participants will be able to determine the mudweight window stable drilling operations, while considering well deviation and the use of oil-based and water-based muds (pore pressure penetration). Fracturing conditions and fracture propagation will be addressed.</p>
<p>Field-scale geomechanics is addressed on the fourth day, focussing on building a 3D geomechanical model that is fit-for-purpose (focussing on the risks that need evaluation). Here, geological interpretation (layering), initial stress and formation property estimation (from petrophysical logs and lab experiments) as well as determining the loading conditions come together.</p>
<p>The course is concluded with interpretation of the field-wide geomechanical response to reservoir depletion with special attention to reservoir compaction &amp; subsidence, well failure and fault reactivation &amp; induced seismicity. Special attention is paid to uncertainties and formulating advice that impacts decision-making during development and production stages of a project.</p>

He guided multi-disciplinary teams in compaction &amp; subsidence, top-seal integrity, fault reactivation, induced-seismicity and containment. He was also involved in projects related to Carbon Capture Storage (CCS).</p>
<p>He is the founding father of various innovations and assessment tools, and developed new insights into the root causes seismicity induced by Oil &amp; Gas production. Furthermore, he was the regional coordinator for technology deployment in Africa, and Smart Fields (DOFF, iField) design advisor for Shell globally. He was responsible for the Geomechanical competence framework, and associated virtual and classroom training programme in Shell for the last 10 years. He served as one of the Subject Matter Expert (SME) on geomechanics, provided Technical Assurance to many risk assessments, and is a co-author of Shell's global minimun standard on top-seal integry and containment. He has a MSc and PhD in Civil Engineering and computational mechanics from Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands.</p>

Over four weeks, learn how to approach poster design in a creative and practical way. <p>Governments, regulators and energy companies are pursuing CO<sub>2</sub> storage technologies to meet their net-zero carbon commitments as well as targets set by the international Paris Agreement on climate change. For successfully executing Carbon Capture &amp; Storage (CCS) projects, various technical, operational, economic and environmental risks and associated stakeholders need to be managed.</p>

In addition, exercises are used to practise the aspects of the CCS risk assessment process. <p>Your expert course leader has more than 36 years of experience in the oil &amp; gas industry with Shell. He gained broad experience in petroleum engineering, with expertise in integrated production systems from subsurface, wells and surface. He has had assignments in Production Technology, R&amp;D, Production Chemistry, Rock Mechanics and Reservoir Engineering cEOR, with a proven track record in technology screening, development and deployment, field development planning, conceptual well design and Production System Optimization (PSO) of gas and oil fields as well as preparing Well, Reservoir &amp; Facility Management (WRFM) strategies and plans. He had also worked on assignments in NAM and did fieldwork in Oman, Gabon and Shell Nigeria. He is a skilled workshop facilitator. He discovered his passion for teaching following an assignment in Shell Learning. During his time in Shell, he developed and taught technical courses to Shell professionals via blended learning.</p>
<p><strong>Trainer 2:</strong></p>
<p>Your second expert course leader has over 30 years of experience identifying, assessing and mitigating technical risks with Shell. The main focal point of his experience is in subsurface and Geomechanical risks. He is the the founding father of various innovations in how we assess risks by tool development (for bore hole stability, 3D geomechanical field evaluations and probabilistic assessment). He also developed an eye for people motivation, change management and facilitation. He was also responsible for the Geomechanical competence framework, and associated virtual and classroom training programme in Shell for 10 years.</p>

<p>Your third expert course leader has more than 30 years of experience in Shell, focusing on research and development in drilling and offshore systems. His areas of expertise is in project management, finance, business planning, investment, development studies and economics models. In 2021, he worked on a project that looked into the economic evaluation of P18A field complex for CO<sub>2</sub> storage. He has an MSc in Mechanical Engineering (M.E.) TU Delft Netherlands (Hons) and a baccalaureate from Erasmus University Rotterdam.</p>
