Working bone is a skill that was fundamental in our journey towards making evermore effective and reliable tools. Not only that, but making bone tools allowed our hunter gatherer ancestors to share a deeper connection with, and understanding of, the animals that they were so dependent upon. Bone is a versatile material that can be used to make all manner of tools and craft items ranging from simple designs to very intricate.  The use of bone allowed us to create more effective clothing utilising tools such as needles and pins. In a recent find, 500,000 year old bone tools were found in Britain, highlighting just how far back in time they stretch. During this one day course you will learn techniques on how to work bone using other natural materials such as flint and abrasive stones, as well as selecting specific bones to create different tools. The day will start by discussing some of the points above and looking at a selection of bone tools such as: Needles, Awls, Harpoons, Spear tips and Arrow heads. After that it will be time for you to warm up those fingers and start shaping some bone! About us and the venue: Jack Raven Bushcraft was founded in 2011 and we've been delivering bushcraft, craft and foraging courses since then from our 30 acre private ancient woodland on the Kent Downs in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Courses in the summer are held outdoors in our woodland camp complete with covered work areas, an outdoor kitchen and a composting loo. Courses in the winter are held in our workshop in a converted barn. What's included in the price? We include all tools, equipment and materials. The kettle is always on for tea and coffee. DeWolf Bushcraft has been created to provide a woodland retreat for Emergency Services workers and NHS staff dealing with the moral injuries and strains of work and home life. Tucked away in the Lake District, it is a sanctuary for those looking to use woodland, mountains and nature as a place to connect, adjust and heal. Originally a Paramedic in the London Ambulance Service, I eventually relocated to the Lake District after having to deal with my own moral injuries and burn-out. Reconnecting with nature and the mountains has enabled me to heal and build strength again. As such, I wish to share these opportunities with others and offer an invitation and a welcome to all who could benefit from time in the outdoors. To add to this, I have spent over fifteen years honing my Bushcraft and primitive skills. Nowadays, I work as a Paramedic Practitioner in Primary as well as a Bank paramedic for the Northwest Ambulance Service. I am a member of Kendal Mountain Rescue Team and when I have the opportunity I work as a medic supporting a wide variety of events.

Back in 2012, when husband and wife team Steven and Kirsty Le Say hosted a Spoon Carving Workshop in a friends garden on the request of a few interested neighbours. In the years since, we’ve opened up our own seaside workshop just outside of Brighton, where we host a number of courses, teaching primitive skills and bushcraft. Steve teaches overseas as well, with Living by Nature and we are regularly exhibiting crafts or teaching at various events across Europe. We’re still in Brighton currently, but will soon be moving to South Wales – into the Brecon Beacons – and our courses and workshops will be hosted from there from Feb 2023. Our new space in Wales includes workshop space, 8 acres of land, a small woodland and a stream. It’s all nestled within the Brecon Beacons National Park in stunning scenery. A hiking footpath onto the Beacons themselves, runs directly parallel to our land. We teach bushcraft and ancestral skills for all ages and levels of experience We hand craft items inspired by ancestral craft, often using primitive tools and techniques. We also create bespoke pieces on request We’re available to exhibit and teach at events. We also curate fellow craftspeople for larger events under ‘The Craft Collective’ We write regularly for The Bushcraft Journal.

Founded in 2011, Jack Raven Bushcraft courses take place in beautiful Westwell, Kent, UK, just 50 miles from the centre of London with easy access by both rail and road. We have access to around 60 or so acres of stunning ancient broadleaf woodland in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  Our courses in bushcraft, ancestral skills and wilderness living are perfect for anyone who wants to learn new outdoor skills, foraging, herbal remedies, traditional woodland crafts, corporate team building activities or simply having fun with nature. You don’t need any previous outdoor experience to take part in one of our bushcraft courses, or indeed any of our other courses, and the training sessions are entirely hands on so that you leave Jack Raven Bushcraft with simple, practical and repeatable skills.  Not only will you learn valuable bushcraft, survival and outdoor skills, but we’re certain that you’ll have a lot of fun along the way!  Our ancestral skills and bushcraft courses take place in a private woodland with no public access at an expedition style camp on the North Downs, complete with a yurt and wood burning stove, a parachute, a kitchen area, work benches and a composting toilet.  We have areas where you can pitch a hammock, tarp or small tent, cleared of standing and hanging dead wood, or you can camp on a nearby working farm campsite.  It’s the perfect environment for training in wilderness survival skills and taking part in our unbeatable bushcraft courses. Our bushcraft experience courses in Kent offer a wide range of organised outdoor tasks and team building activities covering wilderness living skills, woodlore, camp craft, tracking, earth skills, carving, and wild food and foraging courses as well as a wide range of traditional craft courses.   Our bushcraft and wilderness survival courses vary in duration, some take a day and are more specialised or you can join us for a bushcraft weekend.  For those who would like a truly immersive experience, we offer 5 day bushcraft courses – here you can learn all of the principles and skills needed to get by in the wild.   We place a strong emphasis on natural history, woodland management and conservation throughout all of our teachings as we believe that this knowledge should inform everything we do in bushcraft, both in the UK and abroad.
