Adapting a Blackwork stitch to fill in a shape.</li></ul>All guided by your tutor who has over 25 years experience in professional embroidery.  <h3 fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Learning Outcome</h3>At the end of this course you will have learned all the essential blackwork embroidery techniques to allow you to go on and create your own pieces.Certificate upon completion.Delegates will receive a certificate of achievement.Course dates:Arranged upon request - we require a minimum of 5 students. &nbsp; Included in the kit;*Fabrics. &nbsp;(We use a high quality Zweigart Aida and even weave). with pre drawn design in water soluble ink on main project piece. *Spiral bound, lay flat course booklet or Access to our Online learning course (English text). *A full set of our Unique Blackwork threads.* Relevant charts and designs. *Needle book containing the appropriate high quality John James needles and needle threader. All presented in a box which you can use to keep your work clean as you stitch.<h3 fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">What&rsquo;s not included</h3>Scissors. &nbsp;Please bring your own stitching scissors. &nbsp;We may have some available on the day but past experience is that these items seem to go missing easily, so in order to control costs, we kindly request you bring your own.Basic skills required No previous skill is required but you will need fairly good eye sight (or your glasses/magnifier) and be able to hold a sewing needle.Refreshments and food Light refreshments will be provided and we are lucky to have a Sallys cafe only 3 minutes away for lunch. &nbsp;You are also welcome to bring your own.Allergy Advice Our embroidery kits are packed in our studio which does use natural animal fibres.Purchases on the dayA number of items from our studio will be available for sale during the course and we can accept most major (UK registered)&nbsp;debit and credit cards.About The VenueWarwick Mill Business Village is conveniently located on the A69 just 3 miles outside Carlisle City Centre.There is plenty of free parking at the Mill.Warwick Mill is fully accessible but please let us know if you have special requirements.Travelling by train; Find a bus to Warwick Bridge from Carlisle bus station which is about a 10 minute walk from the Railway Station. You need the 685 service from Carlisle to Brampton/Newcastle. This is a totally practical day doing a large variety of Surface Textile Techniques. This course is aimed at Textile and Art teachers who are either new to teaching GCSE/A Level Art & Design or those who want to add to their resources by spending a whole day developing exciting new ideas for surface techniques linked to a large variety of relevant artists and designers. 
Learn and practice new and exciting skills that will enhance your teaching
Develop learning from KS3, creating independent, confident and enthusiastic learners at KS4/5.
Practice and discuss techniques including: Heat press transfer printing, screen printing, mono printing, crashing, shirring, heat shibori, PVA, ruffles, marbling, free hand embroidery, using a heat gun and more.
Mark making for textile design
Computer Aided design.

Learn, practice and create a range of new and exciting techniques related to relevant artists and designers
How to link a variety of techniques to artists through creative practical workshops
Looking at both historical and contemporary textile artists, fine artists and fashion designers
Understand how to develop knowledge of artists from KS3 onwards, creating independent, confident and enthusiastic learners at KS4/5.
Innovative ways in which students can explore, investigate and express ideas through mark making related to their primary sources and relating the right primary source to their artists.

The Surface Textile Techniques face-to-face course is an experience that delivers textiles skills, knowledge and understanding. It is a great learning environment which allows you to gain new skills and techniques, showing how these can be incorporated in lesson plans and delivered in a fun, inspiring and engaging way. You can ask questions direct to the course developer/leader, practice skills, create a sketchbook resource for the classroom and network with other teachers.



Course Developer and Leader: NICKY SIMPSON


NICKY SIMPSON 
Your course leader is NICKY SIMPSON, a contemporary textiles artist, who has 12 years teaching experience, heading up Fashion & Textiles at a school in Kent. She has taught Art & Design Textiles at GCSE and A Level, Design and Technology/Textiles at GCSE & A Level and BTEC Level 3 Fashion. 
Her last set of grades were: A Level 100% A-A*; GCSE 70% A-A* (100% A*-B). She had a previous 22-year career as a print designer and colourist, creating print ranges for the international market. For the past 8 years Nicky has been a workshop developer and leader for the online and F2F courses for Textile and Art teachers on behalf of the Textile Skills Centre, including pattern development. Nicky has mentored many graduate trainees, and now mentors many fellow teachers through the TSC mentorship programme.
