Lowimpact is a co-op with ideas, inspiration, information and advice on low-impact living: how to reduce your negative impacts on nature, and increase positive ones. We network with other groups who are building the components of a new economy that doesn’t damage people, communities and environment, and we work with specialists building new monetary / exchange systems that form the core of this new economy. If you believe that humanity is on the wrong path, then you’ll find plenty of resources here to help get ourselves onto a better one. Explore our topics to find ways to bring about changes in your own life, large and small. Tell us what you’re doing, and offer advice to others. We recognise that large, centralised institutions are keeping us on the wrong path, intent on maintaining a status quo that gives them their wealth and power. Life is busy. So much to do and achieve. Days turn into weeks, time is always slipping away as we try to fit everything into an already overfilled schedule. We lack the space to befriend ourselves. To listen to what our body and heart really desires for us. This can leave us feeling tired, with headaches, anxious, unable to sleep, full of aches and pains, a sense of being unwell but unable to pinpoint what or why. My experience of this, left my body exhausted and my mind in a state of confusion. Eventually my body refused to play the game of life at the pace I demanded. I knew deep down something had to change. I returned to my practice of yoga, I studied the breath, its connection to our emotions and thoughts. I learnt how the body holds the secrets to our own happiness. I studied yoga nidra, different meditation and awareness practices, relaxation techniques and the power of visualisation. I watched how as we layer these practices into one long experience it has the power to shift entire groups of people from a sense of dis-ease into complete ease. This makes my heart sing, to take just an hour with a group of people and create a space to enable them to reconnect to their most authentic selves. Second Floor Studios & Arts (SFSA) was established in 1997. It is a leading arts organisation providing affordable studio space for visual and fine artists' and craft and designer makers. Our core aim is providing best quality studios at monthly rental prices our studio members can afford and whom would otherwise struggle to find comparable studio workspace on the open commercial market. Aims: • to provide a supportive environment in which our members can flourish, allowing for the time and the space needed to research, develop, experiment and make their work. • to support continual professional development beyond the physical studio space for our community. Foster a vibrant environment of peer support, networking and collaboration. Where possible provide technical facilities and training, gallery space, opportunities for employment and actively encourage, promote and support individual member projects. • to build creative partnerships and initiatives with local and national arts organisations, businesses and authorities. • utilising the skills of experienced professionals to deliver a wide range of educational and outreach projects enabling diverse groups of people within the community to participate in, learn through and work in the visual arts and craft and designer making sector. • to promote the role that Art, Craft and Design can play in the regeneration of towns and cities, by engaging with people and communities helping to foster local identity and a ‘sense of place’ through the arts. It was the possibility of creating Art for everyday that inspired me in the beginning. Art in its broadest sense, is the expressions of human imagination and skill and I believe it can make a big difference to everyday life. It can inspire us, give us an outlet from our daily routines and boost our happiness levels. And yet we tend to think of it as something to be saved for special occasions, or enjoyed from a distance, behind glass. My own wedding china for example, spent most of its life in a cupboard gathering dust – and I think that is really where it all began. I wanted to create everyday things that were both beautiful and robust enough to be part of everyday life at home. I was almost fifty by then, and increasingly aware that time was running out. The delightful small factory we found in Stoke quickly ran out of capacity and even with a second factory, we quickly ran out of capacity. By happenstance, we were introduced to a ceramic factory in Sri Lanka, where traditional studio skills have been preserved. Even then, we spent a full year working on techniques before we were able to start production in earnest. That year, I made eight two-week trips and seemed to be rarely out of an airport. During one such trip, I stopped off for a few days in Southern India to visit a textile factory, with an idea of developing some table linens. And in this way, our product range began to grow…

The idea for ilmburst began when we found that many of us as parents don’t have the confidence to teach our children their religion. This is due to a variety of reasons. Some of us feel we don’t have the knowledge and ability, others among us don’t have the time to research and prepare the material needed to teach our children and yet others are afraid that they may teach something incorrectly or use inauthentic material. We aim to help change that, in sha Allah. We should all be able to help teach our children in an engaging and fun way. What better way to bond with your children than doing something which is pleasing to Allah?
