Knowledge Exchange (KE) is a collaborative, creative endeavour that translates knowledge and research into impact in society and the economy (a definition agreed by global KE/TT alliance, ATTP). PraxisAuril is the UK’s professional association for KE practitioners working in universities, private and public sector research organisations to manage IP commercialisation, collaboration and other types of engagement between researchers and external organisations to deliver social and economic impact through innovation and enhanced productivity and skills. PraxisAuril is a founding member of the Alliance of Technology Transfer Professionals (ATTP), driving global professional standards and recognition through RTTP accreditation. Since 2002 the Cambridge-based executive team, led by Maxine Ficarra, has worked with hundreds of expert practitioner volunteers to extend the organisation’s professional development, membership and advocacy activities nationally and internationally. PraxisAuril is a company limited by guarantee. It generates income from membership fees, professional development training courses, conferences and other services and events. Any profits are reinvested strategically into projects and initiatives to develop, promote and connect the Knowledge Exchange community.

I formed Keepabeat in 2007. My name is Sam Mackay and I’m a fully qualified Lifeguard and First Aid Trainer. I had a passion for teaching first aid and worked for several training companies on a freelance basis. I trained delegates from a wide range of backgrounds, including blue chip companies like House of Fraser, Sainsbury’s and Starbucks, but also local Childminders and Nannies. I developed as a trainer and realised that this was so much more than just a “job”. After having my daughter Ruby in 2012 my focus changed a little, however, it was very fortunate that I had learnt all those basic life saving skills, as Ruby certainly tested my knowledge! Realising that many Parents wouldn’t know what to do, or how to deal with a First Aid emergency, made me determined to pass on that knowledge. So, a new passion was born and teaching Parents, Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, Babysitters, Childminders and Nannies basic first aid was my new mission. Working from a laptop in the front room and a car loaded with manikins, I worked hard to spread the KeepaBeat message, delivering Parent sessions and First Aid at work courses all over the UK. It soon became clear that I couldn’t do it alone! I meet many subtle revolutionaries. One thing most have in common is that they struggle to describe what it is they do. They are doing something unique and it does not have a name yet. They may work with individuals, families or organisations. They may call themselves a consultant, founder, coach, designer, therapist, trainer, teacher, facilitator, researcher or leader. Often, they are all of these things and more. What they have in common is they are making lives better in new and unexpected ways. This is not a straightforward path. Few workplaces welcome any of the three qualities. I have yet to find one that wants all three. Working on the big picture is seen as a distraction from the urgent business of the day. It is easy to pick up the message that the approach - perhaps your greatest strength - has no value. That leads to unfulfilling work and the exhaustion of trying to be someone you are not. When you try to use these qualities, you will meet another challenge. Most of the existing advice will not work for you effectively. It is either outdated or just plain wrong. Some of it will even make things worse. This leads to anxiety and frustration. Perhaps even the sense of being a failure when things just don’t work out as intended time after time. I provide space as you reclaim the qualities that make you unique. I offer guidance as we explore ways to turn that uniqueness into a valuable enterprise. In doing so, we create a situation where it is no longer necessary to struggle for success. Where you do not have to trade energy for money.

My passion for travel started when I was 17, leaving home and going to the Irish traditional city of Galway on the beautiful west coast of Ireland to live and work. This journey has continued and never wavers to the current day. I oversee Erasmus work-based internships from all over Europe. I also write large funding applications to give local people the opportunity to experience different cultures, learn new working ethics and enhance their employability skills. Ethos I believe that travel and experiential learning are paramount to one’s development. This includes tourism that focuses on history, culture, heritage, outdoor and therapeutic activities.
