The > confidence Pamela has given me will impact positively on my everyday practice, > I am truly inspired... > > PSYCHOTHERAPIST WHY TAKE THIS COURSE Children’s natural affinity with stories gives us an incredibly powerful, non-directive way to help emotionally distressed and abused young people, who can sometimes be hard to reach in any other way.  On this practical live training event you will learn how to tap into your own metaphorical brain to create therapeutic stories and metaphors ‘in the moment’ that are appropriate to each individual’s circumstances and experiences. Throughout the day Pamela – a master storyteller and highly experienced psychotherapist – draws on her own case histories, metaphor and story examples as she guides you through the steps involved in ‘thinking on your feet’ and creating a story yourself in the moment.  By the end of the day you will have lots of new, innovative ways to engage with and help distressed children deal with the experiences they have had – whilst also offering them hope, understanding, and new ways of thinking and feeling about life and themselves. Indeed, you may well be surprised at how quickly positive psychological changes occur as a result of the stories you will create and tell ‘in the moment’. Stories also play a crucial role in child development – through the ways the different characters think, act and overcome difficulties, children gain important templates for understanding the world and dealing with the challenges and situations they will meet in life – both now and in the future. They are a wonderful way to help build resilience. Storytelling and the careful use of therapeutic metaphor are crucial elements of successful counselling and psychotherapy – they help bypass assumptions and rigid thinking to offer a new, broader way of looking at things, awaken innate resources and offer crucial hope – just what struggling children need… > Wonderful, interactive online course. Understanding Babies’ Communication & Sleep (0 to 12 Months)

By Millpond Childrens Sleep Clinic

Our one-day workshop aims to provide healthcare professionals with evidence-based knowledge to develop their theoretical and practical understanding of the importance of early communication between parents and infants. We also consider how to support parents’ bond with their babies when suffering with poor mental health. We explore how early experiences impact the child/parent relationship and how this influences brain development and the trajectory of infant mental health. We examine different types of crying and recognise the emotional impact this has on both the baby and carer and how participants can support parents in reading their baby’s behaviour and regulating their states. The workshop will also look at babies’ rapidly evolving sleep patterns and sleep cues and how staff can offer anticipatory advice to parents to encourage early good sleep habits. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WORKSHOP AIMS * To provide community staff with up-to-date evidence-based knowledge to develop an understanding of infant mental health, brain development and the importance of how early experiences impact on child/adult relationships. * For professionals to develop an understanding of what babies are trying to say; to enable them to support parents in gaining confidence with tuning into and regulating their babies. * To understand the evolving sleep patterns of babies up to a year old and how parents can support their baby to encourage early good sleep habits. LEARNING OUTCOMES * By the end of this workshop participants will be able to: * Understand how early relationships can influence the development of the infants’ brain and mental health. * Explore crying babies and its impact on the baby and their carer. * Understand the subtle cues of babies from birth onwards. * Offer parents anticipatory advice to encourage early good sleep habits. * Enable parents to respond to their baby’s cues in a sensitive, timely manner so the baby feels safe secure and loved; this is particularly important for parents who are struggling to bond with their baby, possibly as a result of postnatal depression or having experienced adverse childhood experiences themselves.

ADHD – IMPROVING UNDERSTANDING AND INCLUSION

By Inclusive Solutions

Never before have so many children been labelled with ADHD – not just labelled but also given powerful amphetamines as a ‘treatment’. ADHD is described as impacting on school-aged children and resulting in restlessness, impulsive actions, and lack of focus impairing their ability to learn properly. COURSE CATEGORY Behaviour and Relationships Meeting emotional needs Autism and Communication DESCRIPTION Never before have so many children been labelled with ADHD – not just labelled but also given powerful amphetamines as a ‘treatment’. ADHD is described as impacting on school-aged children and resulting in restlessness, impulsive actions, and lack of focus impairing their ability to learn properly. It is the most commonly studied and diagnosed psychiatric disorder in children, affecting about 3 to 5 percent of children globally and diagnosed in about 2 to 16 percent of school-aged children. 30 to 50 percent of those individuals diagnosed in childhood continue to have symptoms into adulthood. Adolescents and adults with ADHD tend to develop coping mechanisms to compensate for some or all of their impairments. ADHD is diagnosed two to four times more frequently in boys than in girls. ADHD management usually involves some combination of medications, Applied behaviour analysis (ABA, the new term for Behaviour modification), lifestyle changes, and counselling. ADHD and its diagnosis and treatment have been considered controversial since the 1970s. The controversies have involved clinicians, teachers, policy-makers, parents and the media. Topics include ADHD’s causes, and the use of stimulant medications in its treatment. So join us on a reflective, creative day where we look deeper at this whole area – seeing what we can learn from other areas that may help us in our understanding and inclusion of children and young people with this label LEARNING OBJECTIVES 1. Increased confidence and understanding regarding ADHD labelled pupils and their inclusion in mainstream schools 2. Access to a wider range of practical strategies to impact on movement and behaviour issues 3. New skills and processes to strengthen the inclusion of young people with ADHD labels in all settings 4. Opportunity to reflect and understand more deeply what might be happening in situations for someone labelled ADHD WHO IS IT FOR ? Carers Count is a not for profit organisation that supports unpaid carers within Kirklees. We are managed by and operate under the Cloverleaf Advocacy umbrella and work closely with a wide range of professional health and care services, Kirklees Council, charities and community groups to provide support for unpaid carers. Carers Count works with carers who are aged 18 and over and give their time to someone with a physical disability, long-term illness, an older person, a child with additional needs, a learning disability and/or a mental health issue (including dementia). We are also able to provide assistance to someone even after they cease caring for whatever reason. Our dedicated team is on hand to offer advice, information, advocacy, support groups and activities for unpaid carers across Kirklees. We are experts in our fields and cover everything related to an unpaid carers role from benefits advice, raising awareness for carers, meditation sessions and wellbeing support, to understanding your rights as a carer. Everyone in the Carers Count team is hugely committed to supporting carers in whichever ways we can and it's our mission to raise awareness of carer issues - working in partnership with carers and on their behalf when they feel their voice is not being heard. Thank you for the support I have taken from my involvement with Carers Count and the courses I have taken with you over the years. What you do is so needed by carers and I never felt totally alone in all these years.

Huddersfield

I am delighted to welcome you to Huddersfield New College. Whilst I was appointed as Principal in early 2022, I have been a proud member of the HNC community for a number of years. I am honoured to have been part of the College's journey so far and I am excited about our future. HNC is a high achieving, forward thinking institution with big ambitions, both for the students in our care and our role within the communities that we serve. This national reputation for excellence is reflected in our outstanding Ofsted rating and through the numerous high profile awards that we have received. You can read more about this here. Most importantly, it is reflected in the successes of our students who progress from HNC to a wide range of destinations - from Oxbridge and Russell Group universities to degree level apprenticeships and the world of work. Whatever our students want to do after College, we ensure that they can achieve it. Places at HNC are in high demand and we are an oversubscribed College. We are currently extending our Campus so that even more young people from the local community can benefit from the experience on offer from September 2022 onwards. We are here to help each and every student be the best version of themselves. We are authentic, passionate, respectful, self-disciplined, innovative and empathetic; these are our values and they underpin everything that we do both inside and outside of the classroom. Our young people leave us ready and excited to embrace their next steps with confidence - they have the qualifications, life skills and knowledge to achieve their ambitions. HNC has a long history of success and there are so many inspiring stories that we have helped our students to write. As Principal, I very much look forward to building on these successes and taking the College into a new phase of development to offer our students an exceptional experience. Whether you are exploring this website as a prospective student or parent/carer, member of the local community or a prospective employee, I look forward to welcoming you to HNC soon.
