My Friendly Neighbourhood Dance Studio. As someone who as been teaching and working alongside children and young people for 25 years, I genuinely believe I have the most privileged and fun job in the world. Being an educator and innovator through dance and movement has not always been straightforward; however, the rewards have always far outweighed any struggles. Simply seeing a kid dart across the floor smiling, creating a silly move, or an aspiring dancer suddenly find their confidence to shine. Priceless. Teaching and nurturing the next generation is a responsibility I don’t take for granted. These dancers are someone’s son or daughter, and it’s a teachers job to guide them and do right by them. I’ve always seen teaching as a two way learning stream; me teaching and inspiring the dancers, and in return the dancers inspiring and teaching me. Over the years, I’ts been a blessing to have met and worked alongside talented young people and professionals and been involved in some unforgetable creative projects and performances. These life changing experiences drive me to keep creating and sharing this energy with other children and young people. Having to evolve, think on one's feet and reflect on how to approach a project, a personality, or simply, how best to deliver the next class is an educator's creative responsibility. Being a dancer and teacher taught me to be innovative, present, and reflective and surrounded me with laughter and creativity. All of the above is not only positive for my mental health and well-being but reflected in the children, young people, and now adults I teach at Smikle Dance Studio. My vision for Smikle Dance Studio was to create a friendly and welcoming space where my personality and body of work could continue to flourish and grow. I feel like my studio is me. My years of experience as a dancer, performer and teacher blend into one environment shared with the local community, my SYD dancers, my fantastic team and my professional teachers.

"We encourage, enable, develop, mentor, facilitate, empower and support local creative arts practitioners from a wide range of backgrounds." Since our Foundation, in September 2014, we have staged over 120 exhibitions showcasing a varied body of work, by artists both emerging and established. Encompassing a diverse and multi-disciplinary range of artistic practices including: Painting, Sculpture, Printmaking, Illustration, Photography, Sound, Video and Performance Art. A comprehensive list of all of our past exhibitions can be found under 'Portfolio'. Our overarching ‘Philosophy’ is to actively encourage, enable, develop, mentor, facilitate, empower and support local creative arts practitioners from a wide range of background with a priority to engage in discussion around accessibility within the arts in relation to mental health, financial hardship and institutional bias. We have also provided work placements to a number of European students, via the Erasmus + and Gecko programme. Partnering with local Venues, Institutes and schools , we aim to develop a strong community that has access to free space, free mentoring and the ability to grow and learn from each others valuable experience and skills. The spaces are offered for hire and for free depending on the nature of the request and is offered to both emerging artists or collectives that deserve a space to explore and harness potential, or established artists with a strong visual aesthetic. Our initiative is to offer this space first and foremost to west-midlands based artists who wish to strengthen their local artistic community and create a discourse for regeneration. We curate approx one show per month in our two exhibition spaces and these are either from chosen submitted proposals or from exceptional and forward thinking artists that we find on our travels. In-between these exhibitions we encourage groups or collectives with a passion for community welfare and development to use the spaces for poetry , music, discussions, rehearsals , workshops or their own curatorial interests. Art is an enriching and highly effective tool in public involvement. The creative methods and processes of art production can help people understand concepts and ideas in a totally different way. An understanding of cultural uniformity, educational concepts and sectoral relevance in society can be understood better through collaboration and art. When making art, individuals interact with their own unique view point and this brings greater appreciation and understanding of ideas, and if appropriately considered, this could improve society. Art making is also an excellent way of documenting social experience. We live in the digital age, this will inevitably bring social change and we can explore how this affects us through visual means. It’s important that we document social change through the Arts. Visual methods are also a very effective way of helping people who may struggle with mental health address psychological issues. Sometimes a visual approach works best in explaining individual perspectives.

Encouraging communities to work together to share knowledge and learning to create more vibrant and resilient places. Climate change will impact most on the vulnerable. We want to see a more significant leadership role from Local Authorities, preventative health organisations, faith networks, colleges and NGOs, able to influence, train and inspire in our shift to a low carbon society.

Our programmes use creative activities as a means of building confidence, communication skills, creativity and engagement in learning, whilst also helping children and young people to develop healthy relationships with others and the world around them. My name is Rai. I’m a yoga teacher and a coach of several motivational courses, for a year I studied with one of the best teachers in Portugal, Ericeira - Yoga Alliance Certified - 200-hour program. I teach international community in Lisbon and virtually. Before yoga I was lost mentally and physically. I couldn't find a movement practice that motivates me to constantly show up for myself until I found breath work, meditation and yoga asanas. This is what inspired me to become a teacher and to share what I love.
