We are delighted to welcome our new Executive Director Paul Smyth, who comes to us with a wealth of experience and a strong reputation for ground breaking youth work. I am thrilled to have taken up the post of Executive Director with Politics in Action – and I want to start by congratulating my predecessor Patricia O’Lynn on her election to the Northern Ireland Assembly. We live in a turbulent time for politics around the world, nationally and locally – and this makes the work of supporting young people’s role as active citizens more challenging and even more important. We are emerging from a global pandemic which has put unprecedented restrictions on the lives and freedoms of young people, and which has impacted their learning, their social lives, their relationships and for some their mental health. Politics in Action responded proactively to these challenges by moving workshops online and ensuring continuity. I am optimisticwe can return to largely face-to-face delivery of our programmes with young people in schools and other settings, and can find new ways of engaging with more young people and in particular those who are not normally invited into conversations about politics and citizenship. Much of what we already do is in collaboration with schools and with other youth organisations. I see so much potential for additional collaborations that allow our little charity to punch above its weight. One of the many attractions of the role is the excellent Board of Trustees who provide strong governance, leadership and vision for Politics in Action. They bring significant social and political capital to the charity and use it in the interests of young people and our shared future. I would love to hear your ideas about how Politics in Action should direct our energies over the coming months and years. We exist to give opportunities and purpose through training, employment and community. We seek to empower and equip women with hope for a future, and to give them the tools to secure it. We are a social enterprise with the aim of providing a safe environment where young women can flourish and reach their full potential. Using opportunities in the hospitality industry, we want to promote employability and entrepreneurship, equipping women with transferrable skills for the working world. We wish to offer accredited training courses, work experience and paid employment within Olive Lane to empower young women to find their purpose and build their career.

To sum us up in a nutshell, we’re a social enterprise (a not for profit organisation) passionate about helping children out of poverty and into a life of success and love. Founded in 2008 by David Montgomery, Goanserve is taking groups of volunteer travellers to help the children of Goa now. David’s Story It all started back in 2005 when my wife and I went to Goa for our twentieth wedding anniversary. Walking through a flea market, we stumbled across a campaign stall for a street child rescue organisation. That was the first time we met Matthew, the co-founder of the award-winning charity El Shaddai. Matthew invited us to his home for dinner that evening and while we chatted over our meal, he shared stories of the children in his care. El Shaddai was working tirelessly to provide food, clothing and shelter for the children but most importantly, the loving and caring environment they deserve. He encouraged us to sponsor a child, and we did. That child was Laxman, age ten. You can read Laxman’s story here.
