Criminology Course

By Elearncollege

DESCRIPTION Criminology is the scientific study of crime. It includes broad elements like nature, causes, consequences, responses by law enforcement and the methods of prevention. It is applicable to both individuals and groups. It is an interdisciplinary field that includes concepts and perspectives from sociology, psychology and statistics. Even after more than two-and-half centuries since its inception, criminological theories haven't lost its relevance even today. There were originally three major criminological schools: Classical, Positive and Chicago. These schools of thought were supplanted by various modern perspectives like cultural criminology, critical criminology, postmodern criminology, feminist criminology, etc. However, definitions of crime vary from one society to another but all societies strive to protect people from harm and punish serious criminal behavior. This course covers the important aspects of criminology like what constitutes a crime, how it is measured and what are the different types of criminal activities. What you will learn 1: Defining and Measuring Crime 2: Understanding Crime 3: How crime is measured 4: Victims 5: Getting violent - Crimes of Force 6: Property Crime 7: White Collar Crimes 8: Organized Crime and Gangs 9: The Narcotic Trade 10: Terrorism COURSE OUTCOMES After completing the course, you will receive a diploma certificate and an academic transcript from Elearn college. DESCRIPTION Comparative Criminology Diploma Navigating the world of crime and criminal behaviour often necessitates a broader perspective that looks beyond a single jurisdiction. The Comparative Criminology Diploma provides learners with a comprehensive overview of criminology from a global standpoint. This online course offers the flexibility and convenience that learners need, allowing them to gain in-depth knowledge without the constraints of a physical classroom setting. The course begins with an introduction to Comparative Criminology, setting the stage for a journey that encompasses the complexities of criminal behaviour and justice systems from different corners of the world. It offers a nuanced understanding, shedding light on the ways in which societies perceive, control, and penalise criminal behaviour. One of the essential aspects covered in this course is the historical development of criminology. By exploring the origins and evolution of criminological thought, learners can better understand contemporary practices and trends. The journey through history enables them to trace back the roots of various criminal behaviours, helping pinpoint the societal changes that influenced them. A significant part of the Comparative Criminology Diploma focuses on the criminal justice system from a global perspective. Learners gain an understanding of the various ways justice systems operate, the principles guiding them, and the challenges they face in different cultures and societies. This global overview proves instrumental for those aiming to work in international criminal justice roles or wanting a more expansive knowledge of global criminology. With crime rates and statistics forming the backbone of criminological studies, the course dedicates ample time to this aspect. It provides learners with the tools to interpret and analyse crime data, recognise patterns, and understand the implications of these patterns in different socio-cultural contexts. Violent crimes across cultures and property crimes receive a comparative analysis. Such a focused study allows learners to discern the reasons behind the prevalence of certain crimes in particular regions and the societal factors influencing them. Similarly, the course extensively covers drug-related crimes and policies, presenting an overview of global drug crimes and the strategies employed by different nations to combat them. An in-depth exploration of gender and its relationship with crime is also part of the curriculum. The Comparative Criminology Diploma highlights the differences in criminal behaviours exhibited by different genders, the societal perceptions surrounding them, and the justice system's response. Punishment and rehabilitation are two cornerstones of any justice system. This course evaluates the various ways societies punish offenders and the effectiveness of rehabilitation methods. By comparing and contrasting these across cultures, learners gain a comprehensive understanding of global penal systems. Lastly, the course concludes with a discussion on the future directions in comparative criminology. Leicester

The University was founded as Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland University College in 1921. The site for the University was donated by a local businessman, Thomas Fielding Johnson, in order to create a living memorial for all local people who made sacrifices during the First World War. This is reflected in the University's motto Ut vitam habeant – 'so that they may have life'. Students were first admitted to the college in 1921, sitting examinations for external degrees awarded of the University of London. In 1927 the institution became University College, Leicester; 30 years later the college was granted its Royal Charter. This gave it the status of a University with the right to award its own degrees. The University won the first ever series of University Challenge, in 1963. Discover some of our finest research achievements, from genetic fingerprints to King Richard III. Find out about the University's origins as a living memorial to the fallen of World War One. Campus Our very compact campus contains a wide range of twentieth century architecture, though the oldest building dates from 1837. The main campus is a mile south of the city centre, adjacent to Victoria Park and Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth I College. The central building, now known as the Fielding Johnson Building, houses the University's administration offices and Leicester Law School. This was formerly the Leicestershire and Rutland Lunatic Asylum. Adjacent to the Fielding Johnson Building are the Astley Clarke Building and the Danielle Brown Sports Centre. The skyline of Leicester University is punctuated by three distinctive, towering buildings from the 1960s: the Engineering Building, the Attenborough Tower and the Charles Wilson Building. The University's Engineering Building was the first major building by important British architect Sir James Stirling. It comprises workshops and laboratories at ground level, and a tower containing offices and lecture theatres. It was completed in 1963 and is notable for the way in which its external form reflects its internal functions. The 18-storey Attenborough Tower, housing several departments within the College of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities, has one of the very few remaining paternosters in the UK. The Ken Edwards Building, built in 1995, lies adjacent to the Fielding Johnson Building. Built in 1957, the Percy Gee Building is home to Leicester University's Students' Union. The David Wilson Library was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in December 2008, following an extensive refurbishment.
