I first came across the Alexander Technique when I was looking for something to help me stop getting tension headaches, lower back pain, and neck problems. Finding a teacher and learning the principles, ideas and concepts of the technique gave me an appreciation of what I was doing to myself that created the pain, as well as how I was putting myself wrong in some other areas of my life too! I learned the good news: that if I was causing my difficulties, then I also had the power to stop causing them. I have become a more flexible, happier, calmer and easier to be with person. I move in a more co-ordinated way and have re-found the joy in moving I remember having as a child. I no longer have any tension headaches, neck problems or lower back aches. I feel more at home with myself than I ever have in the past. I am a teacher trained by the ITM (Interactive Teaching Method Association). This means that I studied for four years and passed four written and one practical exam. I spent six months within the course as a student teacher. I graduated in 2003. I am a member of the ITM Teachers’ Association and have a BSc (hons) degree from the University of Bristol. I have taught individuals, small groups and evening classes, as well as workshops and courses for businesses, colleges, the WEA, the WI and the local council. I have run workshops at festivals such as the Larmer Tree and the Big Green Gathering. I have taught music students at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. I also taught students at the Musical Theatre School in Somerset, and dance students at Bristol Dance Centre. I love teaching this work because I love seeing my students improve their movement, their thinking and the way they see themselves as well as the way they see the world.

About Us The Scottish Universities’ International Summer School (SUISS) offers an intense, challenging and diverse programme of study that takes place annually during the months of July and August in Edinburgh, the world’s first UNESCO City of Literature. We offer three courses in Text and Context: British and Irish Literature from 1900 to the Present, one course in Creative Writing, and one course in Contemporary British and Irish Theatre and Performance. Our literature courses offer extensive examination of Modernism, Contemporary Literature and Scottish Literature, while our Creative Writing course allows students to develop their personal writing portfolios. The Theatre and Performance course, which explores both theoretical and performative approaches to drama, coincides with the Edinburgh International Festival and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and is delivered in partnership with the Scottish Playwrights’ Studio. We are located at the University of Edinburgh, and run by a team of hard-working individuals, led by the Administrator and Co-Directors. This core team, along with our advisory committee, oversees the lecture programme and management of the summer school each year. In the summer, we employ volunteer student hosts, who are SUISS graduates themselves. They are on hand to address the needs and concerns of our visiting students. Our very talented tutors, who are usually in the process of completing a PhD in a literature related field, instruct the seminars. Around 4 million people visit Edinburgh every year, many of them for the Edinburgh International Book Festival in August – the largest public celebration of the written word in the world – but many to explore the literary city and all it has to offer the book lover. Edinburgh is an acclaimed centre of learning. The National Library of Scotland (NLS) is a copyright library, and holds a copy of every book published in the United Kingdom. One of the largest and finest collections in the British Isles, the NLS provides outstanding facilities for research in all fields. The resources of the NLS are complimented by The University of Edinburgh Library, the extensive collections of which are designed to meet the needs of both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Hi, I'm Carol, a musician, performer and educator based in Newcastle Upon Tyne. Since childhood I have been involved in the performing arts throughout school, training in dance from the age of 5 years and performing in school music and drama productions. Since then I have continued performing and studying, gaining a BA (Hons) Degree in Dance, teaching dance at Acting Up Theatre School and in after-school clubs, writing and performing my own poetry, performing in Theatre in Education and singing and playing percussion in various bands across the North East and Europe. I have worked extensively at Sage Gateshead across their Learning and Participation Programme, as a Project Musician and Programme Leader for their CoMusica, Early Years, Loud & Clear Foster and Adoptive Families and Young People's Programmes, delivering music-making projects and devising training in Early Years & Family Learning, Inclusive Practice and Working With Young People With Autism. I have worked collaboratively in partnerships with The Great North Children's Hospital, North East Autism Society, Children North East, North Tyneside Family Intervention, Durham, Gateshead and Newcastle Fostering and Adoption Services, Family Intervention Services and Music Services (HUBS) within Primary Education, SEND and PRU across the North East. I was a vocalist and percussion player with Bridie Jackson and The Arbour, a four-piece contemporary folk/acoustic band based in Newcastle. Gaining widespread acclaim, we received radio play on BBC 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 Music, played live sessions for Dermot O’Leary and Radio 4′s Loose Ends, and won a Journal Culture Award for their Arts Council-funded project, Music in Museums, and performed on multiple stages at the legendary Glastonbury Festival, having beaten over 8,000 contenders to win the 2013 Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition. I am a Festival Compere, having worked with Cambridge Folk Festival since 2015 and smaller festivals, including Maddy Prior's Stepping Stones Festival in Cumbria. I am now a Director of Sound Sense and work as a Freelance Musician working with babies, the elderly and all ages in between. We’re one of the biggest community platform in the South of Scotland, and we work with our partners to use culture as means to improve the lives of our community who are experiencing high levels of social and rural isolation. As a unique social co-operative, we have over 170 voluntary members who contribute to our social model through volunteering, sponsorship or advocacy. Anyone can join our membership organisation. We have just taken over the Loreburn Hall in the centre of Dumfries which is a temporary cultural space, including an 80 seat cinema, 50 seat cabaret lounge, 50 seat black box theatre and a main hall with a capacity of 1200 Our work takes place in schools, residential homes, cafes, car parks, swimming pools and in all sorts of locations throughout our region. We believe that there are barriers that prevent members of our community taking part in culture and we do everything we can to deliver socially driven projects that help to improve the cultural health of our region through our seasons of projects which aim to increase resilience by connecting our community through our cultural programmes and services. Our signature projects include a diverse range of community arts based programmes and iconic place-making projects including our annual winter festival, Carlisle Fringe, Dumfries Carnival, Le Haggis, High Tea, Queer Haggis, Dumfries Youth Theatre, Dumfries Community Choir and Producers of the Future. Every year we deliver more than 300 shows across our festival programmes, as well as weekly community arts sessions to over 100 participants, creative industry training for emerging artists and the sector across Dumfries & Galloway, and traineeships in producing across our major projects. Our cultural skills development programme is one of the largest of its kind in the UK. At the centre of our work is the belief that we can use culture to connect people, we advocate that culture is good for our wellbeing and health, and that art is a form of human expression and creativity. Unusually, I started off life in a mix of theatre practice, retail operations and law with expertise in learning and development and employee engagement. With James, I co-authored the highly-regarded Customer Experience in Law report in 2012 endorsed by the UK College of Law. I also led the market-leading Australian CXINLAW research in 2015 and 2018 that examines the Client Experience Advantage for law firms, supported by the Australasian Legal Practice Management Association (ALPMA). In 2018, I was invited to become a faculty member of the Centre for Legal Innovation at the College of Law. I have presented on Client Experience to Australia and New Zealand law societies, Law Institute of Victoria (LIV), and ALPMA. I am the former Vice President of the Continuing Legal Education Association Australasia (CLEAA) and faculty member of Queensland Law Society teaching client care and Client Experience on the Practice Management Course (PMC). My work with CXPeople allows me to advise, design and virtually deliver training and consultancy services. Unless I’m out walking on the beach in Melbourne, as that takes priority!

David Dancey-Wood is one of the leading wildlife pencil artists in the United Kingdom. Alongside an obsession to develop his artistic ability from an early age , David has always had a passionate association with the natural world. Through his style of art, he tries to accurately record every anatomical detail as closely as possible, blending both science with art. His hope is that his artwork will give future generations an accurate artistic record of today’s fast disappearing wildlife. He has been described as one of the finest primate artists in the world and his work has received a host of accolades from international experts in that field. For many years David has worked very closely with Alison and the late Jim Cronin at Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre in Dorset as their artist. His pictures of chimpanzees and orang-utans come alive, with stunning detail of every hair and facial feature. In 2008 David was invited along with David Attenborough as a guest of honour for the re-launch of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Foundation at the Bafta theatre in London.
