Author of historical fiction and non fiction. I mainly write historical fiction, inspired by what I call ‘the footnotes of history’: forgotten stories or part-legends about interesting people. My first two series are set in very different eras: 18th century China, following the lives of concubines in the Forbidden City, and 11th century North Africa, following the rise of a Muslim Empire across Morocco and Spain. My first novel, The Fragrant Concubine, was Editor’s Choice at the Historical Novel Society and The Cold Palace won the 2019 Novel London award. If you’d like to try my writing, pick up a free novella, The Cup. I’m currently writing a series set in 1st century AD Rome, following the backstage team of the Colosseum. The first book, From the Ashes, was Editor’s Choice at the Historical Novel Society. I also get curious about other subjects and have written non-fiction books including 100 Things to do while Breastfeeding and The Happy Commuter, featured on BBC Radio and in The Evening Standard. I wrote a 20min sci-fi radio play which was chosen for the 2019 Page to Podcast competition and produced by the Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts. You can listen to Fixed here.

Two Queens is an artist-run gallery and studios situated in Leicester’s Cultural Quarter. With the ambition of providing a centre for experimental modes of arts production, exhibition and exchange, Two Queens is dedicated to establishing an agenda for new activity in the city and across the region. We want to invest our energies into collaborations with new institutions and individuals from outside of Leicester whilst also assisting in the development of artists working within the city. Two Queens was established in 2011 by recent graduates from De Montfort and Loughborough Universities, and has been programming regular exhibitions and events since March 2012. Two Queens is a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee. Donations towards the costs of running our public programmes are always welcomed. Replico was founded in 1997 as a production facility to support Higher Still Drama, before branching out into wider lifelong learning contexts. Originally established for small-scale school tours, the company has since established a capacity for digital media production and commercial theatre. Our principal activity remains strategic support for schools, colleges and local authorities, through a wide range of workshops for pupils and students of all ages, training for staff, lecture demonstrations and bespoke resource materials. In recent years the company has developed an international profile, having taken part in study visits, conferences and research projects in Reggio Emilia, Milan and Venice and offering specialist support in classical theatre for summer schools in Ferrara. In Scotland, our work is currently focused on developing creativity across learning, primarily in the context of the Scottish Attainment Challenge with a strong emphasis on literacy. Artistic Director and Replico founder Joe Gallagher has over thirty years experience in theatre, TV and radio as an actor, director, producer and technician, but also works part time as a cultural coordinator for East Ayrshire Council, working closely with schools and senior education management staff, allowing a unique insight to arts education in Scotland.

Since 2000, NALA has been using television, radio, print, telephones and the internet to provide educational opportunities to people who want to improve their literacy. We operate a Tutoring Service, providing tutor support over the phone and internet. We also manage an eLearning website www.learnwithnala.ie where people can have their skills assessed across a number of areas and then be prescribed an individual learning plan to improve these areas. We raise awareness of literacy services We raise awareness of literacy services through national awareness campaigns. We have produced eleven TV series in association with RTE and national TV, Radio and Cinema advertising campaigns. NALA operate a Freephone support line that is staffed by experienced operators who can identify callers’ needs and advise them on free services nationwide. This includes tuition in 120 local adult education centres or NALA’s Tutoring Service where they tutor people over the phone. We advance adult literacy policy through research We work in partnership with government departments, organisations, tutors and learners to advance adult literacy policy. This work is supported by evidence-based research which examines international best practice, reviews Irish policy and produces recommendations to support people with unmet literacy needs. Our policy work aims to influence Government policy and lobby for appropriate actions and funds to improve literacy and numeracy levels in Ireland.

We are a mixed, non-auditioned choir from Burnley who meet weekly to sing in 4 part harmony – we don't do solos and you don't need to be able to read music to sing with us. All the songs are taught by ear; you just need to want to sing with other people! The choir, formed in 1998, has its roots in the Clarion tradition of singing as a part of radical campaigning – it is one of only 4 in the UK with the 'Clarion' title. (See Working Class Movement Library website) The origins of a Burnley Clarion Choir date back to the 1900s – here are our illustrious ancestors in 1911.
