BABY PROJECT – WORKING WITH BABIES TO INCREASE EMPATHY

By Inclusive Solutions

This radical way of building empathy is inspired by the work of the ‘Roots of Empathy’ organisation in Canada. Roots of Empathy (ROE) is dedicated to building caring and peaceful societies through the development of empathy in children. It is a parenting education programme for elementary school students (between the ages of 3 to 14 years) based on monthly visits to the classroom by a parent and infant from the school neighbourhood. COURSE CATEGORY Behaviour and Relationships Autism and Communication Meeting emotional needs DESCRIPTION This radical way of building empathy is inspired by the work of the ‘Roots of Empathy’ organisation in Canada. As Mary Gordon founder of this way of working describes: > ‘By regular visits to the classroom of local mums and their children build an > empathic relationship with the baby. > > MARY GORDON Roots of Empathy (ROE) is dedicated to building caring and peaceful societies through the development of empathy in children. It is a parenting education program for elementary school students (between the ages of 3 to 14 years) based on monthly visits to the classroom by a parent and infant from the school neighbourhood. We teach teachers and educators to help children to observe, over the school year, how their baby forms an attachment to his or her parent. Children are encouraged to record how the infants develop. The children learn to spot their babies cues and unique temperament, while celebrating developmental milestones. Children are prepared for responsible and responsive parenting as they increase their knowledge about human development, learning, and infant safety. The baby project program brings about the development of empathy and emotional literacy: 1. As children learn to take the perspective of others they are less likely to hurt through bullying, exclusion, aggression, and violence. 2. Children learn how to challenge cruelty and injustice in their own classroom. 3. Messages of social inclusion and activities that are consensus-building contribute to a culture of caring that changes the tone of the classroom. 4. Involving fathers and men provides rich models of male nurturance TESTIMONIALS > ‘13% increase in empathy scores for our year 1s’ > ‘Years 2s empathy had increased by 35%’ > ‘Now that I am older I can be happy for other people’ (6 year old) > ‘Everyone is special – thats the truth – but when I was small I thought its > not fair when someone got a present and I didn’t’ (7 year old) > Dramatic improvements in children taking responsibility for actions and being > less defiant over the year of the project. LEARNING OBJECTIVES 1. Understanding of method and approach to building empathy with babies 2. Full understanding of background to this approach 3. Practical advice received as to how to set up baby project in classrooms across school WHO IS IT FOR ? * Teachers * School leaders * Project Coordinators * Social Care COURSE CONTENT * We will provide theoretical and evidence back ground to impact of this work. * We will describe existing UK school based work. * We will inspire staff in attendance to want to actively engage in this work * There may even be a baby to hold!!

Understanding Babies’ Communication & Sleep (0 to 12 Months)

By Millpond Childrens Sleep Clinic

Our one-day workshop aims to provide healthcare professionals with evidence-based knowledge to develop their theoretical and practical understanding of the importance of early communication between parents and infants. We also consider how to support parents’ bond with their babies when suffering with poor mental health. We explore how early experiences impact the child/parent relationship and how this influences brain development and the trajectory of infant mental health. We examine different types of crying and recognise the emotional impact this has on both the baby and carer and how participants can support parents in reading their baby’s behaviour and regulating their states. The workshop will also look at babies’ rapidly evolving sleep patterns and sleep cues and how staff can offer anticipatory advice to parents to encourage early good sleep habits. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WORKSHOP AIMS * To provide community staff with up-to-date evidence-based knowledge to develop an understanding of infant mental health, brain development and the importance of how early experiences impact on child/adult relationships. * For professionals to develop an understanding of what babies are trying to say; to enable them to support parents in gaining confidence with tuning into and regulating their babies. * To understand the evolving sleep patterns of babies up to a year old and how parents can support their baby to encourage early good sleep habits. LEARNING OUTCOMES * By the end of this workshop participants will be able to: * Understand how early relationships can influence the development of the infants’ brain and mental health. * Explore crying babies and its impact on the baby and their carer. * Understand the subtle cues of babies from birth onwards. * Offer parents anticipatory advice to encourage early good sleep habits. * Enable parents to respond to their baby’s cues in a sensitive, timely manner so the baby feels safe secure and loved; this is particularly important for parents who are struggling to bond with their baby, possibly as a result of postnatal depression or having experienced adverse childhood experiences themselves.

There are so many benefits to baby swimming lessons. Not only are our lessons brilliant for your child's development, they're also the perfect place to bond with your little one. Build their strength quicker Swimming strengthens your little one's heart and lungs, as well as their arm, leg and neck muscles. All this helps with their coordination and balance. It even aids a healthy appetite and improves their sleeping pattern. Enhance the bond between you Focused time in the water builds the bond between you and your baby, through skin-to-skin and eye contact. Swimming gives you that time to really connect, away from the demands of daily life. Teach them water safety There's nothing more important than your child's safety. Teaching them vital safety skills from the get-go prevents them from developing a fear of the water later and gives them the knowledge to keep themselves safe, wherever they are. Give them life confidence When your little one grasps a new skill, this sense of achievement gives them the confidence to try new things. So you'll soon see them flourish in and out of the water. Develop their social skills The pool is the ideal place for your little one to develop their social interaction as they play with other babies in the class. It's also a brilliant way for you to meet other like-minded parents too! Accelerate their learning ability All the movements that your little one learns in the water strengthen those brain connections. Research has shown that the time your baby spends swimming can put them months ahead with mathematical reasoning and reading.

I qualified as an infant massage teacher in 2016 and extended my qualifications to deliver yoga, sign and messy craft sessions. I juggle this with being a mother to my daughter. Before taking time off to have my daughter, I worked as a teacher and Head of Department in a Secondary school for almost 9 years within; Health and Social Care and Nutrition, at GCSE and A Level. During the first year of motherhood I was diagnosed with postnatal depression, which was a little bit of a shock. I had no idea about it, had never heard of it, didn't know how I would be treated and helped along and I had hundreds of questions. Eventually once I was able to find the correct support for me, things improved and I felt safe. My whole experience as a first time mum suffering postnatal depression led me down this path. I was keen to help and support other parents and carers, creating fun sessions for all who attend, to support all individually who attend, in all aspects of health. Making individuals feel safe, supported and cared for whilst enjoying fun and engaging sessions. The thing I love about baby massage and yoga, is the way it can help new parents build or enhance that bond with their new born and it is very instant - I can literally see it happen before my eyes, and this is a very special time. I love the way all of our sessions helps both parent or carer and the child. It is so wonderful to see all who attend go one a journey. Giving individuals the skills, the confidence and self-esteem to re-create sessions at home. I hold the Touch Learn International Qualification in Infant Massage, Baby Yoga and Baby Signing and a full and valid first aid certificate as well as a yearly updated DBS
