If you have always wanted to upcycle furniture, but felt like you would benefit from professional guidance then this is the course for you! You will learn how to prepare your furniture, using wood filler, expert sanding and paint techniques. You will learn to create stunningly modern geometric designs that are simple to achieve. By the end of the day you will leave with a gorgeous piece of upcycled furniture, feeling confident of your skills and full of ideas for future projects. The workshops have a relaxed and informal atmosphere where we can inspire each other and have lots of fun along the way. To ensure you get my full support throughout the day class sizes are limited to 6 people. All you need to bring is an unpainted, wooden piece of furniture. This should be easy to carry and no larger than a bedside table or wooden chair. Contact me with any questions or for recommendations of where to source your preloved piece. Send a picture of it if you would like advice. All abilities are welcome. It can get messy so please wear clothes that you don&rsquo;t mind getting paint on. All other materials will be providing, including your own information pack to take home, detailing all that is covered in the workshop. I am a qualified teacher and tutor and have been running workshops for several years. I started my own upcycling furniture business in 2015 and will share everything I&rsquo;ve learnt with you. There is a little cafe at Pear Mill where you are welcome to break and get some lunch during the day or feel free to bring a pack lunch.

If you have a voucher, then the date you select to redeem it on becomes your ticket and you cannot change from the date selected. 3D Transparent 'Stained Glass' Textile Panels
An Inspiring Practical Day Learning Textiles Skills with Textiles Artist Nikki Parmenter.
This is a totally practical day of workshops, learning how Nikki develops and creates her amazing artworks and how you can easily do this yourself or with your students or for yourself:)
We are thrilled to have textile artist Nikki Parmenter, join us to lead this workshop. Nikki brings her experience both as an artist and textiles teacher, developing this inspiring practical course, especially for both teachers who are new to the Art Textiles GCSE specification and those who wish to experiment more widely with a variety of new techniques, processes and contexts. It will provide links to specific visual art examples and will explore a range of interpretations, providing the opportunity to develop ideas through the use of media, materials, techniques and processes. 
The workshop will investigate the theme of ‘Flora and Fauna’, looking at both primary, secondary and contextual sources, and there will be a strong emphasis on colour and composition. Participants will create their own design using the source material provided. Pieces of A3 sized PVC plastic will be layered with synthetic fabrics, vinyls and cellophane then the designs will be free machine stitched on to this. Other embellishments will be added and a craft knife will be used to create a stencil effect in certain areas of the piece. The outcomes will be transparent and will mimic stained glass. Participants can choose to present their finished panels on a plain white background, against a window or as a cylinder / vase form. A string of LED lights will be used to illuminate the piece.
Participants will be able to transfer the skills and techniques covered to incorporate into their own developmental work.



This course is aimed at anyone interested in learning new techniques from the artist herself. It is particularly useful for textile and art teachers who are either new to teaching GCSE/A Level Art & Design or those who want to add to their resources by spending a whole day developing exciting new ideas and skills.

Practical and cheap resources, including using scraps and recycled materials, make this a fun and cheap option in class, that also covers sustainability.

What to expect on the day
You will be required to bring some source materials based on the theme of ‘Flora and Fauna’ with you.
Samples of Nikki's work will be explained, including her inspirations and working methods.
You will:
Experiment with a range of media and techniques which will broaden your knowledge and experience
Work to a theme using resources provided, including links to other visual art forms.
Explore a range of outcomes such a wall hanging or 3D piece
You will experiment with the following materials: fabric manipulation, free machine embroidery, heat techniques using fabric and plastics, entrapment, painting
Bring together a range of disparate materials in order to create a coherent piece
Experiment with the technique of “drawing” with a free machine embroidery foot
Try innovative ways of displaying the final outcome in a 2D or 3D format

What is special about the Nikki Parmenter textiles skills course?
This textiles techniques face-to-face course is an experience that delivers textiles skills, knowledge and understanding. It is a great learning environment which allows you to gain new skills and techniques, showing how these can be incorporated in lesson plans and delivered in a fun, inspiring and engaging way. You can ask questions direct to the course developer/leader, practice skills, create a sketchbook resource for the classroom and network with other teachers.



Course Developer and Leader: NIKKI PARMENTER

NIKKI PARMENTER has a BA First Class Honours Degree in Fine Art and an MA. She taught Art full time at Poynton High School, leaving in 2016 to pursue a career in textiles and education.
Based in Cheshire, Nikki's specialises in mixed media / textile artist specialising in large scale pieces incorporating free machine embroidery. She takes her inspiration from a variety of sources and is particularly interested in the way in which ancient societies created a series of visual symbols to represent the things which were important to them. She investigates myth and legend and draws parallels between societies, showing that although many people have different beliefs we are all united by visual iconography.
Nikki has done many workshops in schools and for Textiles Skills Cente, as well as Tea 'N Chat events looking at her work and demoing techniques.
She has exhibited widely both in group and solo shows both in the UK and abroad and has published articles in a number of publications. She also features in Kim Thittichai's book, 'Experimental Textiles' and has won prizes at The Ferens Open, The Potteries Open and the Grosvenor Open Exhibitions.

We offer a wide range of experience days to cater for groups up to twelve, of any ability and will provide tutors to fit your group size so whether you want to come on your own, with a loved one, or as a larger group such as a stag or hen do or team building with colleagues, then get in touch. Some of the items we aim to make are- Coat hooks, toasting folks, fire pokers, chestnut roasters, door knockers, curtain poles are just a few to mention and this is discussed at the time of booking. Whilst experiencing an exciting ancient tradition you will have loads of fun and most importantly a masterpiece made by yourself to proudly take home. We also offer further experience days for those that wish to broaden their skills further. PPE will be provided along with a warming lunch, snacks and drinks all included.

This half-day workshop will involve learning the traditional and modern skills of repairing ceramics. The session will start with using handmade paper, 24k gold leaf, and gold thread as we learn about this ancient traditional art. We will then work with a variety of pots which will be lovingly repaired using various lacquers and gold metal powder. Each piece restored will be unique and beautiful.
