St Joseph's is an English Medium, Catholic Voluntary Aided School for girls and boys aged 11-18 years in the Archiocese of Cardiff. It was established to provide secondary education for the Catholic population of Newport, Caldicot and Chepstow. Since then it has flourished with over 1400 students on roll, including 300 students in the Sixth Form. The school is sited in a new building completed in September 2004, that incorporates many exciting features including interactive technology being available in all classrooms, purpose-built suites for Science, Technology, Computer Science, Drama, Art and Music as well as a well resourced library, Sixth Form study area and a Sixth Form social area. Our school has a sustained record of excellent performances in examinations. This outstanding achievement has been recognised by Welsh Government and Estyn in our last Inspection (2018).

The St Bernadette Centre has recently undergone significant refurbishment and investment. Students have exclusive access to a group work room on their study day which doubles as a social space at break and lunch. Our curriculum offers the very best in both academic and vocational courses to match the needs of all our students. All Sixth Form students study Core RE across their two year career with us and complete the Extended Project, applying Catholic Social Teaching to a moral and ethical issue of their choice. Whilst we believe in allowing greater freedom to our students, we strive to have a true partnership between students, parents and tutors. Excellent pastoral care is provided by experienced tutors who advise, encourage and monitor student progress. The Duke of Edinburgh Award remains a strong feature of our school into the Sixth Form. The award gives students the chance to experience physical activities, volunteering, whilst developing life skills through expeditions; it is valued by universities and employees alike. During May half-term, Sixth Form students join the annual Diocesan pilgrimage to Lourdes to care for and assist the sick and disabled pilgrims. This is a very popular extra-curricular opportunity which really demonstrates the faith of our students in action. Throughout the week God’s love in action is seen through the selfless service of the young people and their generosity of spirit, sharing their talents and energy and time willingly with others.

With there being no school trips this year, we have organised a picnic for the whole school on Wednesday 16th of Jne 2021 with a ‘Shorts and Shades’ theme. The picnic will take place in the playground in class bubbles, as per Covid 19 guidelines. Children are encouraged to wear summer clothes on this day (weather permitting!) and are not required to wear school uniform. Pupils can also bring along a small towel or blanket to sit on. These will be for individual use only. Please also provide sun lotion (if required) and an extra bottle of water. An afternoon snack is being provided for your child along with an ice cream from the visiting ice-cream van. Our wonderful Parent Council is providing this. Children with dietary requirements will also be catered for.
