Karate is a system of self defence originally developed and refined in Okinawa and Japan. OUR HERITAGE Bristol Karate Academy has had roots in the area for a long time. Three of its four core instructors were born in Bristol and all have a passion for the area and for making it a centre of excellence for Traditional Shotokan Karate. The oldest dojo in the Academy opened its doors forty years ago in 1978, while the newest dojo opens its doors in September 2018. The one thing they have in common is the aim of bringing the highest standard of Traditional Japanese Karate to the people of Bristol. OUR MOTTO Bristol Karate Academy takes its motto, "Virtute et industria" — or by virtue and industry — from the city of Bristol, which dates back to at least 1569. The motto reflects the values of the club and fit hand in glove with the core values of traditional Karate-Do. The Japanese calligraphy (kanji) in our logo and in brushwork on the right-hand side of this page show this translated. The first two characters say Bitoku (virtue) and the next two translate as Benrei (industry). Because each character can carry multiple meanings, the characters for industry also represent diligent study, alertness, encouragement and application of oneself. Perfect for the Academy. Nearing the end of his undergraduate degree at Oxford University, our Director, William Humphreys, reflected on the life-changing opportunities that had been afforded to him, and the countless avenues now open ahead of him, as a result of his time at Oxford. Affected profoundly by the transformational effect this place and this education had had on his life, he started discussions with his brother and Co-Director George about how these same opportunities and experiences might be offered to students looking to make decisions about their own futures. George and William opened the first ORA summer school in 2005, made up of 35 students, a number of whom are still in touch with us and each other today! That summer was full of academic energy and progress, friendship, cultural expansion, and fun! It became clear that the opportunity to use summer holidays to learn in an entirely different way from school was both exciting and inspiring to students from all over the world. Energised by the opportunity to bring something new to the world of education, our most popular courses were born and aptly named ‘New Perspectives’ and ‘Broadening Horizons’. We build and retain close relationships with our students and their parents, listening carefully to their experiences and ambitions. These relationships have become an important driver of our growth and we are always thrilled to hear from alumni about the paths they have taken and the successes they have enjoyed. We are a leading London maternity hospital and care for more than 8,000 pregnant women and birthing people and their babies each year. We provide all aspects of obstetric and midwifery care, from before conception and before birth (antenatal) to birth and after delivery (postnatal). The majority of pregnant women and people will be cared for by our expert team of midwives who are experienced in supporting those with uncomplicated pregnancies and births. When your circumstances are more complex, our specialist obstetric doctors and allied health professionals will work alongside your midwife to give you the care and support your need to have a safe and satisfying birth. You will have your own ideas about how you would like your baby to be born – whether at home or in hospital – and we do our best to help you to achieve this. We have obstetric-led birthing rooms, midwife-led birth suites with birth pools, obstetric theatres for both planned and emergency caesareans, and a homebirth service. We are legally processing your personal data through your contract (the enrolment form) to attend an Adult Education Budget funded course. This part of the processing is necessary to provide you with the service you have requested. Educafe CIC is working with local authority Community Learning services acting in the public interest. As such, some processing will take place for these purposes. There is also a legal basis for the processing we undertake, as the Apprenticeships, Skills, Children and Learning Act 2009 requires the School to create and maintain a unique learner number (ULN). You are under no obligation to give the School permission to use your data for marketing and research purposes, it’s your choice. This is clearly marked on the enrolment form as an “opt-in”. If you don’t wish to be contacted, simply leave the relevant boxes blank. If you opt-in and subsequently decide you don’t wish to hear from the School in the future, just let us know by responding to the emails you receive – we’ll remove you from the distribution list. How long will your data be kept? You have a number of rights when it comes to the data we hold about you. I'm a mum of two, and a certified Relaxation & Sophrology Therapist based in Kings Heath and Stirchley in Birmingham, UK -consulting online and in-person, in French and English, for stress & anxiety management, pregnancy and birth preparation, children, sleep issues, mindset coaching and self-development, and life transitions and challenges. ‍ My Approach ‍ Sophro by Nature was born from my passion for People and Nature, and my desire to promote a healthier and deeper connection between our body and mind, and the world around us. Sophro comes from the Greek "Sos" and "Phren" meaning awareness/balance of the Body-mind connection, and "by Nature" refers to the fact that this connection/awareness is natural - but with life's busyness we tend to forget about it. It also refers to my passion for bringing therapy to the outdoors. ‍ I use relaxation therapy along a holistic therapeutic method - called sophrology - that combines classic relaxation techniques with mindset coaching, and which blends the best of Western science (hypnotherapy, positive & behavioural psychology, relaxation techniques, guided imagery, counselling skills) and Eastern traditions (mindfulness, yoga, breathing, visualisation, meditation) to balance the body-mind connection and provide a more serene approach to life challenges. (see FAQ for more info on Sophrology). ‍ All the techniques I use are advocated for by the NHS on their website and have been shown to be effective by research studies - my own background is grounded in science with a (honour) MSc in Environmental Studies and Ecotourism from Edinburgh Napier University. I've also spent over 400 hours in training and supervised therapy for two years in a state-accredited school in France to become a Relaxation and Sophrology Therapist :) ‍ About Me After I became a mum for the first time in the US, I was looking for a new way of being a working mother. When we moved to Luxembourg, I set up a project coming from my heart: working with children and families. This led me to create my own Professional Training Center in Language Development and Nature Education in Luxembourg. Thanks to this experience, I've worked with people of all ages, walks of life, cultures and nationalities - parents and babies, young children with special needs, mums and dads to be, grandparents, language therapists, and early-years educators. ‍ Working with parents and children also naturally led me to understand the importance of a healthy lifestyle, general well-being, and stress management. This is what started my life-long mission, and prompted me to train as a Relaxation and Sophrology Therapist: to provide support and ways to alleviate stress-related issues that I witnessed - much too often - in people's daily lives. My own experience living and working in various countries with different cultures expanded my cultural and diversity sensitivity - this is why I chose to specialise in children, families, and especially expatriates/immigrants and Third Culture Kids. What I love most about my work is the flexible and therapeutic nature of the methods I use; one day I can prepare a pregnant mum for birth and dealing with pain and fear, the day after I can help a child deal with stress and anxiety, the next day I can help a client improve sleep issues, and the following day I can provide emotional and pain relief to someone going through chemotherapy... It is never boring and always feels so rewarding! As a holistic practitioner, I enjoy taking into account all aspect of your life(style), so that I can provide tools and techniques to empower but also lead to another way of being yourself - a happier and healthier self :) I've always be a Nature lover (I was a Climbing Instructor and trained in Primitive Skills and Nature Education too), and I combine this important value of mine with relaxation and sophrology when I design sessions for my clients, as I firmly believe that the natural world - our world - is a great source of appeasement. TutorStream cannot guarantee that the Website will always be available, or that it will always work, but it will try to have it up and running properly at all times. Every now and again, the Website might need to be taken offline for maintenance purposes. To communicate any planned maintenance of the Website or Platform downtime. To use reasonable endeavours (which means to try hard!) to keep the Website free from viruses and worms. To use reasonable endeavours to check the identity of all Tutors and the background checks of Tutors who have Background Checked Status.
