In 1992, Shanghai decided to take Yangshan Deep-Water Port as the core of the construction of Shanghai International Shipping Center, and to build a great port in the eastern hemisphere. In 2002, the first of four phases of Yangshan Deep-Water Port project kicked off, with a land area of 1.11 million square meters and a dredging volume of 14.24 million cubic meters.
