The Infant Feeding Team The UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative works with health care professionals to provide parents with the best support to build close and loving relationships with their baby, and to feed their baby in ways that support optimum health and development. We were re-accredited as a Gold service in January 2020! Return with your baby for extra help. The infant feeding team run antenatal breastfeeding workshops every week and more information can be found under related links. Part of the role of the team is to provide ongoing training and support to the midwives and maternity support staff around infant feeding as well as write and update the guidelines and policies. This means any of the staff are able to answer your questions and you can expect to receive consistent and evidence based support from your community and hospital team throughout your pregnancy and in the early days after having your baby. If your midwife or other health care professional feels you would benefit from more specialist support they will put in a referral to our team. We aim to get in touch as soon as possible during the working week after the referral has been received. There are baby friendly champions in every ward area and community team within maternity. They are staff who attend regular updates and disseminate key information to the people they work with to ensure you receive the most up to date information on infant feeding. During pregnancy

Lighthouse Medical is pleased to sponsor Lighthouse Educational Foundation. The charity’s aim is to provide funding for all types of Primary Care education and ultimately improve healthcare for the Island’s population. They work proactively to fund and organise education/courses that fill the gaps identified by structured training needs analysis. The charity was founded in 2010 and has already helped 1,857 Islanders to further their education, with general and specific training courses. From 2011-2018, the Foundation invested £184,794 in our local healthcare workers. This included supporting local GPs, GPwSIs, Practice Nurses, reception and admin staff. Courses funded so far have ranged from half-day sessions to Masters courses. The charity has supported staff in clinical and non-clinical roles and can help when other funding is limited or not available. The aim has always been to organise courses here on the Isle of Wight, reducing travel time, increasing the ability to attend, and enabling the charity to keep costs down. Much of the funding is donated by Lighthouse Medical, a healthcare organisation that is committed to re-investing in the Island’s Primary Care services. The belief is that by helping to meet education/training needs, Isle of Wight Primary healthcare staff will remain keen, enthusiastic, and able to provide the first-class healthcare services that patients across the Island deserve. This will also help to maintain a sustainable improvement in the Isle of Wight’s health services.

Haverstock Fencing Club was formed in 1995 by a committee of epee fencers from London clubs who wanted to establish a centre of excellence in North London. They quickly managed to gain a reputation on two levels, namely as a place for elite fencers to train for the competition circuit, and secondly as a friendly but professional environment for children and adults to learn how to fence. The evidence of their success speaks for itself. Haverstock fencers have a fearsome reputation on the competition circuit, with many current and former national champions training there, male and female. Haverstock has been the dominant force in British epee fencing almost since it was established. Indeed, when top fencers arrive in London from abroad, Haverstock is normally their first port of call. More importantly, Haverstock has always seen itself as a progressive club, open to all, with a particular emphasis on children and the local community. Beginners courses are often oversubscribed and many of those that went through the early courses are now well regarded on the senior circuit. Haverstock coaches take great pride in the ability of their young protégés, and the club has also catered for disabled fencers. Costs are kept low to ensure the sport is open to all. The club has two full-time coaches (with World and European Championship experience) and two part-time coaches, who take care of all newcomers, giving them a solid grounding in the basic skills required, teaching in a fun but challenging way. Haverstock is one of the best equipped clubs in the country, with plenty of kit for beginners to use for free while they decide whether the sport is for them. Training takes place three nights a week, with a mix of group lessons, individual lessons and fitness work to cater for all levels. We also run popular training camps and weekend courses. The Chairman and committee are dedicated to continuing to cater for both the elite competitors who have so enhanced the reputation of the club as well as newcomers to the sport, along with the many children and adults who are now “hooked” on fencing, having had their introduction to it at Haverstock.

Expectations and aspirations are high here and we are committed to developing the young people in our care, whatever their talents. Children of all abilities succeed at this school and are encouraged to develop academically, physically and spiritually, fulfilling their potential in a happy, caring environment. When Ofsted last visited, it commented: “The all-pervading caring ethos ensures that pupils are happy and able to thrive from the moment they arrive at school. Pupils are very keen to share their pleasure of being at school and went out of their way to let inspectors know.” That is every bit as true today as it was then. Examination performance is very strong. At A level, students reach exceptional levels in a thriving Sixth Form of 350 students. Students routinely progress to Russell Group universities, including year-on-year to Oxford and Cambridge. In 2022, two students progressed to Oxford and Cambridge to read medicine, with a further moving to Oxford to study mathematics; in addition, one student is embarking on a degree in veterinary science. We are proud of the numbers of students who move on to university education, typically around 75% each year, and even more delighted in the variety of subjects that are chosen, following a rich A level experience here. Increasing numbers are also progressing to some prestigious higher-level apprenticeships, including one this year in software engineering with Lockheed Martin. At GCSE, students also perform well, both in value-added terms and in raw attainment. As a consequence, we have large numbers moving in to our Sixth Form, complemented every year with a number of students from other schools who choose to join us for their A level programme. Ofsted confirmed the strength in pastoral care alongside provision for purposeful learning by adding that we “have established a school that holds the academic success and emotional well-being of each pupil at its heart.” As a parent of four children myself, I am acutely aware of the increasing importance of education in today’s world and the role that we, as teachers, have to play in developing our children so that they are fully equipped to make positive contributions to society. The staff at Sheldon School are extremely committed and dedicated to ensure that this is the case and I am personally determined to see all children flourish here. I also value enormously the links between school and home, success being built on strong partnerships with parents and ourselves. As director of Simply First Aid, Piers Osborne has taken on this exciting role after years of preparation. Having started in the leisure industry, working with children and babies, he moved to education where he spent 9 years lecturing on a range of further, higher and community education courses for the Sports, Early Years and Community Studies departments. He left this role to get out of the class room and into informal education through outdoor activities. Almost since it’s inception Piers has been a member of Cornwall Search and Rescue Team helping to prepare it’s medics as the Medical Training Officer. He had the privilege to work with some extraordinary people until a relocation forced him to step down. He was also a member of Metropolitan Caloundra Surf Lifesaving Club and Watergate Bay Surf Lifesaving Club and an active member of the Scout Movement. As well as specialising in outdoor and wilderness first aid he continues to specialise in paediatric first aid and education. Over the years Piers has worked with a number of First Aid training providers, including the Red Cross, Royal Life Saving Society and St John Ambulance, to deliver First Aid and Casualty Care across Europe and Australia. Screenshot 2019-01-22 at 17.53.57.png Dominic Osborne With a background in emergency medical response, security solutions and both pool and beach lifeguarding, Dom was a perfect choice for Simply First Aid! He has over 15 years experience and was responsible for the Metropolitan Caloundra beaches for a number of years. During this time Dom was responsible for the ongoing development of all the beach personnel. As such he wrote and delivered bespoke training solutions and linked training to the Australian Professional Ocean Lifeguards Association scheme. Dom provides our Quality Assurance and continues to deliver training when required. He is as comfortable behind a desk as he is being lowered into shark infested seas from a rescue helicopter! He has long since left the world of lifeguarding behind and now provides both medical and security solutions for mine sites, race meets and the like. Dom has recently been to conferences on the East and West Coasts of America in order to secure opportunities for the ‘Event Medics‘ side of the business. He has competed in the Australian Open Iron Man, his 3rd ever triathlon, and was an elite cyclist. When not training, you’ll find him spending time with his family and ‘staying salty’! Moving and handling doughnuts.jpg Adrian Sevume Kauma Adrian Sevume Kauma (SK) is an eccentric trainer who has a strong passion for first aid. His first experience in doing CPR (on his daughter) has inspired him to teach many people in first aid and he aspires to make a difference in people's lives through the means of first aid. He teaches our portfolio of workplace first aid courses and enjoys delivering our schools programme to large groups. Adrian is known for being an "Awesome trainer" as he enjoys using the word "Awesome" or "Awesomness!" throughout his sessions (He does not know that it is not even a word, so when you see him just humour him). He uses anecdotes, stories and his own experiences in his training to make first aid easy, practical and fun.
