I never tire of seeing the happiness that creating art brings and I believe that art is for everyone. SCOTTISH ARTISTS UNION DELIVERS A PROGRAMME OF WORKSHOPS, COURSES AND EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. Our Learning Programme creates opportunities for all visual artists, craft makers and art workers in Scotland to undertake training to improve their sector skills, address the barriers to freelance work, and participate fully as workers within the sector. All of our bespoke workshops and courses are free and created in direct response to our members’ needs; delivering specialist events on a variety of topics across Scotland and across disciplines. The union considers work-based learning as a crucial and critical intervention into the structure of freelance work; acknowledging its material conditions in order to organise around issues.

Helen Miles trained in the art of mosaic making with master crafts people in Greece who taught using traditional methods with a focus on Byzantine iconography. She later became interested in Roman mosaics and now makes contemporary pieces for interior and exterior spaces.

rachel davies mosaics

I am a mosaic artist based in Dunblane, Scotland. I use a range of materials in my work, particularly those which allow me to create texture and dimension. Slate is one of my favourite materials to use - it is strong yet delicate, and can contain a range of colours and surfaces. I also love using stone and smalti (a special type of glass for mosaics). I love inspiring others to get creative and I enjoy teaching regular workshops from my home studio. I believe that the process of making a mosaic can be therapeutic, whether it is the mindfulness and relaxation that comes from concentrating on placing individual pieces, or the social interactions that arise from working as part of a group. I am a professional member and the secretary of the British Association for Modern Mosaic (BAMM)
